Dear AVSC Families,

I am very excited to share the Aspen Supports Kids (formerly Base Camp) program guide for winter 2018-2019! We look forward to seeing many new faces in our Aspen Supports Kids programs and welcoming back even more returning skiers and snowboarders for another fun season. Our commitment to awarding scholarships in order to honor our mission of giving every child in the Roaring Fork Valley access to the mountains is stronger than ever; it is our hope that anyone who grows up in this incredible community is able to experience and enjoy the mountains that we call home!

As we move into the new season, I would like to welcome Meredith Elwell as the new Aspen Supports Kids Director! Meredith is already a familiar face to AVSC and to many of you; she was the AVSC Administration Manager prior to taking on this new role. Meredith has been involved with youth sports her whole life and is excited to take this next step with AVSC to make ASK a phenomenal experience for our valley’s youth!

As you look through the program guide and navigate registration, please do not hesitate to reach out to Meredith with any questions. She can be reached at [email protected] or 970.205.5161.

Here’s to a great winter full of challenge, growth, success, and FUN!

Best,

Mark Godomsky

AVSC’s recreational programs were started in 1989 by Bob Beattie, Brooke Peterson, and Charif Souki. The program originally started as 'Aspen Supports Kids’ and was later renamed 'Base Camp.’

We are returning to the program’s original name, ‘Aspen Supports Kids,’ in memory and honor of Bob Beattie, a dear friend to AVSC who passed away in the spring of 2018. While the program has grown from 25 kids to 1,600 since the time it was started nearly 30 years ago, the mission has remained the same: accessibility to skiing and snowboarding for local youth. Bob wanted every child to experience skiing regardless of his or her family's financial circumstance. He cared deeply about the success of AVSC and about each and every child in the program.

Bob is known globally in the ski community and beyond as a visionary and pioneer. He was on the founding team for the World Cup and the US Ski Team, he started the World Pro Skiing Tour, and he had an incredibly successful career commentating for various outlets, including ABC Sports and ESPN.

We will miss Bob tremendously, but his legacy and spirit will live on at AVSC through every child that has learned (or will learn) to ski as a result of his passion and dedication!

Bob on his favorite night of the year, Equipment Night at Four Mountain Sports and Gorsuch, with a young

athlete picking up her skis and boots.

Aspen Supports Kids registration is online. Visit www.teamavsc.org and follow these steps to get started:

1 Click “Register Online” or “Account Login” on the www.teamavsc.org homepage.

2 Enter your information. The system will recognize returning athletes or ask new participants to create a password. It is very important that returning families use the same information as last year; duplicate profiles cause confusion!

Contact Meredith (970.205.5161) if you need help recovering your existing account login and password.

3 Select “Participant Registration.” Select “2019” in the dropdown menu and then follow the prompts. You will be able to pay in full, or pay a $100 deposit and set up a payment plan (with a one-time $50 set-up fee per family).

NOTE: If you are applying for a scholarship, scholarship forms must be submitted in person to Meredith at the AVSC Clubhouse (300 AVSC Drive, Aspen CO) by October 19th. You can also email your completed forms to [email protected] or drop them off at a down valley registration night or during Meredith’s Carbondale office hours (info on next page). There is a scholarship form at the end of this program guide which you can tear out!

Need help? No problem! Contact Meredith, come visit us at the AVSC Clubhouse, attend a down valley registration night, or drop in during Meredith’s Carbondale office hours (more information on the next page).

AVSC believes that winter sports should be open to all children in the Roaring Fork Valley, and it is our mission to make that happen. We offer need-based scholarships for all AVSC programs except Aspenauts, Powder Pandas, Bighorns, SnoBandits, and Crossover. No pre-school or kindergarten-aged kids are eligible for scholarships.

Our 2018 scholarship deadline is October 19th, 2018. You will need to submit your completed registration and scholarship application, complete with a $100 deposit, by this date to be considered for a scholarship.

AVSC does not work alone. They say it takes a village to raise a child, but when it comes to giving 2,300 local children access to winter sports programming and providing over $1.25M in scholarships and subsidies, it truly takes a valley. AVSC is able to subsidize our programs thanks to the support of generous donors and sponsors who share our drive to make skiing and snowboarding affordable to all children in the Roaring Fork Valley. If you are interested in learning more about the many ways you can support AVSC, please contact AVSC’s Development Director, Miah Wheeler ([email protected] / 970.205.5102).

BILL KOCH YOUTH SKI LEAGUE (FORMERLY nordic base camp)Bill Koch, aka “Kochie,” is America’s first cross country skier Olympic medalist (1976). He emerged from the hills around Putney, Vermont to become a World Cup Champion. In addition to his international results, Bill was well known for fun and innovation. Often referred to as the father of skate skiing, Kochie helped popularize the technique in the early 80's leading to his bronze medal in the 1982 world championships. When he was not helping create a new technique or racing in Europe, Kochie was often seen skiing though the back woods and pastures, jumping and just playing on his skis!

When he retired from World Cup skiing, USSA honored Bill by forming the Bill Koch Ski League (BKL) to introduce America’s children to Nordic skiing and the joy of going fast on skis. AVSC ran this program in the 80's and early 90's. The name change from Base Camp back to Bill Koch Youth Ski League is an attempt to acknowledge Kochie and his innovative, fun-loving spirit.

Our BKL programs are fun, learn-to-ski programs geared towards children ages 5-11. The emphasis will be on fostering a love for the sport and enjoying winter in the Roaring Fork Valley. Children will develop basic motor skills invaluable to their future athletic involvement. Skills such as coordination, agility, and balance will be taught through a variety of games and activities. As children progress through the Bill Koch League programs, they will learn teamwork, sportsmanship, fair play, and other essential habits common among successful adolescents.
