Carpet heightadjustmentThe cleaning of carpet and rug s takesplace at the nozzle (A).

W hen it is necessary to raise and low erthe nozzle for various carpet pileheights, slide the nozzle control knob (B )to the desired setting.

Embedded Dirt FINDERfeatureW ith red and green lights (A), the ‘D irtFIN D ER’system alerts the user to areas ofcarpet that m ay need m ore cleaningattention. It is able to sense w hen larger

am ounts of dirt particles, esp eciallyem bed ded dirt, are rem oved.

w hen the cleaner is first turned on. A ftera few seconds, the red light w ill go offand the green light w ill com e on.Cleaning may then begin.

The green light will remain on throug h-out cleaning except w hen the detectorsenses that a larger amount of dirt isbeing picked up ; then the red light w illcom e on.

W hen the red light is on, you shouldtake additional cleaning strokes in thearea until it changes to green.

•The red light m ay seldom com e on dur-ing cleaning . This m eans that yourcleaner is p icking up prim arily fine sur-face d ust and lint w hich the system m aynot detect, or that the carpet is g enerallyclean. To increase the feature’s sensi-

tivity to dirt, set the sw itch (B) to the“Hi” position.

•At other tim es, the red light m ay stay onfor a considerable am ount of tim e. This

m eans that the carpet contains a highlevel of dirt w hich is being rem oved bythe cleaner. To decrease the feature’ssensitivity to dirt, set the sw itch to the

“Reg.” (R egular) position.

Stair cleaningA stair cleaning hand le has been de-signed for ease in using your cleaner onstairs. W ith handle in operating position,place fing ers under ed ge of stair clean-ing hand le and guide cleaner w ith otherhand on up per handle.

A s an alternative, you m ay use the hoseand pow ered hand tool or furniture noz-zle for stair cleaning. C lean from bottomto top.

When using cleaning tools, the agita-

tor will continue to rotate.CAUTION:To avoid personal injury orunnecessary wear to carpet, and toprevent the cleaner from falling,always place it at bottom of stairs.

How to attach toolcover The tool cover is designed w ith a“break-aw ay”feature w hich allow s it tosnap free if it is p ushed open too far.

To reattach, align hinges of cover w ithslots on sides of tool storage area.

Push cover dow n to secure in place.

Cleaning toolsTools allow for cleaning surfaces abovethe floor and for reaching hard to cleanareas.

The cleaner is ready for tool use w henhandle is in upright position.

CAUTION: Agitator continues torotate while cleaner handle is inupright position. Avoid tipping clean-er or setting it on furniture, fringedarea rugs or carpeted stairs duringtool use.

Removing hoseW hen using cleaning tools,cleanerhandle should be in the upright posi-tion. A lso,turn cleaner OFF beforedisconnecting and connecting hoseto hose tube (A).

To use hose, lift hose end as show n.

Select proper toolE. Dusting brush m ay be used forcarved furniture, table tops, books,lam ps, lighting fixtures, venetian blinds,baseboards, shutters, and registers.

3. Maintenance

Filter bagWhen to replaceC heck filter bag from tim e to tim e. It isrecom m ended that you change the filterbag w hen dirt reaches the dotted line. Ifm ore dirt than this accum ulates, yourcleaner w ill not operate effectively.

Note: All new carpet has loose fiberswhich can fill the bag quickly whilevacuuming.

If you are using the cleaner on newcarpet, be sure to change the filter

bag often.

CAUTION:Very fine materials, such asface powder, cornstarch, fireplaceashes or fireplace soot, may seal thefilter bag and may cause it to bursteven though it is only partially full ofdirt. When cleaner is used to removematerial of this nature, change filterbag often.

Check bag indicator The indicator (J) w ill begin to show red asthe filter bag fills w ith dirt.

T h e re are three conditions that w ill causethe ind icator to becom e com pletely re d :

1. If the bag is full; change the bag.

2. If very fine m aterials have been pickedup, clogging the bag pores; change thebag.

3. If there is a blockage at the front of thec le a n e r, in the hose, tools or at the bagopening; rem ove the blockage (see

“C learing blockages”section).

Cleaning final filter 

The final filter assists in the filtrationprocess to return clean air to the room .

To rem ove this filter w hen it becom esdirty, open the door on the side of thecleaner.

Lift out filter (B ) and hand w ash it incold w ater w ith m ild detergent.

Let filter air dry and rep osition it on theside of the cleaner. M ake sure the greencolored side of filter faces outw ard.C lose door.

Should you w ant to replace this filter,ask forHOOVER part No. 40110004.

Do not operate cleaner without eitherthe secondary or final filter in place.

Cleaning secondary filter

Disconnect cleaner from electricaloutlet.

The secondary filter (A), located behindthe grill in the bottom of bag com part-m ent, protects the m otor from dirt parti-cles.

If filter becom es dirty, pull off grill and liftout filter.

H and w ash filter in cold w ater w ith m ilddetergent, then air dry.

R eposition dry filter and grill.

Should you w ant to replace this filter, askforHOOVER part No. 38765019.

Replacing bag door 

Reposition bag door by placing tab s onbottom of door into opening (C ).

Press top of door to snap securely shut.

Pull other side of agitator (G ) into place.

Removing lens

Disconnect cleaner from electricaloutlet.

U sing a screw driver, rem ove the tw oscrew s as show n and lift off lens.

Installing bulb

Pull old bulb straight out of socket.Push new bulb straight into socket untillocked in place.

Excessive force is not required.

Belt replacementThe b elt on your H oover cleaner causesthe agitator to rotate and is im portant forthe effective operation of the cleaner.The belt is located under the bottomplate of the cleaner and should bechecked from tim e to tim e to b e sure itis in good condition.

When to replaceDisconnect cleaner from electricaloutlet.

To check belt, rem ove bottom plate asshow n in “H ow to replace”. R eplace b eltif it is stretched, cut or broken.

How to replace1. R em ove tool from hose and turn it sobottom faces up . Press the latches oneither side of tool and rem ove bottomplate (A ).

2. U nscrew the tw o Phillips screw s andrem ove belt guard (B ).

3. R em ove agitator includ ing end plates(C ) and discard.

4. Insp ect belt to ensure that it is in goodcondition. If belt is cracked, gouged orbroken, replace it (see follow ing section).

5. Insert brush roll through b elt and posi-tion belt over gear teeth (D ) on b rush roll.

6. W ith curved ends dow n, slide endplates (C ) of brush roll into slots (E) ontool.

replaced. H ow ever, if the belt iscracked , gouged or broken, it should berep laced .

The b elt can b e seen through the top ofthe nozzle or by rem oving the bottomplate and belt guard (Figs. 3-18 and 3-19).

2. G rasp turbine (E) and pull firm ly torem ove.

3. R em ove belt from turbine pulley (F).R ep lace w ith new belt.

4. W ith flat sides of turbine retainers (G )pointing dow n, slide retainers intogrooves (H) in tool housing and snapinto p lace.

5. R eplace brush roll, belt guard, andbottom plate as described in Figs. 3-20through 3-23.

Lubrication

The m otor is equipped w ith bearing s

that contain sufficient lubrication for the

life of the m otor. The addition of lubri-

cant could cause dam age.Therefore,do not add lubricant to motor bear-ings. The ag itator is equipped w ith tw o

ball bearings that should be lubricatedperiod ically b y a H oover Factory Service

Thermal protector A n internal therm al protector has been

designed into your cleaner to p rotect it

from overheating .

When the thermal protector activates,

the cleaner will stop running. If this hap -pens, proceed as follow s:

1. Turn the cleaner O FF and disconnectit from the electrical outlet.

2. C heck secondary and final filters for

dirt accum ulation.

3. R efer to “C learing blockages”section.

4.When cleaner is unplugged and the

motor cools for 30 minutes, the therm al

protector autom atically resets and clean -

ing m ay continue.

If the therm al protector continues to acti-

vate after follow ing the above steps, your

cleaner m ay need servicing (see “Service”

section).

2) C lear out hose.

3) Look into (C ) and rem ove blockage.
