Read to SucceedBy Rebecca PickeringThis year’s final to our annual Read toSucceed quiz saw the Richard Smith Hallonce again packed with characters fromour favourite children’s books. Whereelse could you see Sherlock Holmes andBob the Builder side by side? One tableseemed to have taken a wrong turn onthe yellow brick road!

This year we welcomed a record-breakingaudience, all keen to support the 21student and four staff teams who made it tothe final. They’d already beaten off toughcompetition, with 62 teams from acrossyears 7, 8 and 9 taking part in the heats.Tupton’s Read to Succeed quiz is now in itssixth year. As always, the final was heldon World Book Day and it was heart-

warming to see so many students giving uptheir evening to celebrate a love ofreading. At a time when many schools across Britainare working hard to get teenage boys toread, it was encouraging to see four year8 boys triumph in first place, with anotherall-boys team, The Captains of theUnderpants, from year 9, as runners up. The winning team, David, Daniel, Michaeland Josh, are to represent the school in theDerbyshire Literature Challenge. The countyquiz is now in its third year and this year’sfinal, to be held at County Hall on 19thMay, will see many schools from acrossDerbyshire entering their top four brainiestbookworms. Good luck boys!A big thank you to all the staff, studentsand parents who came along on 5thMarch, but most of all to the committedteam of markers and question compilers, led by our librarian, who are hard at workat both the Read to Succeed and countyquiz.

How would you do?Five questions from the final.1) Which orphan is raised, rather

Senior Citizens’Christmas PartyAt Tupton Hall School, we are dedicated tosupporting our local community. This year,we welcomed over 60 elderly localresidents to celebrate the festive season atour Senior Citizens’ Christmas Party.Students and staff brought along relativesand neighbours, and invites were alsodelivered to local residents, care homes, and retired staff. Now in its second year, the party isorganised and hosted by our sixth formstudents. The afternoon of fun and games endedwith a buffet served by the students.Entertainment was provided throughout bytalented pupils of all ages, withperformances from singers, musicians, poets, and even a juggling Santa!Staff and students had previouslydemonstrated their showbiz qualities in a‘Tupton’s Got Talent’ show held onelunchtime. This year’s talent show waspacked with nine spectacular acts, andticket sales raised over £600 to fund theparty.A huge thank you and well done to all thehard-working students and staff involved inorganising both events.

The Christmas Concert at Tupton Hall SchoolThis year’s concert was notable for the re-birth of the senior choir including staff and students under the direction of our new Head ofMusic Helen Wreiden ( dressed in Santa outfit ). They sang traditional pieces such as Silent Night and A Merry Christmas. Their livelyinterpretation of The Rhythm of Life and the beautiful Winter Solstice were also very well received. The varied programme also included performances by our rock band, Majesty, who sang The Last Song by McFly and by Nick Russwho performed Pachabel’s canon on electric guitar. Our wind band and the school orchestra performed traditional favourites such asChristmas Crackers, The Pink Panther and a medley from The Titanic. The performers were energetic, enthusiastic and talented. The audience was genuinely delighted with the originality and creativity ofsome of the solo pieces such as Don’t Cry for me Argentina ( April Heywood ) and Away from the Mistletoe by the A Level musicensemble. Merry Christmas everybody ( Slade ) provided the singalong finale to a tremendously uplifting evening.

Back to the 80sTupton Hall’s annual musical extravaganza – ‘Back to the 80s!’ was this year’s Christmasshow, and what a success it was! This year we opted for a musical that would be fun whilstbringing back some memories for people. Of course when we started this show it wasdepressing that some members of the cast could not pronounce Bros properly and hadnever heard of Milli Vanilli. When students were asking ‘What on earth is an Atari?’ and‘What’s the plot to Dirty Dancing? I’ve never seen it’, we very nearly packed up andretired, aged as they made the staff involved feel. BUT - we struggled on and made it inthe end with a very colourful and retro performance. As always the students workedtirelessly and all credit must go to them for their determination and commitment to the showas well as completing exams and coursework. They are a real credit to the school and tothe Expressive Arts Department. The show ran for three nights and sold out on two of those. The performance was fun, fullof energy and was enjoyed by all, with audience members asking if we could put on anextra night! For those of who enjoyed it, don’t worry, plans are already underway for nextyear’s show!

Flyinghigh in EnglishThirty Year 11 students went to Lea Greenon a residential trip in January. It was a jointEnglish and Sports College event whichfocused on improving students’ creatingwriting skills.

The experience began when the students, accompanied by six staff, ventured out into thedark night to roam the countryside. As well asfocusing on the surrounding smells and sounds, the students enjoyed splashing each other inpuddles and making mud angels on theground! Several wellies got stuck in thesquelchy earth but all returned safely to LeaGreen to write about the adventure. The next morning saw the students climbingand dangling far above the ground as theytackled the high ropes course. Flying high likeeagles searching for prey, the students workedtogether to ascend the apparatus, toweringabove the staff left firmly planted on the floor.Again the students gathered interesting wordsand images to describe their experience andthey headed inside to record their ideas. The trip was a huge success and the studentswere a credit to Tupton Hall School. Thecreative writing, which the students producedin the afternoon session, was very impressiveand the students should be exceptionally proudof their achievements.

YoungEnterpriseTrade FairThis years’ Young Enterprise company‘Change It’ had a successful day atthe Trade Fair in Chesterfield towncentre recently. In-keeping with theirname, the group of Y12 studentsdecided to attend in fancy dress

outfits that allowed them to changetheir appearance. These outfitscertainly provided much amusementfor the unsuspecting shoppers as wellas the students themselves! Although agreat deal of stock wasn’t sold, thejudges seemed impressed by the effortthat had gone into the outfits and thedecoration of the stall. The carefulpreparation of an excellent companyreport and business plan also paiddividends as the Judges took a keeninterest in these too. ‘Fingers crossedfor the company in the rest of thecompetition and well done to all thoseinvolved on the day.

FoodLeadershipProgrammeAs we work to extend ourschool holiday programme, several Y10 and Y11 studentshave been developing their‘Food Leadership’ skills, sothat they will be able to helpdeliver the new ‘Let’s GetCooking’ after school club. Onthe first day of half-term 8students worked with MissPearson to develop their abilityto lead others students througha series of healthy recipes. Thestudents were then invited backlater on in the week to assistMiss Pearson with the ‘Let’s GetCooking’ activity session foryounger students.

24-hour Living Maths and English Programme

Comic ReliefIn the run up to Red Nose day onMarch 13th assemblies were held toraise awareness of how Comic Reliefhelps poor people in African countries as well asthose in need in the UK. Displays were also placedaround the school with case studies of children inUganda and Kenya. The campaign to promoteeducation for all in Africa was highlighted through the‘Send my friend to school campaign’ that runs inpartnership with Comic Relief. Through a combinationof a non-uniform day, a lunchtime rock concert and arange of sponsored events the school has raised£2,000 with Y8 raising over £800 of this total. TheHead Patrick Cook said ‘I am delighted that ourstudents responded so positively on Red nose day.Hopefully, they enjoyed raising money for such agood cause whilst also developing their awareness ofpoverty at home and in Africa.’

During January and February two groups of students participated in our‘24-Hour Living Maths and English’ programmes.Based at Lea Green, the overall aim of the programmes was to help Y11students improve their confidence and ability in both Maths and English.Run in association with the PE department as part of the Sports Collegedevelopment programme, students used practical activities as the foundationfor revision and coursework. Student used the experience of a night hike asthe basis for a piece of English coursework, whilst other students had to usetrigonometry to solve varying Mathematical calculations. Each of the programmes were both physical and mentally demanding, however the quality of the work produced by students was excellent. Weall just hope that the confidence gained by all of the students throughouteach programme extends through to their final GCSE examinations.
