Workshop Proceedings: A Glimpse!
? Opening Speech
? The role of LEAN in 'Make in India' drive
? Fundamentals of Lean and its need in today's world

Lean is a systemic method for the elimination of
• Waste ("Muda").
• Overburden ("Muri")
• Unevenness in workloads ("Mura").
•
'Good Lean Great' to make the students understand the actual application and implication
of lean.
1) MACE's success mantra:
• Understanding the Supplier's need
• Technology Improvement
• Hand-held support to suppliers
• Japanese Tools
There were Corporate case presentations:
•
• Poka Yoke
• 5S, 3K, 3G, 3R
• Quality Circle
• Lean Manufacturing System
Kaizen/ Suggestion Schemes
• The role of LEAN in tomorrow's manufacturing
• The role of LEAN in tomorrow's Service Sector
• Corporate case presentations:
'Good Lean Great'
• Panel Discussion by industry gurus
In this competitive arena Lean has become the most widely used methodology for reducing
costs, removing waste, shortening lead times, improving responsiveness and building high
performance teams. Lean is not limited only to “Manufacturing Excellence” but it is also an
integral part of “Business Process Excellence.
Students from School of Engineering and Technology, School of Law and School of Management
attended the workshop in large numbers. There were many key learnings and students felt
satisfied to finally be able to understand and appreciate the need of lean in the industry today.
13
1) Convergys-
Customer service is a reality attached with every product today – hence the need to have
call centers. Every phone rep or agent you talk to, is trained before they start taking calls.
And then they are evaluated from time to time to check compliance to policies and
procedures. And the next step is, of course, coaching them for development purposes.
The Convergys' standard Quality Model is Quality for Performance (Q4P)
shifts the role of the quality team from where we are today – focus on providing support
through third party remote call monitoring – to a more effective role of audit and call
calibration of Team Leaders to drive more effective, accurate call monitoring and
coaching.
14
Ms. Savita Bradoo (Director, Quality), Convergys India Services Pvt Ltd., held an extremely
interactive session with the students, wherein she gauged the reactions of the students towards
their beliefs of quality in life in a very simplistic manner.
The Q n A round then ensued where students asked many a questions pertaining to Lean in Life,
Lean in Service sector and the underlying principles.
An important segment of the workshop was the Panel discussion, whose motive was to identify
the role of lean in today's education system.
A lot of points were identified and a combined need was felt by all to include the teachings of lean,
quality practices in the curriculum.
Creating Skilled work force:
Education System:
• Change in curriculum to include technology subjects
• Teaching methods to make students more application oriented for new concepts
• Students exposure to actual systems in Industry
• Academia and Industry to work together to support each other
15
