TREVOR & MARGS BLOG

Ciao a tutti! We kicked off this week with a visit from The Hon. James Merlino MP. We were excited to showcase the wonderful work happening at BSPS and the minister was particularly interested in seeing our new building in action. He did, however, have an ulterior motive for visiting. Mr Merlino has been recognised by the Italian Republic, receiving the Order of the Star of Italy, for his role in helping us establish BSPS as Victoria’s first Italian bilingual school. The presentation was, however, overshadowed with a musical presentation from our Foundation students along with a cameo appearance from Giuliano on the recorder! Our 5/6 students spent last weekend catching up on some rest after their whirlwind camp to Sovereign Hill. A camp so early in the year is always a little challenging to bring together, but I’m pleased to report the students and staff had a fantastic time and came home all smiles (albeit a little tired)… It would not be possible to run camps without having staff so willing to give up their time. Thank you Maree, Liz, Rachel, Aydan, Kate, Andrea and Alessandro for all the work that went into planning, organising and attending this event!Tomorrow night we are gearing up for our Information Night and Peppercorn Picnic. We had a fantastic turnout last year and have our fingers and toes crossed that we have the same success this year. The Peppercorn Picnic is a great chance to catch up with some familiar faces and help us welcome our new families to the school community.

We will see you at 4.30 in the Learning Areas and then from 5.30 to share some food and drinks outside – the weather is looking to be perfect!See you tomorrow night! Trevor & Marg

Grade 5/6 students have just returned from an action packed three days at Sovereign Hill camp. We learnt about life in the gold rush, how to find gold and how the early miners used inventions to solve problems. We watched the sound and light show, "Blood on the Southern Cross" and went to the theatre to enjoy a pantomime. The students showed their maturity and independence, exploring Sovereign Hill on their own, and returning regularly, always on time, to check back in with the teachers! On our way home we stopped at "the Tangled Maze" to get lost for a bit and play a few rounds of mini gold. A massive thank you to students and staff for making the camp a really enjoyable experience!

PERFORMING ARTS

Here we go again parents! I am looking for enthusiastic parents who are willing to contribute their time and skills to assist in the creation of this year’s end of year concert. Any parents or relatives or friends who are keen to help in the lead up to the end of year school performance, please come to meet with me Friday the 10th of March from 9.00 to 10.30 to the BSPS’s staff room.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION

Exciting news for grade 3 to 6 students! We have received our first Sporting Schools grant for 2017. Our older students will be participating in a series of clinics run by a qualified coach from Touch Football Australia. There will be no charge for these clinics as all expenses are covered by the grant.

Touch football is an exciting, fast paced and inclusive sport. Grace 3/4 will have their clinics on Mondays, starting next Monday, Feb 27. Grace 5/6 students will have their clinics on Fridays, starting Friday March 3rd.

Please remind students to dress in sports clothes and shoes on these days, as well as on their specialist days.

Rachel OHSC

Those who attend this meeting will gain an understanding of the end of year school performance through an introductory presentation. In this meeting, I will speak about the idea behind the show, discuss ideas about props, costumes, music, and seek to collect the names of volunteers who would like to be involved in this new project. The school concert will take place in October. As I am sure you know, this type of event requires a lot of forward planning and collaboration. It is for these reasons that it is better to meet sooner rather than later. It would work best if you could be at the school by 9:00am.Feel free to contact me at [email protected] look forward to meeting with you in the near future.Kind regards,Daniele Vitali

Welcome back to another year of Out of School Care at Brunswick South Primary School. We have had a fabulous start to the term! It began with three Curriculum days packed full of fun and engaging learning activities. There was silk screen printing on T-shirts, a whole foods workshop on healthy cooking and diet and, to top the week - a petting zoo which included legless, carnivorous reptiles of the scaly kind. Welcome to all of our new students! We are looking forward to a really progressive and fun program this year. The OSCH Sub Committee would also like to welcome parents from across the community to Volunteer their time to help assist make this fabulous program grow and prosper.

There is a position available for a parent who would be interested in engaging in the OSCH Sub Committee whom believes they can add to the enrichment of the program. We would especially like to hear from you if you have a penchant for numbers but all other applications would also be desirable. If you think you would be interested in joining this committee then please contact Sarah Moon via email: [email protected] or, come and have a chat with myself (Ruarda) or Vivien at drop off or pick up.

Here we have Jess assisting in the beautiful, methodical, process of silk screen printing. The illustrations were designed by (last year’s) students and this year on curriculum day students were invited to screen print onto a t-shirt. This was a very popular activity.

Here are our students engaging in our petting zoo workshop. Needless to say they are both courageous and inquisitive.

Ideas, ideas, ideas… whether it is a story, a game, a playdate or a delicious recess snack, all of our work must start with an inspirational idea first.

In Writing, our focus has been on drawing on our experiences and our imagination to help us find ideas for our writing pieces.

Our students have turned commonplace objects such as a banana into a toupee, a thousand block used in maths into a towering alien space vehicle and the crane next door into a lumbering pre-historic brontosaurus.

We have also been drawing on our imagination for the design of our food trucks in Design and Technology. Soon, the streets of Brunswick may be filled with food trucks such as ‘Crepes for your Mates’ and ‘Waffle Wheels’. Keep the creativity flowing!!

This week we have had a focus on getting into line quickly and sitting down to wait for the teacher (as soon as the first bell rings). Thanks to the students for making such a great effort to make our entry into class calm and peaceful, it has made a huge difference!

GRADE 3/4

ARTEWhat do Italian fashion, art, cuisine and landscape all share? Apart from international recognition, the answer is simple: colour.

The Foundation students will explore colours and the connections with culture and emotional connections this term. After learning how to safely use and share the equipment in the Art room, they will work and play with paint to try and answer some questions such as ‘How does colour make you feel?’ and ‘What happens if we mix these two colours together?’

And for those who feel the holidays are a distant memory, the art of grade 1/2 students is bringing it all back! Oil pastels drawing with the sea as a theme and representations of movement through lines and colours evokes long days in the sun and our recent school break. Students will progress into exploring collage techniques and how we use paper to create texture and contrast in our artworks.

In order to paint like a master, technique is of course important. Grade 3/4 students will explore how they can apply paint without the use of a paintbrush. Through using everyday objects in different ways, they will create interesting texture and contrast in their artwork. Students will combine collage materials to create mixed media artwork.

And finally, grade 5/6 students are living in the real world. These little workers are planning and designing a city of detailed illustrated wooden blocks. In their city, they will include sculptures made of smaller colorful pieces of wood. They will then plan some form of installation to present their creation to the public.

If you want to follow our art journey, you can find us on Twitter @SpecialistsBSPS
