PROVIDING PERFORMING ARTS OPPORTUNITIES The Primary Production has been the focus of this term’s Creative Arts program. The production featured the majority of Primary

students with all classes making a contribution to the show. Although the production featured many individual students with performance

skills there was so much more to celebrate and these types of events develop collaboration, cooperation and confidence in all of our

students. To see so many students on the stage enjoying themselves as they sang, danced and acted in front of their families and

friends is something that will be remembered for some time. The artistic talents of the students went beyond the stage as atmosphere

was created in the hall through the props and decorations which were all done by students assisted by parents and teachers. Well done

students and thankyou staff and parent helpers. It was a fine example of what can be achieved when everyone pitches in to help

achieve a common goal. A special mention to Mrs Brown and Mrs Thornhill, for without your vision, creativity, and patience the show

A SPECIAL WEEK FOR YEAR 12

This is the last week for Year 12

students. Students and their

parents will be full of mixed

emotions this week as they look

forward to the future but reflect

back on the past. I hope that

school has equipped you for the

rigours of future life and that you

follow your hopes and dreams.

There are many teachers

especially Ms Vis who will also be

feeling emotional this week. Being

a Year 12 teacher is a special

privilege as you support students

achieve their hopes and dreams

and share life’s ups and downs.

Year 12 have been a vibrant and

compassionate group of students

and I look forward to a week that

celebrates the past 13 years.

QUIGGY CUP 2016 has seen the introduction of a new sport initiative at Molong Central School, The Quiggy Cup. Every Wednesday in first period all students from Years 7 – 11 participate in the competition. Students are organised into 12 teams that compete in a round robin type format involving 3 different sports. So far this year students have competed in Netball, Touch Football, Volleyball, Oz tag, Indoor Games, Ultimate Frisbee and European Handball. Each team receives points depending on whether they have a win, loss or draw with bonus points on offer for exemplary skills and sportsmanship. At the end of each term, the team with the most points is announced the winner of the Quiggy cup and is awarded a prize. At the end of the year, all points will be tallied and the winning team will enjoy a special day to celebrate their victory. The Quiggy Cup provides students with some unique opportunities. At Molong Central School, we participate in the NSW Premier’s Sporting Challenge Sports Leadership Program and have successfully trained close to 40 sports leaders in Years 9, 10 and 11. These sports leaders predominately run the Quiggy Cup (amongst other things) thus utilising their leadership skills and sports abilities to help others. It was decided to trial the Quiggy Cup in a first period to see the benefit, if any, on overall student behaviour in classes. The result has been nothing but positive with many teachers commenting on how settled students appear to be. We have also been able to increase the amount of physical activity that our students participate in thus pushing us over the mandatory physical activity requirements as set out by the DEC. We have seen a real sense of belonging and a healthy competitive streak starting to develop within the teams as they strive to become the inaugural winners of the coveted Quiggy Cup.

STEM…THE LATEST BUZZWORD IN EDUCATION STEM is a curriculum based on the idea of educating students in four specific disciplines — science, technology, engineering and mathematics — in an interdisciplinary and applied approach. Rather than teach the four disciplines just as separate and discrete subjects, STEM integrates them into a cohesive learning unit based on real-world applications. Next year Molong Central will be teaching STEM to Year 7-10 students, the approach will have Year groups working together with multiple teachers from the Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths faculties using inquiry based learning in groups. STEM will be introduced in Year 7 and 9 and will have 2 periods per cycle focussing on the STEM model of learning. In Year 8 and 10 students will have 6 periods per fortnight and they will engage in group based research using hands on activities and approaches to problem solving. Topics being examined include robotics, coding & renewable energy. The goal is to learn by applying the knowledge and skills to real world problems. This, we hope, will be more engaging for the students as they see their research having meaningful results. It is also hoped that this engagement will carry over into other CORE subjects. The school is very excited about this new focus, with staff being trained during Term 4 and new resources being arranged to facilitate the classroom activities.

WORK EXPERIENCE My name is Erin Coyte and I was lucky enough to do a week of work experience at Taronga Zoo in Sydney. I worked in the wildlife hospital where I was able to spend time with all different animals, like ringtail possums and a two tailed Water Dragon. The highlight was getting to hug a 30kg Southern Hairy Nosed Wombat. I met other girls doing work experience and they were from all different places in NSW. I had an amazing time at Taronga Zoo and I would like to say an enormous thank you to Mr Taylor for helping me organise this experience.

“Mischievous Magic” strikes Molong Central Last Thursday K-6 students and staff provided an absolutely entertaining performance by presenting their production called “Mischievous Magic”. Every child in the school performed in one way or another and it was fantastic to see. The entertainment was faultless – Absolutely Fabulous! Many thanks to Audrey Brown and Donna Thornhill for the very entertaining script and direction. Without their inspiration the production would not have been possible. Also, a special thanks to the following people who helped out behind the scenes: Backstage – Kath Schaefer, Mary-Ellen Betts, Shane Aldridge, Libby Peschka, Damon Knott, Kayla Schmich.

Last week a pink note was sent home to remind students that the

Book Week Character Parade will be on this Thursday 22nd

September at 2:00 pm. There will be no prizes but each child who

participates will receive a Merit Award. The theme is Australian

Book Characters. I look forward to seeing you at the parade.

On the back of the pink note there was information regarding

competitions for Book Week. Students should deliver their entries

to the Library during Week 1 of next term. Each entry will be

judged on its originality and the best in each category will be

awarded a prize.

We are busy this week completing students’ CWA Mongolian

projects. Thank you to all students who have worked consistently

over the past week during lessons and at Lunch to finish their

entries. If your child has a project to enter that is still at home it

must be handed in at the Library by 3:15 pm on Thursday

afternoon.

Please remind your child to return overdue books. Borrowing is

permissible over the holidays.
