Thank you to Katrina Brown, the Plan-it Youth Coordinator for this article and her ongoing commitment to Plan-it Youth. Molong Central School is celebrating its 10 th successful year of Plan-it Youth. This rewarding program seeks to expose student’s interests and abilities in order to allow them to select and direct their studies towards achievable goals. This is achieved by mentors working closely with the student through the completion of a tool-kit which aids in positive decisions. A couple of weeks ago, the first round of Plan-it Youth kicked off for 2014. This session, we have a total of 6 mentors and students involved, with many long-standing mentors continuing to devote their time to help and assist our students to achieve their goals. I would like to thank Ann Dib, Stacey Lo Faro, Margaret Carroll, Kevin Watts and Sheena Clark for their ongoing support and commitment to the program. I would also like to welcome Jim Doak as a new mentor to Plan- it Youth. The students involved in this first round of the program are Year 10 students, Victoria Miller, Hannah Hanson, Mitchell Cotter, Erin Abrahams and Breanna Dante. All students, in the past, have benefitted greatly from this program and highly value all that the mentors have to offer. If you would like to be part of this program as a mentor or know someone that would, please do not hesitate to contact the school on 63668224. He also provides opportunities for tuition in flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet and trombone through the Band Program for both Primary and Secondary students. The Band Program is flourishing and now has 32 students involved and interested in learning to play a musical instrument. There is an excellent 11 piece Stage Band (Jazz and Latin repertoire), a 10 piece Concert Band and a 10 piece Secondary Vocal Ensemble. Student interest in Music is gathering pace and the students are dedicated learners and participants. Along with the opportunities in flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet and trombone, there are opportunities for guitar, bass and drum tuition after school. In the Secondary classes, Mr Kay provides a diverse range of learning experiences that encompasses ethnomusicology, music history, performance, composition and ensemble experiences. Composition and performance experiences often include the opportunity for students to major on an instrument they choose and form ensembles. Performance opportunities occur at assemblies, school and community functions such as the “Meet you in Molong” motorcycle rally. The music courses in school offer opportunities to learn about live sound production using a professionally designed sound installation and studio production. The Music Department has plans to convert part of the music storeroom into a recording space. MCS would like to thank Mr Kay for his ongoing energy, enthusiasm, hard work, expertise and talent in coordinating these programs for our K-12 students. GENERAL INDUCTION TRAINING

PROGRAM (GIT) - FORMERLY KNOWN

AS THE OH&S WHITE CARD On Friday March 14th, 17 Molong Central School Year 10 students obtained their White Card qualification with flying colours after attending a one-day training course. The Occupational Health and Safety course was delivered by Mr Bob Hughes, an accredited trainer. The course involved lectures on site safety, how to keep the work environment safe and what to do in case you have an accident. The day was spent studying, with talks from the trainer, followed by a short assessment. The training enabled the students to not only understand the importance of work, health and safety in the workplace but also allows them to access construction sites in order for them to participate in work placement. (This is a legal requirement) A temporary certificate was issued at the end of the day and they will receive the official plastic card in the post. Congratulations to the following students for, not only obtaining their qualification, but also for their great behaviour and attitude throughout the day: Kade Barrow, Sam Cummings, Rob Dugmore, Nadim Elniz, Jayden Fahey, Jay Hanrahan, Matt Hobbs, Sam Kinsella, Ben Kirk, Luke Neil, Lachlan McCann-Brasch, Lachlan Middleton, Zac Philpott, Matt Regan, Jamie Stewart, Billy Thornberry and Scott Twiss. SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING

CHALLENGE Eleven students from Years 9 & 10 recently travelled to Orange to participate in the Science and Engineering Challenge. Tarryn Miles, Victoria Miller, Jacob Huggett and Taylor Brouff built structures from straws and paper that had to hold a significant weight, and continue to hold it whilst on the 'earthquake machine' which shook the board and structure. They built some very cool, tall structures and earned bonus points for their height. Marcus Van Elk, Brandon Adams and Tane Hoete started the day building a water reticulation system for a town, and showed excellent planning and communication skills in keeping their team focused and active in construction. These two teams swapped at lunchtime. Emalee Johnston, Bethany Johnston, Courtney Walker and Hannah Hanson spent the whole day building and testing a hovercraft. The two girls who had tried this activity last year were keen to use the learning they had acquired and built an excellent hovercraft that not only performed brilliantly in testing but developed some strange problems in the final trials. The best part was watching each student thinking about their problem, observing their test results, trying things out and communicating with their group. There was great scientific thinking happening! The students were also fine citizens and showed excellent manners to the various students and staff from other schools on the day. Thanks are due to the University of Newcastle and Rotary for providing the resources and expertise necessary to run this excellent learning program. Brian Evans - Science Head Teacher

Tabloids Sports Day On Thursday the 20th of March, Kindergarten, Year 1 and

Year 2 students attended a Tabloid Sports Day. The

students greatly enjoyed the variety of equipment and new

games to play. Some activities required concentration and

team work to achieve the goal and it was very pleasing to

see students encouraging each other. Thank you very much

to the parent helpers who came along and ran the activities,

your support was greatly appreciated by staff and students.

Harmony Day activities Harmony Day is a day of cultural respect for everyone who

calls Australia home – from the traditional owners of this

land to those who have come from the many countries

around the world.

Last Friday students in K-6 came to school dressed in

Orange (the Harmony Day colour) or another country’s

national dress to celebrate diversity and tolerance of other

cultures.

Students were involved in a variety of activities within their

classrooms as well as cooking a variety of dishes from

around the world to share. Crocodile, kangaroo and

witchetty grubs were on one class menu. Other dishes

included sushi, stir fries, spaghetti, French baguettes and

the very Australian lamington! There was lots of activity

around the school, both in and out of the classrooms!

Drop off Zone A reminder to all parents and caregivers

that the drop off zone in Smith Street is

exactly that. Parents need to move off

quickly after dropping off or picking up their

child each day. It can be quite dangerous

when there is a high level of traffic about.

The police will be monitoring this area in the

future. Have a wonderful week!! Jane Backhouse Deputy Principal - Primary

Hi everyone, Week 8 in the library was extremely busy and the library staff, ably assisted on Wednesday by Mr Doug Watson, Mrs Tracy Middleton and students, have now moved the books and furniture back into place. There have been a few changes which students will have to get used to but I think they will be beneficial to students and staff in the long term. Please call in and see the new look library. With the activity over the past week I have yet to place the remaining orders for the Book Fair so this will be done as soon as possible. Students in K-6 classes have entered the ‘Reading Oasis’ colouring-in competition and the winners will be published in the newsletter next week. We have acquired many new and interesting books for the library collection and I look forward to the students borrowing them in the coming months. It has come to my attention during the moving of the collection that there are books being damaged, particularly by water, that are then being returned to the library. Unfortunately, students are not mentioning the damage and as the books have dried out, the damage is going undetected in some instances. It would be helpful if all students could place a plastic bag inside their library bags to ensure added protection to books. Regrettably this will not stop some students from being negligent with books they take home. I appeal to parents to keep library books in a safe place while they are at home. When my children borrowed a book it stayed in their library bags when not being read and used to hang on their bedroom door knobs. They always knew where to find it on library day and pack it to take back to the library. Have a great week reading and talking to your children!
