PRINCIPAL’S NOTES

ASPIRE Aboriginal Artists visit Last Wednesday some of our secondary students were treated to a workshop with two Aboriginal artists from Orange. The students had a wonderful day and produced two large canvas artworks, one of which will be displayed in the school and the other donated to a local organisation. We sincerely thank the University of NSW ASPIRE program for providing this experience for our students free of charge.

Footy colours Day/ Junior Disco This Wednesday students are encouraged to wear their favourite footy teams colours. The money raised, by a gold coin donation will be used to support children in hospital. This will be followed by a Junior Disco at the Memorial club from 6pm-7.30pm. There is a $2 entry fee.

Year 6 to 7 Transition Day The year 6 to 7 Transition will be held this Thursday to help prepare our year 6 students for high school. They will experience 4 different secondary subjects.

Presentation Day Parents, carers and community members are cordially invited to join us for our annual Presentation Day next Tuesday. It commences at 10am and showcases our student’s achievements for the year.

Santa’s Letters The letters to Santa have been submitted, with most primary students putting in their requests for gifts. The letter box leaves next Monday with Santa hopefully replying soon after. We very much thank Mrs Lloyd for organising this very popular event.

Primary Reporting Grades With report time fast approaching, it is timely to remind parents and carers the following information. Students in each year level are graded on achievement and application in each of the six Key Learning Areas using an A-E grading system for achievement and a 1-5 numerical rating for application. Key Learning Areas are Literacy (English), Numeracy (Mathematics), History and Geography, Science and Technology, Personal Development, Health and Physical Education and Creative and Performing Arts. Staff make professional judgements based on assessments. They also use departmental descriptors and work examples. Children are compared to all students in the state, in that year group, in that subject. The “C” grading accounts for about 60% of all students. A “C” rating means that all is well and students are achieving at the required level for their year and subject. “A” and “B” grades are few in any given cohort. There are no C+ or C- grades when test results are handed out in class. A child could receive a “C” grading near the top of the C grouping, pushing towards a “B” and conversely receive a “C” grading but be at the lower end of the “C” grouping. A “C” grade is what you are looking for. A’s and B’s are restricted to only a small percentage of students across the state.

Year 1/2 Last week in class, students began some Christmas craft with Mrs Norris. The students were scrunching crepe paper into small balls and then gluing them onto a Santa hat template. Students have also been working on some craft booklets in the afternoons after swimming. We have been thoroughly enjoying our time at the pool and so far, students are showing such great progress. We have this one week remaining for swimming so students are reminded to bring their swimmers every day and make sure their names are on their belongings. Next week we will be cleaning up our classroom and students will be bringing home lots of artworks and belongings from the classroom. Presentation Day is on Tuesday next week, and we hope to see lots of parents and friends there.

Year 3/4 We are heading into the final two weeks of school! Week 9 is the second week of the Swim Safe Program. Well done for great effort and behaviour during the first week. Fingers crossed the weather stays fine (and the water warm!) Years 3/4 will be performing two short Christmas songs at our school Presentation Day Assembly next week. The lyrics will be sent home for homework to learn. On the day we will be wearing school uniform however, I ask students to come prepared with some “Christmas Sparkle” that they can easily put on and wear. For example; Santa or Elf hat, Reindeer ears, tinsel, sparkly bow-tie, colourful hair ribbons, bells, flashing lights, baubles etc. This Wednesday is a footy colours day/gold coin donation. Students can come to school dressed in your favourite footy/sporting team colours! There is also a Primary Disco at the Memorial Club starting at 6pm. Have a great week!

Books 4 Outback On Wednesday the 29th November we had Ross and Neil from Books 4 Outback visit our school. These gentlemen run a not-for-profit charity based in Newcastle and personally deliver pre-loved books to enhance the lives of children in regional areas. We were very lucky to be chosen as a school on their current regional trip. They very kindly donated two large boxes of non-fiction and fiction books as well as a bag of teacher’s resources. These books will be distributed amongst the students in the upcoming days. A huge thankyou to both Ross and Neil for all their efforts in keeping such an amazing charity going!
