Welcome back Everyone!

I hope that each of you had a great break and enjoyed special time with family and friends.

Time away from everyday tasks can be remarkably restorative, can’t it?

I am confident you have all returned to BSPS with renewed enthusiasm and vigour.

A BIG welcome to all the new members of our community!

Last week we signed off on a new building and plans are being drawn up as I type, for the new car park.

Thank you to the parents that responded to our Bike Shed Survey.

The Environment sub-committee will announce the survey results shortly.

Thank you also to the community members, led by our fabulous sub-committee for all the landscaping that was carried out over the summer break.

On a much sadder note, I am sorry to inform you all that Matilda Robertson passed away suddenly earlier this year.

Matilda was a valued member of our community, both in her roles as a music teacher and as a parent.

Constantly giving back to BSPS, she leaves a wonderful legacy of developing a love and appreciation of music in so many young people’s lives.

Our kindest wishes go out to Matilda’s family and friends. She is sadly missed.

Have a wonderful week.

The students have been very intrigued with the new space and have enjoyed the additional play space during the day.Our gratitude and thanks goes out to the volunteers for all their hard work!

DOGS IN SCHOOL POLICY Rationale This policy aims to ensure the safety and well-being of all members of the Brunswick South Primary School community.Dogs are an important part of life for many Brunswick South Primary School families, and as such are often included in day-to-day activities such as walking children to and from school. The school appreciates this inclusion and values pet ownership as an educational experience. The school also acknowledges other people can find contact with dogs stressful, even frightening.AimsThis policy aims takes into consideration the needs and expectations of all members of the Brunswick South Primary School community, and also aims to minimise the risk of accident or injury to people or animals within the school grounds. To this end, the policy sets out a Code of Conduct for all families wishing to bring their dogs onto the school grounds. Failure to comply with the Code of Conduct in respect of a dog means that dog is no longer permitted in the school grounds. Existing council by-laws already cover issues such as dog restraint and the need for owners to pick up their dog’s excrement. For clarity these matters are also covered in this policy.Code of ConductAll parents and other carers intending to bring their dogs to school must adhere to this Code of Conduct which states:

All dogs must be on a lead that keeps the dog reasonably close to the adult at all times. Dogs’ leads need to be held by adults only. Dogs may be tied up away from door entries on a short lead for brief periods of time (giving enough time to take a child into class).

Dogs must be walked around the perimeter of the main playground when collecting children. No dogs accompanying children to and from school are allowed inside any school buildings. Parents are responsible for cleaning up any soiling by their dog on or near the school grounds.

Dogs are not allowed to drink directly from the school water fountains. Water can be provided to dogs from the water fountains using a brought container.

When bringing dogs to the school, parents and carers do so with an absolute understanding that their dog has no behavioural issues around other people or other dogs, has never displayed any aggression towards children, and that the owner believes the dog is fully trustworthy in a school environment.

The policy clarifies that dogs will not be allowed in classrooms or the rest of the school building unless on an explicitly arranged visit. The policy also makes it clear that bringing dogs to school is a privilege to be enjoyed not a right. The school retains the right to direct that a dog is not to be brought into the school grounds at the Principal’s discretion.Complaints about a dog’s or its carers’ behaviour in breach of the Code of Conduct can be directed to the Principal.Pets are an important part of our school community. Brunswick South Primary School is committed to teaching children appropriate behaviour when approaching and interacting with all pets to further minimise the risk of accidents and injury.

ACCESS TO SCHOOL GROUNDS POLICYIntroduction

The school encourages the development of a sense of school community through the interaction of parents, and the interaction of parent helpers in the education of the students at the school, while keeping in mind the Principal's duty of care in relation to the safety and wellbeing of all students and others who attend upon the school premises. This policy is to be read in this light and all members of the school community are encouraged to respect the policy while being invited to suggest, recommend and participate in other activities and opportunities for involvement that will encourage community development.

Background

1. This policy governs who should be permitted to enter upon the school premises, recognising that no person has an automatic right to enter but rather it is an operational decision, which must fit with the Principal's duty of care.

2. Safety is an important consideration in access to the premises and ensuring the safety of children and adults on the premises is important for the school to know who is present and why.

3. This policy acknowledges the Principal's duty of care, which extends to anyone attending on the school premises at any time.

4. The School Council's function as outlined in the Education and Training Reform Act 2006 to regulate and facilitate the after hours use of the school premises and grounds is acknowledged.

5. The aspiration of the school to develop a healthy school community in all aspects including parental interaction is acknowledged.

6. The Licensed Children's Service obligation on the Out of School Hours Care program (OSHC) as required by the Children's Services Act is acknowledged.

7. This policy also acknowledges that there is more than one community in the school and it is a challenge to balance the interests and needs of those various communities.

Key Policy Points

1. No person shall have access to school premises prior to 8.45am or after 3.45pm on school days without the express permission of the Principal or as permitted under this policy.

2. Prior to drop off and after pick up the duty of care for children is the responsibility of their parents or carers and not the responsibility of the Principal or the school.

3. Visitors to the school are regulated by the visitors section - see below.

Standing Approvals

1. Parents visiting classrooms by arrangement with the classroom teacher.

2. Those people involved in OSHC program.

3. Parents entering school premises for the purpose of parent teacher interviews. It is noted that it is up to the parents to supervise any children they bring with them to those interviews.

4. People attending approved school functions, such as, school welcome picnic, school concerts, etc.

5. Music Lessons held out of school hours.

6. The School Art Fair including setting up and packing up at which times the school either provides a program for the children of those families involved or children who are not permitted.

7. Any other activity that is expressly permitted by the Principal under this policy.

Permission should be given in writing.

8. People attending the school for associated education programs, such as bike education and the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Foundation Program, parent reading, ride to school day parades and other associated activities. Volunteers at these activities are governed by the School’s Volunteers Policy.

9. Some of these activities will be covered by the Visitors section - see below.

10. The Staffroom is available until 10am on each school day for use by parents remaining on the school premises after the second bell in the morning to gather and continue to meet and talk. Those parents and others not utilising the staffroom should leave the school premises within a reasonable time after the second bell.

11. Parents are encouraged to not arrive on the school premises before 15 minutes prior to collection of children after school unless specific arrangements have been made for the staff room or other areas to be used or a school assembly is taking place.

Visitor's Policy

1. From time to time people, other than parents, visit the school e.g. sales people or those invited to assist in the classroom and other educational activities.

2. Visitors must respect the role of the teachers and the Principal in running the education program of the school, and must follow the directions of the Principal and teachers at all times. Their behaviour should at all times be respectful and an appropriate model for the students consistent with the student code of conduct. Visitors should not smoke on the school premises, and should not consume alcohol at the time of working with children or prior to working with children.

3. Visitors requiring a working with children check must have that check and have the confirmation of that check available at the time they enter the school premises. All visitors must sign in and out in an appropriate visitor’s book which may be located at the school office or in the local classroom area, where the visitor is helping out. Visitors must wear a visitors badge during their visit especially if they are not a regular visitor. All parent volunteers should be briefed in their helper role, maintain confidentiality and if necessary obtain a working with children check.

Ratification and Implementation

Upon ratification by School Council of this policy, it will be distributed via the newsletter and made available on the BSPS website for the whole school community

Review

This policy will be reviewed as part of the school’s review cycle.

Congratulations to our Year 1s & 2s on a fantastic start to 2017. It has been wonderful to hear about your adventures over the summer holidays, some of which have already been used as inspiration for story writing and as topics to interview one another about!

In our first week, we have been focused on getting to know our new peers and teachers. We have also been working enthusiastically to master the new routines of the Years 1 & 2 building (it's all ours!).

Why don’t you come in and visit our three new zone? Zona Deserto, Zona Foresta e Zona Oceano!

Thank you to our families for helping us navigate our new line up area in the mornings, we really appreciate your help! Soon, we will be inviting you to join us for reading in the mornings. Stay tuned!

Musica with Giuliano!

Exploring the new playground space at lunchtime...

GRADE 1/2

We’ve successfully made it through our first few days of school! Steffie, Ivana, Michelle, Lucy, Giuliano and Nadia are extremely impressed with how quickly the Foundation students are learning our routine. We have been learning how to use Whole Body Listening on the carpet, how to line up in our learning groups and how to work independently at the tables. We have some super cleaners in the group who have been keeping our area very tidy too! It has been lovely to hear lots of students using their character strength of Bravery to make new friends by asking “Will you play with me today?” and “Will you be my friend?”. A Foundation newsletter will be going home soon containing lots of important information so please check bags and emails regularly! The Foundation Teaching Team
