Lift every voice and sing, till earth and Heaven ring, Ring with the harmonies of liberty;
Let our rejoicing rise, high as the listening skies, Let it resound loud as the rolling sea.
Sing a song full of the faith that the dark past has taught us, Sing a song full of the hope that the present has brought us;
Facing the rising sun of our new day begun, Let us march on till victory is won.
Stony the road we trod, bitter the chastening rod,
Felt in the days when hope unborn had died; Yet with a steady beat, have not our weary feet, Come to the place for which our fathers sighed?
We have come over a way that with tears has been watered, We have come, treading our path through the blood of the slaughtered;
Out from the gloomy past, till now we stand at last Where the white gleam of our bright star is cast. God of our weary years, God of our silent tears, Thou Who hast brought us thus far on the way;
Thou Who hast by Thy might, led us into the light, Keep us forever in the path, we pray.
Lest our feet stray from the places, our God, where we met Thee. Lest our hearts, drunk with the wine of the world, we forget Thee.
Shadowed beneath Thy hand, may we forever stand, True to our God, true to our native land.

As we observe Black History Month, attention is brought to bear upon the lives of
ordinary persons who have done extraordinary things. Their lives serve to encourage
and challenge present and future generations to press forward in achievements and
contributions to the good of all. Of those individuals from our community are Annie

Among their collective contributions, they have served as community advocates,
worked with Daisy Bates in the desegregation of Little Rock Central High School, been

administrators of the Anti-Poverty Program and the Little Rock Housing Authority,
been a deputy sheriff for Pulaski County, Arkansas, been Vice Mayor and Mayor of the
City of Little Rock, been a psychiatric nurse, been an educator and given so much to
civic interests. Perhaps the personal statement of Annie Abrams is the sentiment that
Erma Hendrix holds and that the late Charles Bussey held as well: “Service is the rent
we pay to stay on God's earth. I'm paying my rent.”
My friend, these are examples of what greatness looks like. It is not seen in fanfare
and glaring media attention. It is seen in strong character, determination, and in quiet
sacrifice and unselfish service. This is what we celebrate during this Black History
Month – those who have risen to greatness because they served. Our Lord and Savior
Jesus Christ has said, “He that is greatest among you shall be your servant” -Matthew
23:11 KJV.

As we observe Black History Month, attention is brought to bear upon the lives of
ordinary persons who have done extraordinary things. Their lives serve to encourage
and challenge present and future generations to press forward in achievements and
contributions to the good of all. Of those individuals from our community are Annie
Abrams, St. John’s own Erma Hendrix, and Charles E. Bussey.
Among their collective contributions, they have served as community advocates,
worked with Daisy Bates in the desegregation of Little Rock Central High School, been
and presently serve as members of the Little Rock City Board of Directors, were
administrators of the Anti-Poverty Program and the Little Rock Housing Authority,
been a deputy sheriff for Pulaski County, Arkansas, been Vice Mayor and Mayor of the
City of Little Rock, been a psychiatric nurse, been an educator and given so much to
civic interests. Perhaps the personal statement of Annie Abrams is the sentiment that

Lift every voice and sing, till earth and Heaven ring, Ring with the harmonies of liberty;
Let our rejoicing rise, high as the listening skies, Let it resound loud as the rolling sea.
Sing a song full of the faith that the dark past has taught us, Sing a song full of the hope that the present has brought us;
Facing the rising sun of our new day begun, Let us march on till victory is won.
Stony the road we trod, bitter the chastening rod,
Felt in the days when hope unborn had died; Yet with a steady beat, have not our weary feet, Come to the place for which our fathers sighed?
We have come over a way that with tears has been watered, We have come, treading our path through the blood of the slaughtered;
Out from the gloomy past, till now we stand at last Where the white gleam of our bright star is cast. God of our weary years, God of our silent tears, Thou Who hast brought us thus far on the way;
Thou Who hast by Thy might, led us into the light, Keep us forever in the path, we pray.
Lest our feet stray from the places, our God, where we met Thee. Lest our hearts, drunk with the wine of the world, we forget Thee.
Shadowed beneath Thy hand, may we forever stand, True to our God, true to our native land.
