Past student to help present students…

• In your pairs you will now look at a past students work and identify where they have used the media key concepts (F.A.I.R) to explain how their artiste, Rihanna is represented and promoted.

• Annotate on the worksheet.

Page 17: ASSIGNMENT 2 Cross-Media Study

An orange flower connotes femininity, which could represent Rihanna’s character to her audience. Female audiences might identify with her or aspire to be like her.

Logo is in black and the typography is sharp connoting that she could have a dangerous side to her personality. This contradicts the flower which creates enigmas for her audience about her character.

Her body language is represented as shy and closed but her clothes are sexy and skimpy. This is another contradiction creating more enigmas about her personality.

Scrolling arrows lead the audience to More pages and styles of RihannaShowing the audience that she is not A stereotype and can be represented in many ways.

Pictures and links to different merchandise endorsed by Rihanna allows fans participate and buy her products.

News and information are USPs to entice fans to read up on Rihanna. It also promotes her on other platforms as there are links to news articles.

Menu tab at the top shows different pages where fans can navigate the website.

Logo is recognisable and identifiable to her fans. It is also a USP as it promotes her album which has the same logo on it.

Where are you at?1. By now you should have all finished your script analysis and put it

on your blogs with the video link.

2. You should have started a second analysis from another media platform (either a website or poster/album cover). Continue with this work but make sure you are using the media key concepts (F.A.I.R)

3. If you have finished the second analysis, you should pick a third promotional text from a different media platform to the other two. (either your band or artistes website or poster/album cover)

4. You should use the key concepts template to support your work and you may use the internet to source your third media text to analyse but only once you have finished the second. You may also use the past students example as a guide.

Starting your 1000 word essay

• Exploring the way Rihanna is represented and promoted across the media platforms

Page 22: ASSIGNMENT 2 Cross-Media Study

Here is an essay plan that you can use to help structure your writing:

Introduction:Briefly introduce the artist you are studying. Who are they and what are they famous for?… briefly outline the different media platforms that they use e.g. print, TV, music video, radio, social media (YouTube, twitter, Facebook etc) and explain why these are important in promoting them cross-media.

FormsConsider how different codes and conventions are used across the media to promote your artist. Consider the use pictures in the print/web text you are looking at. What sort of TV appearances have they made and how do they help promote your artiste – talk about the interview but also any other broadcast texts they appear in.

AudienceHow are different audiences targeted through the cross media coverage? Which segment of the audience are targeted through the web and online and how is this different to print and TV or music video? Do different texts have different modes of address? Why is this important? How might audiences respond differently to different texts over different platforms?

InstitutionWhat is it that sells your artiste to their respective target audience? What are the USPs within the texts you have looked at and how does this play a part in the cross promotion of your artiste? Are they teaming up with any other media products to create synergy? If so, how? Are there any regulations and controls on any of the texts you have looked at? How does this tie in with your essay title?

RepresentationHow is the artist you have chosen represented differently across different media platforms? Is the representation stereotypical or does it challenge stereotypes? Is it different across different texts and platforms? Are representations of your artist different on mainstream TV compared to more niche specialist magazines, music channels and online. How does the branding of your artist stay consistent across all the different media platforms, what representations change and what stays the same? Does there personal life play a part in the representation and promotion of this artiste? If so, how?

ConclusionWrite a concluding paragraph explaining the importance of the platforms in promoting your artiste cross-media.

Managing your own artiste!

• Come up with your own artiste or band that you can promote across different platforms.

• On your blogs come up with their name, genre and places they would be promoted.

• Think about their audience and how your artiste will reach them.

• Use real media examples of where they will appear – teen magazines like ‘Bliss’ or TV chat shows like ‘Graham Norton’.
