ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

It’s hard to believe that we are only at the end of week three of term four as it has been such a busy time here at Mullauna College. The dismantling of the Art Show week two and set up of the Performing Arts Centre for the music Showcase Concert was a sight to behold as the turnaround happened in such a short period of time.

Showcase Concert The annual end of year Showcase Concert last week once again, put on show the range of amazing talents of our students. It was an enjoyable and emotional evening of music with the acknowledgement of our senior students, for whom it was their last Mullauna concert.

2018 Year 7 Welcome Night On Monday this week we held our Year 7 Welcome Evening for the new parents and students joining us in 2018. Parents heard from Brett Arandall, our School Council President, on life at Mullauna from a parent perspective; from our Principal, Barbara Laidlaw and from our School Captains who talked about the many aspects of school and the highlights of their time at Mullauna College. Jeff McMillin, Amanda Hayward, Michael Sword and Margaret Graham also shared information and fielded lots of questions. Thank you to all staff who attended, ensuring that this was a valuable and welcoming experience for the new families to our Mullauna Community.

School Jumper Survey Thank you for your timely feedback to our online survey regarding a proposed change in the Mullauna College jumper. Your feedback was discussed at School Council at our meeting on Tuesday 17 October with the decision being to remain with the current school policy which was 'Option 2' in the survey - Years 7 -10 royal blue jumper and years 11 and 12 black jumper with 'VCE' embroidered beneath the college logo.

Friends of Music – Bunnings BBQ Fundraiser After a very long time on the waiting list (approx 2 years) we have been offered a date to run a BUNNINGS 'Sausage Sizzle' to raise funds for 'Friends of Music'. Money raised will go towards paying for our fabulous new stage in the Performing Arts Centre. We will really need the support of the school community to be able to do this as the requirements set by Bunnings are that we operated for the full day.

BBQ Date and Times: Saturday 11 November - 8:00 AM till 4:30 PM Venue: Bunnings Nunawading

If you could spare an hour of your time on either day to support us it would be greatly appreciated.

MUSICAL NOTES

Mullauna Showcase Concert

The Showcase Concert was held on 19 October and the focus was to farewell the 17 year 12 musicians who have been members of the music program for up to 6 years.

The year 12s opened the night with a cover of the song, ’‘I’ll be there for you’ which is the theme song from the TV show Friends. We were each awarded with a commemorative trophy as a thanks for our years of dedication. Each of the ensembles and bands also performed throughout the evening to showcase a year of hard work and practice. We also had appearances from some students who don’t usually get the chance to perform. Hope Beale (year 12) and her brother Ryan (year 7) performed a saxophone duet of one of their favourite Harry Potter songs, and year 12 voice student Claudia Giankos sang, ‘The Climb’ by Miley Cyrus. Claudia received a standing ovation and brought the audience to tears. On a more upbeat note, other songs like ‘Castle on a Hill’ by Ed Sheeran and ‘Crazy Little Thing Called Love’ by Queen were performed by Voice Connection; and ‘I’m a believer’ was performed by rock group, Reborn Rebellion. After the interval it was time for the 3 large concerts bands to perform and demonstrate an amazing level of progress this year. The night ended with the Concert Band and Wind Symphony combining for a presentation of ‘The Great Locomotive Chase’.

On behalf of all the year 12s I would like to thank the music staff for taking care of us for the past 6 years and treating us like a small family. We have all made so many memories; been given so many opportunities and were all glad to see that Mrs Newstead managed to hold back her tears during our last concert. Thank you to all the staff, students and parents who made this wonderful night possible.

YEAR 10 TRIP TO AIE On Friday 20 October the Year 10 students embarked on an Information Technology excursion to the AIE (Academy of Interactive Entertainment). We met at Southern Cross Station at 9:00am and walked to the third floor of the World Trade Center, the AIE office. We were introduced to our teacher Jesse, who was going to show us how to use the animation software MAYA. Jesse spoke to us on the background of AIE, the courses they offer and gave us a brief history of the Australian gaming companies and all the games they have made; which none of us had a clue about. We were amazed when we found out that the all-time favorite game CROSSY ROAD is made in Australia. We also learned that a major partnership was formed with an international famous company, Disney and together they made a Disney version of Crossy Road. Jesse then gave us instructions on how to use Maya and we all had to make a rook (chess piece). After that we had to make a book shelf to actually place the rook in. When we had finished making the bookshelf we also learnt how to put lighting in it which created shadows on the shelf. It was a great experience to be there because we all play games, and thanks to AIE we now know how games are made and all the effort behind making a game. We all had a great time and also learnt how to do 3D modelling!

EMR ATHLETICS

On 13 October Mullauna College was represented at the Eastern Metropolitan Region Athletics by 22 students. Competing in a range of events there were numerous students who stood on the podium collecting a medal for their win or place. It was a pleasure taking the students out for the day, as once again everyone showed great sportsmanship. A great day was had by all, as was clear by the students’ participation, or their efforts cheering on their peers.

We made it to Eastern Metropolitan Region table tennis after an amazing job from the Year 7 girls table tennis team last term. On Friday, 20 October, Sophie, Laura, Varisha and Keely played against the other winning schools for the next level of competition, and there were a few nail biting games. We missed out on the finals by 1 point, but played skillfully and competitively all day. The girls are looking forward to a re-match in Year 8!

MULLAUNA DEBATING

Congratulations to the Debaters

On Wednesday 25 October, our Year 9 DAV debaters - Briget Ewert, Krish Thacker and Max Webb, supported by

Sharon Song - triumphed in the annual Victoria Shield for Excellence in Debating. State Member for Ringwood, Dee

Ryall MP, warmly welcomed this year’s debating teams from Mullauna College, Ringwood Secondary College and

Norwood Secondary College. During the first round, each of the teams debated one of two topical issues in the

Legislative Assembly of the Victorian Parliament:

"That we should lower the driving age to 16 for individuals living outside of Melbourne"

"That employers should not be able to hire or fire based on information found on social media"

Mullauna argued the affirmative side of the latter topic defeating Norwood Secondary College to move into the final

round. Briget Ewert was declared the best speaker in what the adjudicator said was a very impressive debate.

In the final, our debaters took the negative stance on the topic "That Medicare should fund cosmetic surgery". Max

Webb was declared best speaker. Mullauna College finished the day victorious taking home the shield for the sixth

year in a row. Ms Ryall congratulated Mullauna and noted its dominance of the competition. “Well done Mullauna –

yet again taking out the trophy. The pressure’s on next year to keep up your fine tradition,” Ms Ryall said.

I would like to acknowledge Mr Howell for providing his support, and for accompanying the team to Parliament

House.

Congratulations – a tremendous effort!

MULLAUNA INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS

Good Bye to Sen TAN Sam has now completed year 12 and has been participating with vigour in all the year 12 celebrations. Sen indicated his experience at Mullauna College has been great. He now feels sad that his time at Mullauna College is coming to an end……..I will miss the caring atmosphere of the teachers and the friends I have made.

When asked was his experience as an international student as he had expected it to be before he came to Australia Sam responded, “Yes”. Sam did make the point that he appreciated how the teachers took into account his EAL requirements and made a big effort to assist him in his studies.

At the end of his examinations Sen will return to China for a break of two months. When he arrives back in Melbourne next year he is hoping to take up further studies in a tertiary institution studying either design or engineering. Mullauna College wishes Sam the best of luck as he treads a new path into his future.

Where do our International Students Come From?

Our students come from Myanmar, Cambodia, Taiwan, Vietnam and Philippines with China representing the largest cohort. Miguel from Philippines and Lucy from China are shown identifying their home on the map of Asia in the International Students’ Common Room.

Where do some of our International students live?

Homestays are offered to many of our international students. These are families in our area who open their homes to our students and provide full board accommodation. This experience is an excellent way for students to improve their English, learn more about the Australian culture and to make the most of their international education experience. Sandra is a homestay mother. On a recent site visit she shared her meal of homemade dumplings with me. Puer Tea Xinhua was also offered. The tea has been stored in fleshed out mandarins for up to 7 years.

MULLAUNA GERMAN EXCHANGE

On Friday 15 September, three Mullauna College

students, along with staff and students from Vermont

SC and Heathmont SC, started their four week

exchange tour to Germany! Keishin Hagihara, Luke

Stevens and Hayley Rule visited Kaufungen (the host

town), Nürnberg, Rothenburg, Erfurt, Kassel, Berlin

and Heidelberg.

“This exchange gave us many new experiences, for some it was the

first time experiencing jet-lag! Still, we were all excited to be in

Germany. We spent the first day relaxing around Kaufungen with our

host families. During the exchange, we visited many large German

towns and cities, the biggest being Berlin. During the exchange, it was

great that I could meet many German people and visit schools there.

The weekends were the only days I was away from my Australian

group, and my German exchange partners took me to many interesting places. They organised many weekend

activities with other Australians for us. My favourite weekend involved going to a Bundesliga 1 match with my

friend, and to a large theme park the next day. Another great thing about Germany was the food. We were

always trying out German flavours, and many of us bought lots of pretzels during our trips. The German

exchange was a great experience for me and I would recommend it to anyone who is interested.”

Keishin Hagihara

“From the 15 September to 12 October, I was given the opportunity to go

to Kaufungen, Germany on exchange. It was an amazing experience to

see all the differences between Australia and Germany. I also got to go

and see many different towns and cities in Germany including Berlin and

Heidelberg. I enjoyed learning more about the history of Germany during

World War 2 and before the war. My highlights of the trip were having an

amazing host family, eating all the yummy food and seeing all of the

amazing sights in Germany. My German classes helped me with

understanding and speaking German. I wish to go back to Germany one

day in the future.”

MULLAUNA GERMAN EXCHANGE continued

“Travelling to Germany was an experience I’ll never forget. When I first arrived in Germany I was very nervous

as I only knew two other people on the exchange trip. It was a wonderful opportunity to make new friends with

whom I now share some funny memories. I personally recommend Germany’s delicious bratwursts. Germany is

well known for their beer and my expectations of the German culture were met. The soccer in Germany was

much better than in Australia as the atmosphere was extraordinary. We travelled to many cities like Erfurt,

Berlin, Nuremburg, Rothenberg and Heidelberg and this was a highlight for me; I appreciated all the history. It

was great to be immersed in the German culture and practise the language. Visiting Germany was a sensational

experience and one of the best times of my life.”

An important point of the program last week was a guided tour of Oberkaufungen village with Reinhold Orth as well as a visit to the museum Alte Schule (Old School), where Heidi Noll explained how the museum documents the history of the town from the Middle Ages until the present day. The students were also welcomed by Mayor Arnim Ross, who stressed the importance of cultural exchanges between countries and continents as a basis for peaceful coexistence - especially in the present time.
