Share-A-Pet ProgramAboutThe Share-A-Pet Program was established in February 1978 to save the livesof a number of dogs and cats who were in special need of a “New Leash onLife.” They are selected by Society staff from among those at our three shel-ters whom we consider unadoptable due to age, handicap, medical prob-lems, abuse, length of stay, etc.The program is designed for animal lovers who would like to help contributetowards the care of a specific homeless cat or dog through a monthly do-nation. Any of these animals are always available to good homes. All animals sponsored under this program are neutered, and sent to the An-imal Haven Farm or Kitty City. We guarantee that all dogs and cats are fullyinoculated, and receive all necessary medical care, as well as proper routine, daily care.

Sponsor Share-A-Pets Online! You can also sponsor your Share-A-Pet online, where you willreceive your updates right in your inbox, thus saving the Soci-ety much-needed funds in printing and postage. You will re-ceive a letter and quality 4 x 6” jpg photo that you can printout. Log on to: www.ahscares.org and click on Share-A-Pet Pro-gram on the right navigation and you’ll find all the animals andtheir stories waiting for you!

How It WorksYou may support a Share-A-Pet through a monthly sponsorship of$10.00. All donors in the program will receive a color photo of eachdog or cat they are sponsoring and a letter telling them about thehealth and activities of the animal every four months plus a free sub-scription to the Society’s publication, the HUMANE NEWS. All spon-sors will receive a Share-A-Pet membership card, which entitles youto free admission to Popcorn Park, and six self-addressed envelopesto make your monthly donations. As a member of the Share-A-Petprogram you may sponsor your chosen pet for as long as you wantwith no contracts or obligations. We only ask that you advise us ifyou no longer wish to do so, so we may update our records. Any ex-cess funds in this program are applied to the care and welfare of allanimals. You are also invited to come and visit your Share-A-Pet, take him forwalks, bring her treats, and ... even adopt him or her. Should the cator dog you sponsor be adopted or pass away, (keep in mind thatmany of the animals placed on the Share-A-Pet program are elderly, handicapped, have medical problems, etc.), you will be advised andoffered another Share-A-Pet for sponsorship.

Jugs the Pug of LawrencevilleI just can’t help myself - I get carried away! If others come close to you,I’m afraid they must pay. And so I was adopted and soon after returned;my overprotective love was spurned. A dog that loves too much? I’mguilty as charged; but here on The Farm, I’m living large. Once was a time, chivalry was prized; if you sponsor me, you’ll be a hero in my eyes.

Misty of NewarkI fell out the window, five long stories down; my owner brought me tothe Medical Department, then couldn’t be found. It took awhile, but Ifinally healed; I’m not quite symmetrical, but on an even keel. A morecaring home is where I’d like to be; if you are that purr-son, then pleaseask for me. Meanwhile, I’m happy with loving staff and friends; sponsorand visit if you have time to spend!

Clarissa of East OrangeMy 3 tiny babies were so very ill; they had no strength and went down-hill. I had milk, but no young to feed, so they gave me some motherlesskittens in need. A second batch followed and I saved them, too; it sim-ply is what a loving mother must do. In thanks, they brought me to KittyCity, so secure; now my home is here, but it still could be yours.

Chip and Noel of South CarolinaWhen domestic violence becomes an issue in a home, the pets are in danger of, or may be, being abused aswell. Chip and Noel were 2 of 4 dogs belonging to awoman in this situation. While the husband was brieflyincarcerated, the wife entered a safe-house, but theywould not accept Chip and Noel due to their size --only the 2 small dogs. A local rescue took the pair, butwere not able to keep them longterm. We opened ourdoors to Chip and Noel in 2008, when they were 11and 8 years old, and gave them spots on the AnimalHaven Farm, where they at least had each other forcomfort. They would love your support, or even yourhome, but they will always stay together.

Sammie of NewarkI was found as a stray, July 2009. At first it seemed that everything wasfine. Then they noticed me snapping at things no one could see; andsoon it was determined to be involuntary. Not a serious problem, norreally well understood; all they wanted was that I should feel really good.It was discovered that when I’m with dogs I’m quite calm; so it’s just nat-ural I’m happy here on the Farm. But I sure would love sme sponsors!

ButchThe other cat and I had an onging dispute; our ownerfound fur flying not very cute. For sanity’s sake a deci-sion was made; I was the one asked to leave, I’m afraid. In Kitty City you'll find me when you enter the room;just listen for a purr that's as loud as a raccoon! There are times when two animals, no matter how lov-ing with their human friends, just will not be friendswith each other. It's not that Butch is a "bad" cat -- infact, he gets along with all the others in Kitty City! He’sjust a big sweetheart who needs your love. Please openyour home or share your heart and sponsor sweetButch.

Spike of Goshen, NYI have a tough name, but a very soft heart. It was my owner’s illness thatcaused us to part. It wasn’t his fault that things went awry, and he in-sured that his dogs had a safe place to abide. On the Farm I have friendsand a great time; yet a home with a BEST friend would still be sublime.Look in my eyes where hope always dwells; sponsor me, walk me, or ...adopt me and help me bid my farewells.

Page 5

Barley of FairfieldOf thirty cats abandoned in a home, only five of us survived. Three moredied; only Oats and I remained alive. After awhile Oats also passed; of somany friends, I now was the last. I was offered Kitty City to help me for-get my distress; toys, a soft bed and a gentle caress. After so much sad-ness, it’s no surprise I was shy; but with a little time, I’m as easy as pie.Won’t you sponsor me and be my new pal? Come visit ... get to know me... at my Kitty City locale.

Biscuit of NYCSeptember 11, 2001 was a fateful day for this country and also for thisdog. He was spotted at the rubble of the Twin Towers, searching for anowner who had disappeared. Firemen repeatedly ushered the loyal dogaway from the scene, but he insisted on returning to search. A kind con-struction worker from NJ took the dog home, hoping to provide himsolace, and named him Biscuit. However, he soon realized that he wasunable to keep him due to long work hours. When he contacted the So-ciety about Biscuit, we offered him the Animal Haven Farm immediately.Could you love and sponsor a dog who once lost everything in his worldhe held dear, but has never given up on love?

Evita of ArgentinaIt was a very long trip across the sea; how I got in a sealed container is stilla mystery to me. But when I arrived I was beyond just thin; I was dehy-drated and ill, a poor state to be in. They thought I was wild when theyfirst handled me; but the stress from the journey made me long to befree. With food and water and staff ’s loving touch, I became a girl wholoved very much. Argentina’s my birthplace, but I love the USA; yoursponsoring me would make my day.

CasperOur blue-eyed beauty yearns for a special place; inside your heart she’dlike a little space. She loves her kitty friends and bathing in sunlight; chas-ing catnip mice, stalking shadows at night. But what gets her motor torumbling out loud? The human who comes walking through the felinecrowd. So come and make friends and offer your lap; one touch and herheart is yours in a snap.

Darby the Deaf DobermanFound wandering in the woods, this very sweet Dober-man may have been abandoned or simply escaped, butno one came to claim her. An examination discoveredthat she was both deaf and neurologically impaired. Al-though she was adopted out for a period of time, hermultiple problems were too difficult for the owner tocope with, and Darby returned. One of the sweetestdogs on the Animal Haven Farm, she has the affectionof other dogs and staff, and loves to meet people whoaccept her handicaps and see her heart. Will you beone of those special people and sponsor Darby?

Peanut of Ocean GroveI made them sneeze, so they turned in their little chap; they had allergiesnor would I stay on their lap! Not every kitty wants to hang out andsnooze; there’s an awful lot to check out in the Busy Cat News. I’m stillindependent, but I’d be happy to train you; come down and visit, classesstart at two. Laps are still not my favorite place, but for a llittle love? youget my best please-sponsor-me-face.

Sybil of NewarkI have a plan to take over the world ... one Society stafferand their pets at a time. When just a teenager, I wascruelly left in a box wrapped in plastic on the shelter’sdoorstep one night, (verified by their video cameras!)But now, I must make the world safe for all other aban-doned cats! I POUNCE on unsuspecting staff whenthey go by, and LEAP onto their dogs in the hall. Soonit will be just me and other cats in need. Bwah, ha, ha!But wait ... that sounds kind of lonely! With some lov-ing sponsors, perhaps I would see the world aright.Could you help me see things a little more clearly andsponsor me? There’s still time!

Cid of NewarkWhen I arrived at the shelter I was grimy and thin; lonely and forlornwas the state I was in. But my future looked up when John Bergmannhappened by; I don’t know the reason, but I caught his eye. I travelled toForked River under the General Manager’s wing; and soon had the bestof everything. Sparx is my friend but could I call you mine? If you don’tmind that I’m deaf, we’ll get along just fine!

Page 7

Popeye of ArkansasI was rescued from a Class B dealer -- a terrible place -- where crueltyand neglect were always the case. Our rescuers took all the survivorsfrom this kennel of pain; the operator was finally shut down with nomore dirty money to gain. I was named Popeye before I came here, as Isaid ‘yuk, yuk, yuk’ when touched anywhere. With 13 other survivors, Icame to this state; all but me found a home -- I’m still waiting for mybig date. And although all that happened back in 2005, I still hope forlove ... my heart’s still alive.

Page 8: AssociatedHumaneSocieties/PopcornPark Share-a-PetProgram · land in Tinton Falls. In 1999, a half million-dollar renovation added more spacious and modern cat facilities, a second

Mesha of NewarkOur owner was heartbroken to turn in Raja and me; we were his life, buthe’d lost his property. After one year of staff hoping for the best, wewere brought to the Farm for some fresh air and rest. I was 12 when Icame down in 2008, and with my best buddy, Raja, life sure has beengreat. I hope you have some love for us small senior guys; your spon-soring me would be my heart’s prize.

Amber of UnionI was only 3 when the SPCA interceded; some immediate help was surelyneeded. I was kept tied out in the broiling sun; water, food, shelter - therewas none. When I was rescued, they checked all over my skin; it was a ter-rible place that I’d been in. Bite wounds and what looked like cigaretteburns; caustic material scars I’d done nothing to earn. I was sickly andthin when the owner finally signed me over, but at last I’ve found myfour-leaf clover. Always safe and always cared for; your heart or yourhome ... and I’m loved evermore. Please sponsor me!

Raja of NewarkIt was May 2008, when my owner got evicted; it was nothing Mesha orI could have predicted. He was so sad when he had to turn us in; weknow he loved us, but his life had worn thin. The Society waited oneyear, hoping he could come take us back, but it seems his life was still inlack. I was ten, when we were brought down to Animal Haven Farm to-gether, where we continue to play in all kinds of weather. Sponsor me,Raja, and you sponsor a “king;” but really, I’m just me ... grateful for everylittle thing.

Goldie of NewarkQuite some time ago, I had a mom named Yvette. Shewas Society staff and the best mommy yet. When shepassed away, Snowy and I felt awfully alone; and whenHE passed, I really needed a special home. I was soupset, so they said ‘How about Kitty City?’ I jumped atthe chance, and so I write this ditty. I would still love ahome, but your heart would do fine; just knowing thatsomeone special would still be mine.

Hank of TennesseeTen may be Hank’s lucky ... or unlucky ... number. He wasone of ten dogs from Tennessee whose lives we saved.Hank was ten when we rescued them in 2009. Now it’s2010, and Hank is still here, the only one of the groupthat never found a home. Hank is one sweet guy, ahound that simply loves to be loved. It’s not too late toremind Hank of how special he is by adopting him, orperhaps you could be his sponsor, and come down andgive him some cuddles? Well, he’d be right happy aboutthat, too!

Page 9

Jaws of WeehawkenLuckily, Jaws was rescued in time. He suffered brutal beatings from hisowner who trained him by bludgeoning him about the head and face.A tenant in the building had once observed this, but when he cameupon the dog in the building basement, swollen and infected, he calledthe police, who then called us. Despite two fractures to the head andtwo broken teeth, Jaws showed only happiness at the attention paidhim by medical staff. It has also been discovered that Jaws is very hard ofhearing - we don’t know if this was caused by the beatings he received,or if he couldn’t hear the man's commands, and was beaten because hedidn’t respond. What we DO know, is that for all Jaws has gone through,he deserves loving sponsors. Could that be you?

Amayha of NewarkAmayha has a questsion in her luminous green eyes; could you be thepurr-son she could idolize? It wouldn’t take much ... a bit of pamperingand affection; her heart is yearning to make a connection. Once was thetime, when motherless kittens were in need, Amayha nursed them all,and gave them life, indeed. Now she wonders, is it my turn yet? Certainly, your love will be as good as it gets!

Eat `N SleepIt was 2006 when I arrived, a kitten needing bottle-feeding, happy to bealive. I would love a home, of that there’s no doubt; but no one seemsto want a lounge-about. You see, my life is of the 2-dimensional variety-- I eat and I sleep, that’s my big claim to notoriety. That and the fact thatI am unbelievably calm. I hang out in rthe front office where there’s a lotgoing on. Would you like to give my life a 3rd dimension? Sponsor oradopt me and give me affection!

Page 10: AssociatedHumaneSocieties/PopcornPark Share-a-PetProgram · land in Tinton Falls. In 1999, a half million-dollar renovation added more spacious and modern cat facilities, a second

Pep of South Toms RiverI remember the date - November 2005; so thankful I was rescued, sohappy to be alive. A neglect and abuse victim of someone who didn’tcare; that person shouldn’t have been allowed to have me there. Butonce all fixed up, I began my wait; each day I looked hopefully at everyvisiting face. Will it be me? Will today be MY day? So far no one’s invitedme to stay. Will it be you? Will today be OUR day? I’m closing my eyesand wishing ... won’t you please invite me to stay?

Rocky & Jezebel of WaretownThis gorgeous pair was adopted from the Society, but when their ownerbecame terminally ill, he was no longer able to keep them. With a heavyheart, he returned his dogs with a small bequest so their lives would besecure on the Animal Haven Farm. That was over 3 years ago, and theduo still waits for love. It’s now 2010, and Jezebel, at left, is 5 years old, andRocky, right, is 7. Loved together then, they need to be loved togethernow ... do you have some extra space in your home or heart?

Linda Blair of NewarkRemember "The Exorcist"? Regan needed a priest. What I need is love at the very least. I am not possessed, nor does the devil reside within; my body does oddthings, but it's not related to sin. I was dropped off atthe Newark facility's door; since I'd been loved, I felt re-ally poor. A stiff rear leg and broken heart were discov-ered, but more than these; they found my head canrotate nearly 360 degrees! So staff decided to name meLinda Blair; You could rename me, just so’s you prom-ise to care.

Page 10

Nala of BarnegatI was adopted, but at the tender age of 12, I was returned. Too interestedin the cats they said, and do I feel burned. My senior years, and from myhome I was banished; Was there nothing to work out? Did their lovejust vanish? In 2010, I’m now thirteen; as energetic as I’ve ever been. I’msmall in size, a Schipperke mix; I sure could use a lovng sponsorhip fix!

Page 11: AssociatedHumaneSocieties/PopcornPark Share-a-PetProgram · land in Tinton Falls. In 1999, a half million-dollar renovation added more spacious and modern cat facilities, a second

Dutchess of HowellI arrived in 2007 with Duke, my best friend; life as we knew it had cometo an end. Our owner was no longer able to care for us two, so wepacked our bags and started anew. I may be gray in the muzzle, but in myheart, I’m still a pup. Won’t you bring your love down and fill my heartup? We can while away the time, get in a snuggle or two; I ‘d love toshare life’s simple joys with you

Mild-Mannered MaggieGiven up at 8 months old because her personality wastoo mild, Maggie may be older, but still can beguile. Be-neath what some see as an intimidating look, is a sweetgirl who reads like an open book. Our mild-manneredMaggie with her ebony coat still waits to set sail in yourloveboat. Ahoy there, matey, wont you bring her onboard? Your love will assure her heart’s lonely no more.

Duke of HowellI still remember back to that day; life really changed in an unexpectedway. It was May 2007, I was seven and a half years; they said I was shy, butI felt many fears. What would happen to my best friend, Dutchess, andme? In our home, we were treated like royalty. Our names tell the storyof how we were thought of, and thanks to you, we’ve again known love. Please be my sponsor -- your caring means so much; a visit, some treatsand a gentle touch.

Page 11

Phoenix of IrvingtonPhoenix is a girl who has truly risen from the ashes. Rescued from a burn-ing building in Irvington, NJ in 2008, she was found in the fire amidst 3people shot to death and another fatally wounded. Despite the horri-fying circumstances, someone there had loved the soot-covered, ro-tund kitty that was in desperate need of help. We estimated her to beabout 10 years old at the time, and she still longs for love. She is not fondof other cats, so shares the office with a Society staffer, staying nearbyand tapping her on the arm when she’d like a little affection. We’d like totap you on the arm, too, hoping you might share your love and spon-sor Phoenix.

Page 12: AssociatedHumaneSocieties/PopcornPark Share-a-PetProgram · land in Tinton Falls. In 1999, a half million-dollar renovation added more spacious and modern cat facilities, a second

Rudy of OrangeAs I am totally blind and cannot see, won’t you light the way for me?Once I suffered, starved and forgotten; open sores, food that was rotten. Not one drop of water was to be found; debris scattered all about theground. Locked in a pen, I could not get free; I thought it would all be thedeath of me. Through luck I was rescued from my prison of doom; caredfor and healed and lovingly groomed. There is plenty to eat and peoplewho care, now all I need are some hearts to share. I don’t have vision, but hearts I can see; please let your love light the way for me.

Dutchess of Irvington“Just don’t want them anymore,” is what he said. After 6 years of loyalty, our hearts felt dead. Missy and I had done our best to be man’s bestfriend, but it only came to an ugly end. Luckily, folks here sympathizedwith our plight, and soon they had made things wonderfully right. As aShare-A-Pet, I’m hoping you’ll sponsor me, and for a bonus, you canwalk me AND Missy!

Missy of IrvingtonOf all the days you could break our hearts, Valentine’s Day is the placeto start. My BFF Dutchess and I were both six at the time, and this willbe one pitiful rhyme. Why didn’t our owner want us around? Maybe hishouse had burned to the ground? Or maybe he was ill beyond cure?Nope, he just didn’t want us any more. My heart was broken on the14th of February; but your love could once again make my life merry.

Page 12

Zephyr of NewarkMy rescue's heroic - there's no arguing there; my life wasdangling by no more than a hair. Some mean city kidsheld me high just to tease some dogs so close I couldcount their fleas. I was yanked around while the dogsgrabed for me; when a Society staffer came by and de-manded I go free. At first they said `no', and he got realmad; so he forcefully snatched me away from the lad.He didn't care about anything they would say, hewrapped me in his arms and walked away.Ever since I’ve waited and wondered, too ... would I beloved in your home or your heart by you? I’m tossingthat out and hoping to hear ... all I want is to be helddear.

Page 13: AssociatedHumaneSocieties/PopcornPark Share-a-PetProgram · land in Tinton Falls. In 1999, a half million-dollar renovation added more spacious and modern cat facilities, a second

Buddy of Lacey TownshipI sat right there in the middle of the road; an older gentleman carryinga heavy load. I had no home, I felt sick as could be ... was there no onewho would care for me? I was 2 miles up from Popcorn Park, when twoboys came along, both with big hearts. With a belt as a leash, theywalked me in the front door, where staff signed me in and I worried nomore. When they did an exam, they found tumors filled with cancer; if“will I live?” was the question, “we’ll remove them” was the answer. Inmuch better health, I was adopted out, but I panicked indoors and soondid a turn-about. So who wants a dog who may have never lived in-side? At eleven or twelve years old, the odds are on a downhill slide. ButI know one place where I’d fit like a glove ... and that’s in your heart whereI’d bask in your love.

Sparx of BarnegatMy life has been one revolving door; all I want is simplyto be adored! Found as a stray, then adopted out; theinsurance company gave the owner a shout. “Get rid ofthat dog or you won’t be insured;” and back I camethrough the revolving door. Then he changed compa-nies and declared his devotion was true; I had my fam-ily back and affection, too. But then came the baby andyou know for sure, once more I was back in that re-volving door. “That’s it!” said the Society. “You’re stay-ing right here - on Share-A-Pet, where everything’s clear.”Love forever is what would make things right - yourhome? your heart? Let me be the Sparx to ignite.
