Getting the Distance... Spoken Fur has been unbeatable since breaking hermaiden by 6 1/4 lengths at Keeneland in April. Shereturned to take back to back-to-back allowance races

at Churchill for trainer AustinSmith, then shipped toBelmont for the June 28 GIMother Goose S. “They senther to me from Kentucky totrain, but I knew she was forsale, too,” Frankel said. “Ineeded a nice three-year-oldfilly.” Purchased by Frankel’sclient Amerman Racing Sta-bles LLC, the Florida-bredmade her debut under newsilks in the Mother Goose and

ran her winning streak to four in a row. Spoken Fur wastrying a mile and a half for the first--and likely only--time in her career yesterday, but the result was nearlyidentical. Allowed to settle off a solid early pace, sheswept past the field on the far turn, opened up eightlengths at midstretch and needed no more than a handride to hold Fircroft (A.P. Indy) safe to the wire. “I wassurprised how fast they were going early,” winningjockey Jerry Bailey said. “I figured no one would beanxious for the lead, considering no one really wantedto go a mile and a half. I was very confident down thebackstretch with the fast pace. You don’t see too manyhorses accelerate like she did in a mile-and-a-half race. She put the race away at the quarter pole. She’s verygood.” The runner-up, last early, finished well, but wassecond best. “Overall, this was a good effort,” trainerRusty Arnold said. “We’ll take a look at the Alabama.”

A Trip Too Far... Yell (A.P. Indy), the second choice at 3-2, pressedthe pace and took the lead after a mile, but weakenedlate to be fourth. The early leaders, longshots Shapesand Shadows (Dynaformer) and Skipamiss (Skip Away),tired badly and were both eased in the stretch.

Hemoved up a class to finish third in the G2 Prix Jean deChaudenay at Saint-Cloud May 21, went one placebetter in the G2 Grand Prix de Chantilly June 8 andsecured his most important win to date with this domi-nant stretch display. Leading jockey ChristopheSoumillon maintained a stalking position in secondaboard the grey, behind British raider Zindabad (Fr)(Shirley Heights {GB}), until pushing his mount to thefront at the quarter-mile marker. The result was neverin doubt from there as Martaline exhibited an abun-dance of stamina in the closing stages to easily hold thelate rally of Westerner. Perfect Drift, who handed divisional leader Mineshafta head defeat in the June 14 GI Stephen Foster H.,drew off smartly to post his third win in four starts thisyear. Third in last year’s GI Kentucky Derby, the baywas freshened up following a 10th in the GI Belmont S.and returned to win the GIII Indiana Derby in Oct. 8.However, he ended the year with a 12th in the GIBreeders’ Cup Classic and went back on vacation.Trainer Murray Johnson opted to bring the gelding backon the turf and Perfect Drift duly responded with anallowance win at Keeneland Apr. 11, then ran a re-spectable fourth in the GI Woodford Reserve Turf Clas-sic on Derby Day. But it was back to the dirt for PerfectDrift in the $750,000 Stephen Foster, and he came upwith a big effort in outbattling Mineshaft for a narrowvictory, which made him the odds-on choice againstthese lesser foes. Never far from the front, Perfect Driftmoved into contention on the far turn and entered thestretch with a narrow lead and his ears up. Aeneasmoved to his hip, but the favorite had all the answersas he opened up on his rivals with a furlong to run.“We were breathing down the leader’s throat aroundthe turn in hand,” said winning rider Pat Day. “When[Aeneas] mounted a challenge on the outside, Ismooched a little. He had his ears pricked and was stillwell within himself.” Perfect Drift’s next start will comeat Arlington, but under different circumstances. “TheArlington Million [GI, Aug. 16] has been one of ourgoals,” said Johnson. “[Dynaformer] is a versatile sireand affords us the chance to use different races to gethim where we want.” Click for the brisnet.com chart orthe free brisnet.com catalogue-style pedigree.

The start of the race was marred by a bizarre inci-dent, as jockey Javier Castellano was forced to get offthe fractious Cherokee Lite (Cherokee Run) in the start-ing gate, then was unable to get back into the saddlebefore the latch was sprung. The Nick Zito-trainedrunner was declared a non-starter. Without the speedyCherokee Lite to contend with, Island Fashion ended upon the front end. The gray was head-and-head withWildwood Royal (Royal Academy) for the opening half, but took control after six furlongs and galloped away toan easy score. “I did not expect the race to set up likethat at all,” winning jockey Iggy Puglisi said. “It waskind of a fumbled break. She made the lead and putaway [Wildwood Royal] on the backside. Once sherelaxed, it was just a matter of when I would call onher.” The winner of the WinStar Sunland Oaks twostarts back, Island Fashion was rebounding from alackluster seventh-place effort in the GI Kentucky OaksMay 2. Awesome Humor, the even-money chalk, hadher chances compromised by the break. “My horse wasnot ready,” jockey Robbie Albarado said. “She wascutting up a little bit and squirming a little bit.
