This course is open to students with little or no past experience and to those who wish to expand upon their talent. Art tries to affect the way you see and think about things. In art, you are expected to learn how to express your personal feelings, become art critics and to value art creation.

To achieve this . You will learn to use tempera paint, watercolours, acrylic paint, ink, pencil, charcoal, cut paper, oil pastel, chalk pastel, and modeling clay. We will explore the elements of Art and how they work together to create Art. Evaluation for Art is based on sketchbooks, studio assignments and projects, growth, creativity, effort, and how well the work fulfills the assignment.

DRAMA 9 (93200) (Full Year) The grade 9 drama program offers students the opportunity to learn many drama styles and to present a number of forms of theatre to peers. Because students will be guided through each unit starting with basics, previous enrolment in drama is not necessary. OPTIONAL COURSES

INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC 9 (94100) (Full Year) The music program at École Avalon School is continuous; knowledge and skills are built on from year to year. Because of the sequential nature of the program it is only possible to enter the Music program at the Grade 7 level. The instrumental music program at Avalon School is an integral part of the school, involving a large number of students in curricular and co-curricular music-making. The goals of the instrumental music program are to help students develop competencies and to strive for excellence in playing, listening, reading, creating, and valuing. The instrumental music program is actively supported by the Avalon Instrumental Music Society (A.I.M.S.), a parent support group. A.I.M.S. raises funds for purchase of instruments, for subsidies for activities, for scholarships, etc., and assists with supervisory duties at activities which take the bands away from the school. All parents of music students are encouraged to join A.I.M.S. The A.I.M.S general meeting is help on October of each year for all band parents.

Music is an Academic Option. Please be aware that it is one of the few options that is used to calculate the average for the High School Rutherford Scholarship. It is also the only option which can be used for entrance to some faculties at

University. Please also be aware that you must be in Music in Junior High to register for Music in Senior High.

ENVIRONMENTAL OUTDOOR EDUCATION 9 (95700) (Semestered—$75—$95.00)) The Grade 9 EOE program combines physical activity and field trips with environmental study that will challenge students and provide a basis for future growth. Because this option is filled with many activities in all seasons, students must be willing to be physically active and attempt all aspects of the program. Activities - Activities and field trips will take place in all seasons and may include golf, SCUBA diving, cross-country skiing, ice-fishing, knife skills, fire and shelter building, environmental studies and many cooperative games. EXPLORATION IN FILM 9 (90550) (Full Year) Because we live in a predominately visual society, we are forced to process images by applying critical thinking skills. In or-der to be a critical consumer of these images, it is essential for us to develop the knowledge and understanding of how visu-als are manipulated to convey the message. Students enrolled in Exploration in Film 9 will study film not only as an art, but as a means of communication. In many cases today, students receive their stories more often through film than they do through reading a book. In this course, you will be taught to “read” a film. You will analyze narrative structure and look at the director’s purpose in creating a film; conventions of many different genres; learn to read subtext; and learn the artistic and technical aspects of film making. The emphasis will be on the various elements of film that filmmakers use to convey meaning. The course will also include the history of and traditions behind film making. As well, students will begin to examine how film often reflects the times and conditions in which they are made, and on the flip side, how films sometimes shape attitudes and values in a society. Assessment in this course will include note taking, journal writing and various independent and group projects. You will watch film and film clips, but the assignments will involve some written work.

This course can be considered an extension of Language Arts and an exploration of popular culture.

ART CLUB To join our club, students do not have to be “artistic” or “talented”. They do not have to be in the Art option class. Students need only be enthusiastic and responsible. This group meets during the noon hour. Projects include watercolour and tempra painting, calligraphy and other art materials. The Art Club members help to arrange displays, circulate art displays throughout the school, and create seasonal theme decorations for the school.

CONCERT BAND: GRADE 9 The Concert Band is a co-curricular activity open to all grade 9 band students. Every year the grade 9 Concert Band goes to camp for two days of playing music and doing recreational activities. This group also attends festivals and performs at elementary schools. As well, Concert Band members may be invited to be part of the Northern Alberta Honour Band or the Junior High Honor Band for the Night of Music. Being a member of the concert band means a personal commitment one full band rehearsal per week. It also means having the opportunity to experience success and perform in one of Alberta's finest young musical ensembles.

At Avalon, all students have numerous opportunities to participate in extra-

curricular activities. Many of these activities are scheduled at the beginning of

the school year and relate to physical education, fine arts, curriculum

enhancement, civic responsibility, and leadership development. Listed

alphabetically, some of these activities are outlined below.

Enjoy the life of the theater with other students and teacher supervision. The package price for Citadel Club is $235.00.

Improv Team: Another incredible opportunity for drama enthusiasts is the Improv Team. Students are invited to audition for this one. We rehearse both at lunch and after school. To practice performing for audiences, we have mini competitions, open to the public, at lunch times. Also – we attend at least one tournament each year, at which our students compete against other schools. This is always a lot of fun and a terrific learning experience.
