Karly la the week a fearful storm raged in these mountains. The manner in which it was over-com- v is described by the Oakland Transcript. The snow bad fallen in preal sheets to a depth of about eighteen feet, and had drifted in vast piles upon the track, uatikinc ap tbe highway of commerce between tho extreme Kast and tbe far West. At Colfax, the three were recrwiled by two of equal and tbe 6re toiled on up the snowy heights. At Blue Canon the 6ve mighty travelers were brought to a standstill by the forces of the hostile and in their extremity seven other enormous engines,, of rifiv-fiv- e tons each, came to their assistance and relief, and twelve black monsters, red-h- with exertion and inspired with boiling wrath, united tbeir tremendous strength, and tore through the blocked-ti- p gorge for more than ten miles. Once more the twelve mighty and resolute travelers were brought to by a huce mountain of enow. They dashed at it with their miglit and a speed of thirty miles an hour, but the rampart was immovable ; they were flung back in contempt and disdain, and tbe Storm-Kin- g laughed triumph and derision from a distant pinnacle of rock. Here a poor weak mortal, but endowed with immortal Mind, haviog been a spectator of the uwful contest, came and hitched Ml the train of heavy cars, giving their next on- set greater momentum. Tnrm Majsstiks thk King akd Qi ek.x have

duting the past week continued their progressthrough the windward Islands of Hawaii. Mauiand Molokai. everywhere receiving the most flat-

tering demonstrations of welcome and loyalty

from the people. Our last week's report an-

nounced their arrival at Hilo. where they spenttwo day. From that place the steamer took

them to Kaalualu. the southern-mos- t point ofHawaii, and at the beautiful village of Waiohitiu

they spent one day. leaving on Saturday noon forKona. where they spent Sunday. Monday andTuesday. April C and 7th. were spent at Kawai-ha- e

and Kobala. The royal party reachedMaui on Tuesday evening, and remained on thatisland one week, visiting the principal settle-

ments. From Ishaina they embarked on Tues-

day morning lor Molokai. to visit the Ieper set-

tlement, where a portion of Tuesday was spent, their Majesties being accompanied by the Boardof Health. The steamer reached her dock lastevening at 11 o'clock, and the population of thecity turned out en masse to receive the royal party.Their Majesties landed soon after, under a royal

salute from Punchbowl, which was illuminated,

arid were driven to the palace, the wharves andstreets being brilliant with torches, while bonfires

on the hills in rear of the city lit up the sub-

urbs, und turned night into dav.

1t was very thoughtful in Their Majesties to

include a visit to the Lepers on Molokai. in theirprogress through their kingdom, and the effect

on the unfortunates there confined, cannot beother than beneficial, showing them as well asothers, that their King and Queen possess a ten-

der regard for those w ho are banished for publicsafety to that secluded spot, from which. tho.:ghit be a garden of Paradise, none who enter it aslepers can expect ever to leave. But the wisdomof having them isolated as they are. is every dayshowing itself. The placue is practically arrest-ed, and do lepers are seen or heard of nowamong the people, who are. under the presentrigid system, saved from its fatal spread. Wequestion whether the history of any people showsa more praiseworthy act. tban that which theHawa.ian Government and people did when they

took every leper high or low. rich or poor, from

their homes, their families, their husbands, wivesand children, and sect them to a secluded, but

healthy and beautiful retreat, from which there is

do escape. Whatever else the Hawaiian people

may do worthy of record, this actwill always be instanced as showing them posses?ed of the noblest traits which humanity is en-

dowed with.

Thetime occupied by the steamers crossing the Atlanticfrom Liverpool to New York during eight monthsof the year, does not exceed ten days. Indeed fre-

quently It is under ten day. From New York toSan Francisco the distance ia at present accom-plished In six days and twenly hours and this willbe shortly reduced. In number then the

from Liverpool to New York would occupyseventeen day. No great exertion hitherto hasbeen made to promote the qniek dispatch of themalls from London to San Francisco, yet weas positive fact, that the average time occupied In

their transmission, extending over lengthened pe-

riod, has been about nineteen days, and this la be-

ing lessened by the Increased facilities affoidcd onthe railway line. Well now, under mure favorablecircumstances and have been promised every

by the companies and .the Ameri-

take the trouble to calculate the distance, hewill dud that steaming at the rate of twelve knots anhour. It can be done in that time. We bear the as-

CHEAP AXD DEsIR VBI.F. HOMES.

For the purchase of cheap and desirable homesAlexander County, in Western North Carolina,

affords most excellent opportunities. The pricesof good lands (unimproved) range from two tofive dollars per acre. Improved lands, of goodquality, from five to ten dollars per acre, accord-

ing to improvements. These lands nre admirablyadapted to the cultivation of nearly every kind ol

cereal and vegetable ; and there is always ready

market for the products of the farm. Most of

the fruits of temperate climate succeed remark-

ably well. There is also evidence ol the exist-

ence of several kinds of valuable minerals in thiscounty, while the water power afforded by itsmountain streams is sufficient ti drive nearly if

not all the machinery in the State. There is also

very large snpply of valuable limber, snch as
