WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE SOMEONE HOPING FOR A CAREER IN HUMAN RESOURCES? Don’t have the mindset 'computer says no'! HR is a very busy field and needs people with a proactive, intelligent approach. Do some research, there are many specialist areas within HR eg: Recruitment/Employee Relations to name but a few. Seek advice from professionals in the industry or CIPD. WHAT DO YOU CONSIDER TO BE YOUR GREATEST ACHIEVEMENT? On a professional basis then it has to be setting up Kendrick Rose at a time of recession and surviving! The journey here has taken me through unimagined highs and lows and seen me swap the status, salary and security of a great job for the variety, independence and freedom of self-employment. I have learnt a great deal about running a business, I have also learnt a lot about myself, resilience being high on the list. It is certainly not easy to break free from the rat race, but the rewards, both personal and professional, are immense if you can see it through. DO YOU HAVE ANY TIPS FOR MANAGING A WORK/LIFE BALANCE? Time out for me is to spend some quality time with my daughter Olivia. I also believe it is vital to switch off, I enjoy yoga and like to escape on my annual jaunt with other ‘yogis’, preferably somewhere very hot, to practise and recharge mind, body and spirit! WHAT IS YOUR LAST THOUGHT OF THE DAY? What’s for dinner….. then I wind down by reading some non- work related fiction to switch off at the end of the day! BUSINESS Shelley Kendrick is the Director and founder of Kendrick Rose, an executive recruitment and resourcing company based in Jersey. Shelley is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development, a member of the British Psychological Society and a qualified practitioner in psychometric testing. The company has developed an impressive client list and has managed senior hire campaigns for a number of high profile and blue chip clients. The company also provides a range of strategic HR consultancy services providing specialist advice and HR solutions. HOW DO YOU KICK START THE BUSINESS DAY? My day starts around 6.30am when I’m up and showered then trying to rouse my 11-year-old daughter who is definitely not a morning person! I cannot function in the morning without my first strong cup of tea which has to be in a bone china cup, and yes it absolutely does make a difference! WHAT IS YOUR FIRST TASK OF THE DAY? I like to start the day with a team briefing where we decide on the priorities: our considered first tweet of the day and sharing my thoughts and current trends in best HR practice. It’s amazing the information you can pick up on Twitter. After a quick check of the emails it’s onto our website to update any new positions, before picking up the phone to talk to clients. The industry I work in is all about communication and it’s important to have a grasp of all the multi-media devices available – although there’s nothing like face to face conversations for truly engaging with somebody…. HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR LEADERSHIP STYLE? Democratic. I encourage the team to engage in projects, decisions and networking. I want my team to be happy at work, with opportunities to develop and challenges to stretch them. Communication is vital, we have open and transparent discussions and have 'one-to-one' five minute meetings every morning to ensure we’re all in the loop with activities. WHAT MAKES KENDRICK ROSE SO SUCCESSFUL? I firmly believe that ‘you cannot buy good word of mouth’. Remaining true to our ethos and integrity, that is at the heart of everything we do – we obtain our business because we are ethical and professional.
