ATHLETES GUIDE

WELCOME FROM TEAM IN2ADVENTURE

On behalf of team In2Adventure we would like to send out the biggest welcome to athletes, friends and families attending round three of the 2019/20 TreX season, in Bendigo’s historic goldfields.

We are so excited to launch the fourteenth season of TreX with four events across the nation.

Fourteen years ago we discovered this amazing sport of cross triathlon and started

with a dream to develop the sport within Australia. After our first small events in Queensland, the series and the popularity of the sport continued to develop and grow.

Seven years ago we had a dream that we would love to invite the world to this spectacular land downunder and in 2016 that dream came true when we welcomed athletes from 28 countries across the world to Australia at the 2016 ITU Cross Triathlon World Championships.

2019/20 sees the continuation of that dream and we are so very proud to have the privilege to host Oceania, Australian and State Championships and World Champs Qualification races as part of the series.

We look forward to hopefully helping you to take away some amazing memories and experiences of your time in Bendigo that will stay with you for a lifetime.

It is a true privilege to welcome each and every one of you to our very special In2Adventure Family. We wish you all every success; and no matter what your dreams or goals; we encourage you to aim high, strive with all your heart, but most of all have the most awesome time doing it.

Now let’s get this party started!

Best Wishes

Robyn, Simon & the In2Adventure Team

LOCAL INFORMATION BENDIGO REGION

Apart from discovering all the awesome natural beauty of Bendigo during the Goldfields Multisport Festival, Bendigo is a city of insta-worthy shops, locally-made drops, pottery, pictures and fun times for the family.

In other words, in our lovely city you can partake in your fair share of holiday dining, sampling local wines, craft beer and market goodies.

You can shop for amazing things you never knew you needed until you spied them. Find boutiques curated by quirky locals and collections of Bendigo-made art, craft and fashion. It’s well worth a good old rummage.

You can marvel at our arts and culture in the galleries and museums, then cultivate a healthy love of our natural attractions.

Walk and cycle the city and beyond, book a guided tour of the best bits or take your time experiencing our authentic attractions – if you’ve got kids, you’re going to want to do them all.

Mix and match from these ideas, then hatch your plan for a visit worth writing home about. Or at the very least posting, tweeting, etc etc. Selfies with Sun Loong anyone?

At all times athletes and entourage must respect the natural environment and native wildlife. Athletes are to carry their rubbish (gel wrappers, bottles etc) back to Race HQ.

This is an important issue and any violation of this will result in penalties or even disqualification, so let’s do the right thing.

NATIVE WILDLIFE Australia is home to a number of poisonous reptiles and insects that may be encountered on the course during the event and in training. In most situations when left alone they pose little harm, however, be aware you are entering into their habitat.

OUTSIDE ASSISTANCE As per Triathlon Australia Race Rules, athletes will be disqualified for receiving any outside assistance or equipment (race nutrition, drinks, clothing and equipment) from unauthorised race personnel, i.e. spectators, family, friends or coaches (outside of the designated aid stations) Athletes will be disqualified if they hide items along the race course and collect them during the race or leave items on the course to be collected afterwards.

TRANSITION AREA The Transition Area is where athletes transition between each leg of the event:

§ T1 | Swim to Mountain Bike

§ T2 | Mountain Bike to Trail Run

There are a number of rules associated with the transition area and we recommend that all competitors read and familiarise themselves with information on the website here. Key points to note include:

§ Transition Entry § Transition Closure Times § Bike Safety Checks § Set Up § Courtesy in Transition § Getting to Know the Transition Area § Bike Pick Up

Transition is located in the council compound adjacent to Race HQ. Only competitors are permitted in the Transition Area. We recommend athletes take a few minutes to identify the key areas in transition especially:

§ Swim Entry; § Bike Exit; § Bike Entry; § Run Exit; and § Where your bike is located in relation to the swim entry and bike entry, so

you can find it easily.

For transition opening and closing times please refer to the event timetable.

SHOE DROP The run to transition is approx. 150m which includes some gravel road. There will be a shoe drop located at the swim exit for those who wish to leave footwear for the run back to transition. Footwear should be placed in this area before the start of the event.

DIRT KIDS TRANSITION AREA Dirt Kids is a non-competitive event and is all about giving our young champions of tomorrow a chance to have load of fun in a relaxed atmosphere.

Dirt Kids will place their bikes in a relaxed transition area located near Race HQ just prior to the Dirt Kids Event Start.

Please listen out for the announcements at Race HQ for details. Transition rules are relaxed and we welcome parents and friends to encourage participants in a really positive and helpful way in the Dirt Kids Transition.

COURSE SIGNAGE The course will be marked primarily colour coded A4 signs indicating discipline and/or course. Bunting and cones will also be utilised. Course marshals will be located throughout the course; however, it’s important to note that it is the competitor’s responsibility to know the course and take the correct route on the day.

Please note that the course will also be marked with red arrows on white background for Trail Run Australia. TreX athletes please follow the signage as outlined below.

ATHLETES GUIDE

The Sprint and Junior courses are suitable for those new to mountain biking, and the Standard Distance course will challenge those with advanced technical riding skills in a number of rocky, pinchy climbing sections.

This will be a fast course and we anticipate fast times on the day.

OVERTAKING There are many opportunities for safe overtaking on the course. Below are the standard overtaking procedures on the mountain bike.

1. Keep to the left of the track where possible and allow others to pass.

2. Walking something you do not feel confident riding is fine! However, please move off the track to allow riders right of way.

3. When passing, give the person in front a friendly shout to indicate that you wish to pass “Passing when you’re ready”

4. If being passed, as soon as safe to do so move to the edge of the trail. You may need to ride off the trail to allow the faster rider to pass.

5. You must give track to a rider who wishes to pass, do not deliberately block from overtaking, this is against the rules and contrary to the spirit of the event.

6. If you aren’t confident or capable of riding off the track to let another rider pass then you must dismount off the track to allow other riders to pass.

7. Race hard! But keep it friendly & have a great time doing it!

TRAIL RUN COURSE Taking in the beautiful and diverse scenery and terrain of No 7 Park this trail run will challenge competitors with a combination of undulating trails, traversing Crusoe Reservoir including technical and rocky sections.

The run is 80% off-trail and is one of the most diverse of the TreX series. It includes one of our favourite sections, affectionately know as ‘Log In Log Out’ which is a 150m log run on 1m high logs. It also includes the ever-popular gully run with its gnarly, rocky terrain.

In some sections there are no trails and you will be running through the bush in rough terrain. For this reason we recommend runners wear protective eye wear as well as suitable footwear for the terrain.

MOST IMPORTANTLY The most important aspect of the event is the experience.

Where you cross the finish line is important, but equally important is the experience you take away from the event. So please, race hard, but also remember to relax and enjoy the event for what it is… a great opportunity to get into the outdoors with your mates and have an awesome time!
