I N THE second chapter of his Exhortation on the call to holiness in today’s world, Pope Francis identifies to subtle enemies of holiness: Gnosticism and Pelagianism. The Greek word “gnosis” means knowledge and in the very early Church there was a heretical movement (gnosticism) which claimed that Jesus had given a secret knowledge to the apostles after the Resurrection and that without this secret knowledge there could be no salvation. In practice this meant that only a very “elite” group could be saved. Pope Francis warns that this gnostic mentality is seeping back into the Church. He writes: “Thanks be to God, throughout the history of the Church it has always been clear that a person’s perfection is measured not by the information or knowledge they possess, but by the depth of their charity” (37). Perhaps we notice this tendency in the New Age movement or in some fundamentalist churches. What Francis calls “disembodied spirituality” is a new form of gnosticism. Such tendencies tend to diminish the sense of mystery inherent in true faith. The second ancient heresy which Pope Francis warms about is Pelagianism. Pelagius was a British monk of a severe turn of mind. He placed theological emphasis, not on the mind (as with the gnostics) but on the will, leading to view that humans are able by sheer will-power to lead holy lives and sanctify themselves. This in turn led to the conviction that grace and salvation was a “do-it-yourself” project. A visit to the self-help shelves of our bookshops shows how stubborn Pelagianism remains today! Translated into Church terms Pope Francis sees evidence of a new Pelagianism in “an obsession with the law, an absorption with social and political advantages, a punctilious concern for the Church’s liturgy, doctrine and prestige, a vanity about the ability to manage practical matters and an excessive concern with programmes of self-help and personal fulfilment” (57). Pope Francis reaffirms the Church’s teaching on the priority of God’s grace: “Only on the basis of God’s gift, freely accepted and humbly received, can we co-operate by our own efforts in our progressive transformation”. We see this most vividly in the life and spirituality of St Thérèse of Lisieux for whom “everything is grace”. The humbling truth is “We must first belong to God, offering ourselves to him who was there first, and entrusting to him our abilities, our efforts, our struggle against evil and our creativity, so that his free gift may grow and develop within us” (56). When Christian groups give excessive importance to certain rules, customs or ways of acting they can become museum pieces or worse, end up “fossilized... or corrupt” (58). In an age of “fake news” it is not surprising that “fake religions” and “fake spiritualities” can emerge. Such movements can give a false impression of the Gospel and obscure the beauty of holiness. Having dealt with these subtle enemies, Pope Francis is ready to address the heart of holiness.

IN THE second chapter of his Exhortation on the call to holiness in today’s world, Pope Francis identif ies to subtle enemies of holiness:

Gnosticism and Pelagianism.The Greek word

“ g n o s i s ” m e a n s k n o w l e d g e a n d in t he ver y ea r l y Church there was a heretical movement (gnost icism) which cla imed that Jesus had given a secret knowledge to the apos t les a f ter the Resurrection and that without this secret knowledge there could be no salvation.

Translated into Church terms Pope Francis sees evidence of a new Pelagianism in “an

The humbling truth is “We must f irst belong to God, offering ourselves to him who was there f irst, and entrusting to him our abilities, our efforts, our struggle against evil and our creativity, so that his free gift may grow and develop within us” (56).

When Chr is t ian groups g ive excessive importance to certain rules, customs or ways of acting they can become museum pieces or worse, end up “fossilized... or corrupt” (58).

In an age of “fake news” it is not surprising that “ fake religions” and “ fake spiritualities” can emerge. Such movements can give a false impression of the Gospel and obscure the beauty of holiness.
