THE Body of Christ, we must always remember, is a glorious and risen body, or, what St Paul in 1 Corinthians 15 calls, a “spiritual,
imperishable” body. Catholics are not cannibals despite derogatory comments that they “eat human flesh”. Through the sacrament of the Eucharist, in consuming the consecrated host and wine, we participate in the fullness of Christ’s life which expands beyond his pre-existence with the Father and the Holy Spirit, to include his incarnation (taking on a human body through Mary), his passion and death, his glorious resurrection, and his ascension to the right hand of the Father. In communion Christ is really present to us in his absolute fullness, not just in his 33 earthly years.
Situating Corpus Christi within our theme of “Easter Feasts” will help us to see beyond the stulted view that in communion we receive the pre-resurrection human body of Christ. Some readers may remember catechism teachers telling us that if we bite the host it will bleed! Among the post-resurrection allusions to the Eucharist, one incident stands out: the experience of the two disciples on the road to Emmaus. Recall how Jesus walked with them on the road, explaining the Scriptures to them (what we might call the “Liturgy of the Word” at Mass). Picture him entering their home, with he himself taking the bread, breaking and blessing it and handing it to them (the “Liturgy of the Eucharist”). Isn’t it ironic the way Luke suggests that that their eyes were opened at the same time
Jesus disappeared from their sight? The message is quite simple. No longer must they perceive Jesus as the historical Jesus whom they witnessed being crucified; they now must “see” him through the eyes of faith, not sitting there physically in front of them, but experience his very life dwelling within them as their Risen Lord!
Jesus promised this during his Eucharistic discourse in John 6:56 – “Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood lives in me and I in them.” He repeats it in his farewell discourses after the Last Supper: Make your home in me as I make mine in you (John 15:3); Father, may they be one in us as you are in me and I am in you… With me in them and you in me may they be completely one.” (John 17:21-23). Isn’t this incredible! Our communion with Christ through the sacrament of the Eucharist brings us into full communion with the intimacy of life and love within the mystery of the Holy Trinity itself. Let us not forget the role of the Holy Spirit either. At the key moment of the consecration during the Mass the celebrant invokes the presence and the power of the Holy Spirit to sanctify the bread and wine and to turn them into the Body and Blood of Christ. The Holy Spirit is the bond of Love between the Father and the Son, sent to draw us into that Love.
O Sacred Banquet in which the fullness of Christ is received, the memory of his Paschal Mystery is renewed; our lives are filled with grace, and the pledge of future glory is given to us.

Mon 24 Jun BIRTH OF ST JOHN THE BAPTISTIsaiah 49:1-6; Psalm 139; Luke 1:57-66.80Yet the least in the kingdom, Jesus said, is greater than he – for the pure gift of salvation that the Father gives. John challenges us to a fundamental and total placing of our lives within the will of God.
Sun 30 Jun 13TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME1 Kings 19:16.19-21; Psalm 16; Luke 9:51-62Our enemy is not outside of us. Our true enemy is the anger, hatred and discrimination that is found in the hearts and minds of man. We need to seek nonviolent ways to remove this enemy.– Thich Nhat Hahn
Sat 29 Jun SS PETER & PAUL, APOSTLESActs 12:1-11; Psalm 34; Matthew 16:13-19For Paul, persecution, humiliation, and weakness became his day-by-day carrying of the cross, material for further transformation. The dying Christ was in him; the living Christ was his life.
Fri 28 Jun SACRED HEART OF JESUSEzekiel 34:11-16; Psalm 23; Luke 15:3-7“How good and pleasant it is to dwell in the Heart of Jesus! Who is there who does not love a Heart so wounded? Who can refuse a return of love to a Heart so loving?” – St Bernard of Clairvaux
Thu 27 Jun (St Cyril of Alexandria, BD)Genesis 16:1-12.15-16; Psalm 106; Matthew 7:21-29As two pieces of wax fused together make one so he who receives Holy Communion is so united with Christ that Christ is in him and he is in Christ – St Cyril of Alexandria.
Wed 26 Jun Liturgy of the DayGenesis 15:1-12.17-18; Psalm 105; Matthew 7:15-20What kind of tree am I? Beneath the leaves and bark, what’s at my core? What desires motivate me? What and who do I love? Does Christ live in me? And what dif ference does that really make?
Tue 25 Jun Liturgy of the DayGenesis 13:2.5-18; Psalm 15; Matthew 7:6.12-14Prayer defines the Christian life. It requires that we stand in God’s presence with open hands, naked and vulnerable, proclaiming that without God we can do nothing.
