John Ball has been running his mouth for for-ty-five years and he isn’t about to stop now! He has outlasted expectations, odds, a major

health issue, and many of his peers! The auction company that John started fresh out of college in 1969, Ball Auction Service, is celebrating it’s forty-fifth year of business and still going strong!

The chances of a company surviving 45 years are shockingly slim. In fact, data from the US De-partment of Labor shows that, of all private sec-tor businesses started in 1994, only 24.6 percent were still in business sixteen years later in 2010. Beating the odds and keeping your business alive and thriving over multiple decades definitely takes more than having a marketable product or service.

“Quality service is Ball Auction Service’s long standing trademark and there is never a question whether they are working for the customer (seller). The next generation has bought into John’s eye for detail and service and the team is well positioned

for the long term. Attend a few auctions and Ball Auction Service will be at the top of your Rolodex when you decide to have your auc-tion.”- Norm Wolff, auction-goer (and tractor buyer)

Ball Auction Service didn’t happen into suc-cess, John planned for it and worked hard for it and never gave up on it. “From my early childhood, I gave 100% to everything all of the time. Somehow I was still always the un-derdog, but I guess that way I was always in the shade!”

John’s early days as an auctioneer were all about the experience - the time on the mi-crophone calling bids and fine-tuning that process. His weekends consisted of a 550 mile weekend trip. He would leave Stillwa-ter, Oklahoma, after he finished his Friday classes at Oklahoma State University, and head straight to the livestock auction barn in Hugo, Oklahoma to work as relief auction-eer. He did his part and was fed a good meal (especially for a college student) and then headed straight to Denton, Texas, where he would stay the night in the home of auction-eer, George Williams, before they went to work at the livestock auction in Pilot Point, Texas, on Saturday together. Following that Saturday auction, John would drive his 1964 dark cherry red Valiant to his granddad’s place in Agra, Oklahoma, and spend Sunday doing as many farm chores as two people could get done in a day before finally return-ing to the Farmhouse Fraternity in Stillwater to study and complete assignments for his classes. His income for the weekend was

$50 plus all his meals.

Now, four and a half decades later John has earned a reputation as a solid auction man-ager and beloved auctioneer - someone even other auctioneers will hire or recommend to their families! He has sold over $100,000,000 in real estate; sold over $100,000,000 worth of personal property and shares the suc-cess and the business with his son, Justin Ball. Together, they have made Ball Auction Service into one of the region’s benchmark auction companies.Justin’s start in the auction industry is quite different from John’s - no 550 mile roundtrip each weekend. However, it wasn’t an easy start either, he did have to sacrifice almost every weekend of his childhood for auc-tion setup, go-fer-ing (running coffee, clerk sheets, etc), and clean up, until one day in 1991 John handed Justin the microphone during an auction and welcomed him to the bid-calling ranks.

Page 6: Auctions Monthly May 2014 Issue

“Dad had me practicing for quite awhile but never told me when I was going to actually auc-tioneer. I would practice as we drove up and down the road, or when I was working on the tractor. Then one morning when we arrived at the auction site, my Dad said, today is the day. I tried to say I wasn’t ready, but he insisted and sure enough, I did sell that day and the people were great. Being a beginning auctioneer, at a young age, the people were very tolerant, and really helpful. I sold some boxes for one, two, three dollars, but that’s how I got my start.“

Fast forward 23 years, but keep that micro-phone in Justin’s hand and place him on stage at the Oklahoma State Auctioneer’s Associa-tion convention and competition. That’s where he found himself this year - just a few months ago - competing in the annual professional bid-calling contest. The contest included pre-liminary live bid-calling, a round of interviews and a live bid-calling finals. Justin will repre-

sent Oklahoma at the International Auction-eers Contest in Louisville, Kentucky, at the National Auctioneers Association Conference this summer.

Suffice to say a lot of practice, auctions, and education filled the time between that 14-year-old Justin and the state champion auctioneer he is today. Aside from earning his bachelor’s degree from Oklahoma State University, Justin holds an Oklahoma real estate license and is in his second year of a three year educational program for auctioneers, Certified Auctioneers Institute (CAI).

Justin says it was really an honor to win the bid-calling title and it was a fun competition, but emphasizes that being an auctioneer is about a lot more than bid-calling. “Auction-eering - or bid calling - is just a small part of what we do, a small part of the overall pro-cess. We spend a lot of time talking to people

Page 7: Auctions Monthly May 2014 Issue

www.auctions-monthly.comMay 2014 Page 7

about what their problem or situation is; then we put time into coming up with a solution that will work specifically for them. Whether it’s an estate that needs to be settled; a business liq-uidation; a person who has taken a job some-where and needs to sell before they move; or just someone having a transition in their life. People come to us and say this is what we need to achieve and then we figure out a plan to do it. Sometimes it’s a straight-forward pro-cess with a focus on local marketing and then we get into some projects that are larger and more complicated - drawn out over time and on a national scale. Even beyond that, with our online bidding platforms we have gone beyond the borders of the United States. We also put a lot of thought into marketing whatever the commodity is on that particular auction loca-tion - beyond the advertising - the sale order and organization of items. There are a lot of strategies we employ to make sure we have an organized and successful auction. There are a lot of things that happen between the first phone call and the start of the bid-calling.”

Sure these guys really know their industry that much is clear by their success, but they also have a reputation of being very entertaining, as well; and that may not be the cake - but it’s definitely the icing (and really, who wants cake with no icing?). Clearly these guys love what they are doing and that has to contribute to their forty-five years of growth and success!

“Sale day action is a lot of fun! Things are go-ing to happen and I am going to be right in the

middle of it milking it for all it’s worth! Calling bids is really the part all auctioneers love and enjoy - that’s the reason they became auctioneers. The real trick is getting the opportunity to auctioneer and get paid for it! The auction process is a very old and proven form of selling that has stood the test of time, a successful auctioneer must organize and orchestrate the entire process to achieve a desirable result. I figured out early on in this business that getting paid is a by-product of doing a good job and doing it right!”

Rocking R Auctions was founded in 2012 after owner Robert Rosales returned to Clovis, NM af-ter attending the Texas Auction Academy in Lew-isville, TX. He opened his first auction gallery in a small double garage in Clovis with the help of his wife Jolene, his in-laws (Bobby and Arlene Aragon) and a few friends. Together they were able to produce a fun small town auction.

Robert and his crew were not new comers to the auc-tion world as he had many years working for other auctioneers in many aspects of the auction business except as a bid caller. His wife Jolene has also worked for other auctioneers in the office of their auctions. His father-in-law had his own small auction company that Robert and Jolene helped out with when he needed the help and his mother-in-law was also involved in the office with other auctioneers. (Bobby and Arlene had a bid hand in helping another local auctioneer start out and grow into a big successful company). So knowing this, Robert knew that this would be a great opportunity (plus all the experience his family had didn’t hurt) to start his own auction company.

In July 2013 he was able to purchase a 5,000 square foot historical building in Clovis and moved opera-tions there. Then in December 2013, he was asked if he would come to Azle, TX once a month and host an auction for another auction company. He agreed. After his first auction Azle, the other company came to him and said they were getting out of business and the auctions in Azle were all his. So once again he had to move operations and is now at 404 W Main St in Azle, TX.

Of course with all the growing that has happened, it didn’t come without any problems. But they were able to overcome all the obstacles. His in-laws regularly

Page 23: Auctions Monthly May 2014 Issue

www.auctions-monthly.comMay 2014 Page 23

make the trip from Northern New Mexico to Azle for the auctions where Bobby is his lead ring man, Arlene shares registration and cashiering duties with Laurie Miller (who also does clerking work as well as auction prep), and his wife is still his main clerk. Jolene is ac-tively training Laurie for this position as Jolene is also a full time student at Parker University and will be gradu-ating as a Doctor of Chiropractic in about 3 years. And of course 2 of his original crew have since moved to the Dallas/Ft. Worth area and still work part time for him as ring man (Daniel Lee) and Runner (Holly Rippie). They also enable the help of the local organization Teen Chal-lenge (a program to help addicts overcome their addic-tions to drugs and alcohol) to help with the loading of large items and clean up. And of course they are always on the lookout for a new and up and coming auctioneer to help out when the need arises.

Rocking R Auctions & Realty specialize in the auction method of marketing for both personal and real prop-erty, as well as livestock, charity & fundraising events, and even specialty sales.

Since Robert has moved operations to Azle, he has also become a real estate agent for Keller Williams. He is looking forward to his career as an auctioneer/agent and this is keeping him pretty busy, but he still gets to go back to New Mexico to host auctions there as well. And yes, his original crew still comes to help out at the auctions.

One auction that Robert and Jolene started in New Mexico (and will continue in Azle) is the Christmas Kids Auction. This is a free auction for the kids in the commu-nity who would not normally have a Christmas for what-ever reason. He asks for new toys for kids from 4 years old up to 16 years old form his customers and clients. Then in November, he and Jolene will go shopping for toys (with the help of kids of course) and spend $2,000 to $3,000 on new toys and 1 new tablet computer. Every Child will be given a $300 credit to bid with. The tablet will be given away to one bidder (only kids are allowed to bid) at the end of the auction. When asked why he does this, he replied “I like kids and these kids like to have Christmas presents. They (the kids) might not have any Christmas presents under the tree and with this auction; they will get to enjoy more than just the basic necessities like clothing and food. And what kid doesn’t like toys?” He plans on keeping this tradition alive as long as he is in Azle. And with the help of the building owners and community, he doesn’t see why it wouldn’t be an annual event.

Robert’s company Rocking R Auctions & Realty has big plans for their future. Besides the auction gallery in Azle, he is looking at being able to expand to a second gallery in another part of the DFW metroplex. And of course he is always open for traveling to other areas to help oth-

Of course besides his love of the kids, his main love is his wife of 13 years, and then that of learning about history which is why the auction industry is a great fit for him. He is also currently talking to others in his area about starting a true performance horse auction.
