Florence and the machine

Florence and the machine has a very unique style of dress sense and just a free spirited ‘hippy’ style. This attracts the younger generations, between the ages of around 14 – 20 years, as this is the age where you are beginning to become aware of how the world is. Florence herself is 24 years old so she is also looked up to by this audience range. our target audience is around the same age. Florence goes for the natural look as she is an idol she is using this to show kids / the age range of her audience that its time to change the world with recycling and such. She also wears vintage clothes which is also a form of recycling and she also wears floral clothing and vibrant colours that also connect to the younger audience too.

Florence and the machineThe Website

When you enter Florence's website you are greeted with some lungs that breathe continuously on the home page, a butterfly that slowly flaps its wings and a rose that gets bigger and then eventually dies and falls off the page. This is a very typical of Florence’s style, Florence and the machine is very unique and she continues this unique style on her website also. This promotes her ‘weird’ style very well and makes the audience that visits her website left knowing who and what this artist represents.

The Music Videos

Florence and the machine

Florence appears in her video’s as what seems like an untamed person, who is slightly crazy! As you can see from these pictures that I have collected from three different music videos of hers, they all symbolize nature and show that she wants to be linked with nature, and the free, fun and childish style of living! This is represented in her music and this is what she wants you to experience whilst listening to her music, and watching her videos.

An example of this is her ‘dog days are over’ video. As she is in an abandoned woods which shows the nature and symbolizes the free hippy life style. Clowns, toys and bright colours are also shown in the video which she would like to link to the childish message that she is trying to put across to her target audience.

Florence and the machineThe AlbumCover

Florence’s album cover continues the theme throughout all of her other media advertisers with the floral, fun, natural, uniqueness running through out the cover. She is what looks like a floral curtain and flowers showing the free living style. This attracts the target audience as it is very natural and so it relates to the earthly appeal to show a very stylist unique album cover that connects the bright red lungs hung around her neck and the name of the album.

The Kooks

A self-described "pop" band, their music is primarily influenced by the 1960s British Invasion movement and post-punk revival of the new millennium. With songs described as "catchy as hell", The Kooks have experimented in several genres including rock, Britpop, pop, reggae, and Ska, at times being described as "a less severe Arctic Monkeys“. The kooks have a very relaxed way of going about the music business, taking the ‘wait for it to come to us approach.’ They are usually shown in advertising in just black and white, but there music contradicts this boring style of clothing, as they music is very vibrant and positive, such as ‘Shine On’ and ‘Naive’ which our both very upbeat songs!

The Kooks

The kooks website homepage is very vibrant and colourful with big bold writing, which tells you that its audience area the young fun audience with the world at there feet to just relax and take what ever comes their way! In addition their website is very simple, organised and uncluttered, this relates to there very relaxed feel of the world. And there music!

The Kooks

In nearly all of The Kooks videos they have an element of performance. They never have an audience in their music videos, such as being at a venue with a crowd. They also as in advertising wear plain ordinary clothes that they would normally wear when not being publicised, they also hardly ever use bright colours in their image via their videos, but when they do they have a dimmer filter on these shots showing the image of the kooks again as being free and laid back. Further more in the music video ‘Ooh La’ they are walking around the streets of Paris playing their guitars as what looks like they are performing to the world! Not being shy, but showing the ‘old school – Rock ‘n’ Roll’ ways of performance!

The Kooks

The kooks album covers are chilled also as in both of the covers they are just standing, slouching or sitting this shows what kind of band they are! These album covers are good advertising as they are both represented in the same way with the font being the same saying ‘the kooks.’ moreover they are also stood out with the band being in black and greys with a pure white background on the album cover ‘ inside in inside out’ on the ‘Konk’ album they are lit up as the back ground is pitch black and the name of the album sticks out represented as a neon light in bright blue that cant be missed!

The Maccabees

• The Maccabees are a very colourful vibrant band that can be very creative with their advertising schemes, they always seem to wear bright colours and but stylish at the same time, these signs tell me that their target audience is about 13 to the age of 20 years old. Many of their videos have bright colours and lots of them! Even their album ‘Colour It In’ suggest playful and child like behaviour. The band I think sets off the image that they are still growing up with song titles such as ‘First Love’, ‘Dinosaurs’ and ‘Lego’ these song titles being bands memories.

The Maccabees

• The Maccabees website is very bland compared to their album’s and their music videos. As it seems to have very dull colours from a live performance happening in the background! Meaning that when it comes to business they are serious about doing well!

The Maccabees• The Maccabees use a lot of colours and childlike

behaviour in their videos as well. In addition they have lots of people involved in their videos which suggests that they are sociable, fun and enjoy getting people involved. In the video ‘Latchmere’ they use stop motion animation witch shows they’ are creative and are young spirited. They attract their audience in this way as they feel as if they can join the crowd in their video. Furthermore the Maccabee’s use of colour and childlike behaviour is created in their music video ‘X-Ray’ by their childish behaviour of drawing on the road with chalk, also an even more creative way of creating this picture with drawing pins of many different colours! There is also a part of the video where black paint covering a white canvas creating havoc, this I think shows that the childish grown up band can still be childish even once they have grownup. The Maccabees use of colour is clearly shown in their video ‘No Kinds Words’. The video’s main feature is the pattern in-between the band members. This pattern shows a playful side to the band because the shapes change into various computer games such as space invaders. Furthermore the Maccabee’s use of colour and childlike behaviour is created in their music video ‘X-Ray’.

The Maccabees

• The Maccabees album covers are completely full of colour the album ‘Wall Of Arms’ include the band in the three primary colours and green and black’ where as the album ‘Colour It In’ have different modifications to the colour schemes if they have different songs, additional songs and bonus features! This shows their creative behaviour and childish behaviour. This same theme of colours and being childlike carries on throughout all means of publicly advertising for this band with the exception of their website.

Conclusion

• Overall I think that these bands publicised themselves very well and I can learn a lot from their techniques and they are all similar but also have their differences as well, they all attract a similar audience age group, but do it in similar ways. They all advertise themselves as what they either want to be known as or what they are in real life. Florence and the machine and the Maccabees use childish behaviour
