Audience Research
Results
Survey – Q1
This question identified how old each person taking the survey was and if they
fit into my main target audience. The majority of those who answered my
survey were aged 15-19 as seen in the results above, which is very lucky as
this is the age group I wanted to target my products at. Therefore, it gives me
a good understanding of what my target audience want/expect and how I can
appeal to them specifically.
Survey – Q2
Similarly to my first question, this question further shows if the people who
answered are part of my target audience. As my target audience are female, it
is good that the majority of the people that took my survey are female. This
allows me to know how to make my products appeal to the female audience.
However, it is also very beneficial that some men did my survey too because it
also shows me their point of view. This means that I can make my product
appeal to both genders, despite my main target audience being female. This
would mean that my artist would appeal to a larger audience and could possibly
lead to more record sales.
Survey – Q3
This question also links to my target audience, as well as giving an insight into
what music genres the general public prefer as a whole. As the results show,
indie was the most popular music genre, which is good because this is the
music genre I am using, so this also shows that members of my target
audience answered my survey. Rock was close second, and pop came third.
This shows that those who answered my survey were from both niche and
mainstream audiences, which gives me a wide range of opinions. Therefore,
this enables me to make my products appeal to a bigger audience.
Survey – Q4
This question was to find out how important the audience think music
videos are by finding out how often they actually watch them themselves.
As the results show, ‘often’ and ‘sometimes’ were the most popular
responses. This shows that music videos are still consumed and are
enjoyed by audiences because they continue to watch them ‘often’.
‘Everyday’ was also a popular response so this reinforces my point, and
shows the importance of music videos.
Survey – Q5
The results of this question show that the majority stick to their favourite
music genre when it comes to watching music videos. As my target
audience are fans of the indie genre, they will be more likely to watch my
music video because it will also fall into the indie genre.
Survey – Q6
I asked this question to find out which style of music video the audience prefer.
The results show that the majority prefer either an abstract video or a video that
mixes abstract and narrative together. As my music video is going to be
abstract, these results have reassured me that I have made the right choice.
Survey – Q7
I asked this question to find out the audience’s preferred length of a music
video. This was so I knew if my song choice fit the right criteria, and wouldn’t
be too short making it forgettable or too long making it boring. The results
show that the majority prefer music videos to be 2-3 minutes. My music video
will be 3 minutes 21 seconds in length so it falls slightly over this category but
as the answer selections I gave are rounded up and not very specific (a thing I
would change if I was to do another survey), my video pretty much fits the
criteria.
Survey – Q8
I thought this was a necessary question to ask the audience because I am
including an element of performance (lip-sync) in my video and wanted to
check that I was making the right choice in doing this. The results show that
including a performance element is very popular, as 90.91% said they liked it
and the other 9.09% didn’t have a preference. Therefore, no one dislikes the
use of performance in music videos, so it is an effective thing to include.
Survey – Q9
I asked this question to see which technical element(s) audiences think are the
most important so I would know which one(s) to pay the most detail to in order
to appeal to my target audience. The results show that although
cinematography, MES, and editing are pretty close, MES comes out on top.
Therefore, I will focus on all these areas and make sure I plan and use each of
them with great detail.
Survey – Q10
It is clear from the 100% result on this question, that audiences do think music
videos help to promote artists. This is good because it shows that they
understand the importance of music videos and the impact they can have.
Furthermore, because earlier on in the survey the majority voted that they
watched music videos ‘often,’ as well as agreeing that they help to promote
artists, it shows that they must consume certain artists due to the videos they
watch, so hopefully my music video will have the same effect.

“I don't like 'cheesy' music videos i.e. boy meets girl”
“I don't like videos that are purely performance based because they get
a bit boring. I also dislike videos that use limited costumes and settings”
“Plastic pop stars”
“I don't like videos that are just a copy of existing ones, I like them to be
original and unique”
“A narrative that doesn't even link to the song”
“Lots of half-naked women dancing around for no reason”
“I hate videos that are cliché”
“I don't like it when they're repetitive”
The last 3 questions allowed me to get more in-depth and
specific answers from the audience. They gave their open
and direct point of views. In this way, the results show me
what things I should and should not incorporate in my video
in order to appeal to my target audience. Therefore, I will
take each answer on board and try to use it in some way in
my music video.
