THE SHIELD MERCY HOSPITALS AUXILIARY NEWSLETTER
Mercy Volunteers, there from the start, with a helping hand and a caring heart June 2015
Audrey Graham, Mercy Auxiliary President
Let the summer fun began! I can't believe it is already June and the year is halfway finished. I hope everyone has plans for this summer and take some time out to be with your family and friends. So much has gone on in the past six months, but through it all we are still here, and I'm grateful for each and everyone that continue volunteering each and every week. I appreciate all you do in your departments and for your commitment to support Dignity Health, Memorial and Mercy Hospital. I know some of you have had your own personal challenges, health and family issues over the past six months, but you persevered and stayed the course. And with that, I pray that these next six months are better than your last. Congratulations and best wishes to all our 2015 graduates. I celebrate with you on all of your accomplishments and wish you all the best for the future ahead as you pursue your dreams. Looking forward to seeing you at the April, May and June Birthday Celebration Luncheon,11:30a.m., Friday, June 12th at Broken Yolk on the corner of Buena Vista Rd and White Lane. Happy Father's Day, June 21, 2015. "I have found the paradox that if I love until it hurts, then there is no hurt, but only more love." Be Blessed Audrey

A Message From Alice Brown, Chairperson Volunteer Services "Just a reminder to all adult and junior volunteers that we are not to be on our cell phones while working. If you receive a phone call that you must take, step away from the desk and complete the call. No face book, playing games, texting, etc." Thanks, Alice
Robin Hunt, Supervisor Of Volunteer Services
Company Picnic - Adopt A Booth request. The Recognition Committee has started to plan the annual company picnic and I have been elected as the Chairperson for our Activity Committee working along with Bobbi Priddy, Jesus Gonzales and Margaret Pyles. We are asking for assistance from each of you to help make our picnic fun for everyone. We would like for all departments to “Adopt a Booth” at the picnic. Adopting a Booth would require that you combine efforts with like departments at each of the Bakersfield Dignity Health locations and operate a booth that will host a game or activity. As an example the Radiology department could adopt a booth to do sand art for children and have a shift for all employees in Radiology from all three hospitals to help run the booth. Not only does this give us an opportunity to maximum events but it will create great synergy allowing departments to intermingle and meet each other. *Games and activities can be geared toward either adults or children. This is what we will need from you by June 15th:
Please work with your counterparts (Activities Champions) at each of the three locations to come up with an activity or event for your booth. The picnic theme this year is a Hawaiian Luau and activities / events should be centered around that.
Speak with your employees about volunteering that day to cover a shift. Shifts should be in half hour increments in order to allow for maximum employee involvement. Picnic is scheduled for 10/3 from 2 – 6 PM at Lake Ming.
Contact me with the required items you will need to make your booth successful. You will be provided with tables, tenting and draping if necessary.
After our team has the requested information from all departments we will share the schedule and booth locations with everyone. The picnic is a great time for all of us to come together and celebrate our human kindness towards each other and our families. Our committee thanks you in advance for helping us make this picnic one of the best events of the year! Mercy and Memorial Auxiliaries can team together and have an awesome Booth.

Valuing Vacation Robin Hunt
Summer is vacation time for many. Since health care is a 365-day commitment, many are in
the midst of negotiating time to be away. There is always a give and take involved in these
negotiations simply because of the need to cover for one another.
Most people now think of vacations as a means of escape. Ford Motor Company actually
named their mini SUV "Escape", billboards carry a photo of the car and seven words:
"Escape," "Your Boss,", "Your Job," "Your World." As catchy as that advertisement is,
few of us in health care take vacations solely to escape our boss, job or world.
Our attitude is closer to the Greeks. In ancient time, travel was a way to gain wisdom. Cities
would send ambassadors to faraway places to learn from others. Passage was so slow that
the village people often waited for years to hear what the traveler had learned. Nowadays
going away to another land is not simply an attempt to break free from what binds us but a
genuine desire to learn.
Vacations serve a far more important
function than merely offering us an
opportunity to relax. They have a way of
giving us a perspective on what is important
in life and they tend to strengthen our
commitment to our work.
Some healthcare professionals are so
devoted to their work that they don't take
time for themselves. That is unfortunate.
Even the most dedicated need time away.
Everyone needs a change of scenery, and I
will be doing my colleagues, my family, and myself a favor by taking time off.
