April 2013 was quite an eventful month from

Rotary perspective. Being the magazine

month, PP Dr Sanjiv Chugh in his X-press

column had interesting topic for discussion.

And the question posed was 'don't tell us how

good Golden Orange is. Tell us where it's NOT

good'. The opinion makers were the stalwarts of GO having presided over

the job with élan. The GO was asked to take AGNI PARIKSHA to be judged

by these eminent personalities.

And it did come out with flying colours.

Ironically Incoming President Prashant and Vice President Sohrab asked

me to be Editor of this prestigious magazine. Have they found in me,

'Where it's NOT good'. Ok…time will tell. But honestly it takes lot of

courage, conviction and stupidity to accept this profile. It's such a fine

tuned product. Full colour excellent paper quality, loved by all with

wonderful mix of Rotary and general information, something for everybody.

In fact the district awards committee gave it the status of Lata Mangeshkar.

While she voluntarily withdrew herself from Filmfare awards, GO was

considered too good for it to be in reckoning.

Some interesting observations were made in X-press. Few wanted it to be

a collector's item with high shelf life. I had only one magazine in mind with

very long shelf life. I mean National Geographic Later I came to know

about the second one as well. The Readers' Digest. Later someone

mentioned about third one that he thought was the 'first one'I had in mind.;-)

Nonetheless…Team GOs endeavor will be to maintain the numero uno

position of this wonderful magazine. We will try to incorporate features that

will be interesting, inspiring and informative. Rotary is all about teamwork

and my sincere request to all readers to give honest feedback and share

information. Till next time…Happy reading

AS PER ROTARY CALENDER, AUGUST IS DESIGNATED AS MEMBERSHIP MONTH.THE PRESIDENT & THE BOARD REQUEST ALL MEMBERS TO CONTRIBUTE

IN WHICH EVER MANNER POSSIBLE

One of the most valuable contributions anyone can make to another person's learning is constructive feedback. It is an essential part of effective learning. It helps a person understand the subject and gives him/her clear guidance on how to improve their work. An organisation like Rotary is no different and with vibrant membership of 350, there is no dearth of people with honest and strong views in our club. It is not just the magazine, you can voice your opinion on the website, thru mail or at the club meetings. Rotary being a social movement needs to reinvent every day to be relevant in fast changing world. The members are the eyes and ears thru which club responds to the needs of the society and communities. Unless this information is shared, club will not be in position to do that. You may have great idea, an excellent concept, a wonderful speaker who can add value to fellow members…do share that information. Rotary is one of the most open-minded organisation and we are sure that if found worthy, the idea will surely be considered.

Our own Rotarian Rachna Singh is the force behind in organizing blood donation camp at St. Ursula Girls High School. She is always an active participant and initiates in organizing lot of activities for our club. In spite of her busy schedule she never misses an opportunity to serve the Rotary cause. This camp was a multi-committee camp. Blood donation was organized for parents of the school students and began at 9.00 AM. It was inspiring to see students volunteering to direct unwilling parents to donate blood with a good success rate.

CREATIVITY IN FOCUS – SAMIHA KHANDAUGHTER OF HABEEB AND SMITA KHANI am a 12th grader and have been into classical music for a long time, it was in first std that I took my first music lessons and since then I never really looked back. I was addicted… ! I gave 5 hindustani classical music exams after which I had to stop due to academic pressures. but these 10 years of learning did change my perspective towards music altogether. Music for me is no longer just some words put into a nice tune...it is something which refreshes a person beyond boundaries. I personally believe and understood that a proper musical training is an essential aspect of a child's life, just as sports is to physical health, music is to mental health. moreover talking about classical music …..it sensitizes you to a spectrum of emotions as the ragas portray... it teaches you the minute details of everyday life which any person may not be able to tutor… to be a little less philosophical it basically enriches you in a way different than any school would….it might obviously not teach you to add 1 and 1 to get a 2 but surely explains you the finer sensitive aspects of life , which , in todays growing materialistic , world are very important.

LITTLE HEARTS – TARONISH RANASON OF MEHERNOSH & NILUFER RANAHello everyone! I am Taronish Rana, 7 years old studying in class II, Centre Point School. My hobbies are cycling, skating, gaming, cricket and i hold the green belt in karate and still learning...and yes! I want to do all of this with the one i love the most MAC, my dog. He is a pure breed black dachshund. He is one year old. We have always had big dogs at home. This is the first time we bought this small bundle of energy who matches my spirit ;-). I enjoy playing with him. He greets me first thing in the morning with a snug of his wet nose. I love snuggling with him, talking to him and he is my comfort when i have no one to play with. He loves eating Parle-G biscuits with me. It's his favorite and mine too! He follows me wherever I go and I enjoy it too. I have two sisters and Mac compensates as a brother to me. He is very protective of me and likewise. I think everyone should keep a dog; they are the best companions one can ever have!

INDIAN FILM INDUSTRY – RAUNAK BADJATE SON OF ANUJ & PRITI BADJATEIndian Film industry has traveled long distance in last few decades. It is not only a source of entertainment but also a very effective medium to spread meaningful message to the society by large. Beyond this the industry also has the credit of contributing significantly to the economic growth of the country. The event of globalization has made it possible for Indian cinema to reach every corner of the world and receive appreciation and subscription from most of the countries. Movies like “Chak De India” and “Bhag Mikha Bhag” have played a very important role in motivating and promoting sports in the country. The film has also opened doors of employment for large numbers of youngsters and offers opportunities to become rich and famous like the legendary Amitabh Bachhan and Shahrukh Khan. But oftenly good things come with a baggage, commercialization of Indian cinema has led to exhibition of bad things like smoking, drinking and excessive influence of western culture having deteriorating effect on the culture amongst the youth. In the end I sign off with a hope that Indian Cinema presents meaningful and inspiring movies to have a positive impact on the youth.

An App(s) a day …….

QR Code Scanner

All of you must have noticed weird looking graphics on bottom-right of front page of the

GO. Similar graphics keep cropping up on newspapers, magazines and everywhere.

They are nothing but special type of Barcodes and can be used to read data using

your mobiles. Most modern phones with camera can scan the barcodes today. To

install app, just open website f2k.mobi or scan.me directly on your phone or search

for QR Code scanner on App Store.

Coming back to the QR Code on front-page, it's something which GO Editor likes to

call as “GO in Pocket”, because you can take that small QR code in your wallet and

whenever you want to read that particular issue, you have to just scan the code and

GO will open on your phone or tablet. Also it makes sharing GO with your friends easy.

QR codes make it very easy to share many types of information like text message,

website address or complete contact info. For example you can scan following QR

Code for contact info of our President:

Glide (Free on iPhone and Android)

Glide is the world's first video walkie talkie.

It combines the personality of video chat with the

convenience of texting, allowing you to broadcast

private video messages to friends with just a single

tap. If they're available, they can see you live as

you broadcast; if they're busy or offline, they can

watch or respond later - just like a text message. All

messages are stored on the cloud so they don't

take up any space on your phone and can be rewatched at any time.

IFTTT (Free on iPhone)

IFTTT (If This, Then That) lets you automate your online life. You can combine usage

of multiple online services and make it happen automatically. For example: You like a

photo on Instagram and it gets automatically saved in your Dropbox or you add a new

contact in your phone and an email is automatically sent saying it was nice to know

you etc. etc.

You can create these actions yourself or choose from various options already

available. It's like programming your phone without actually programming

Spy Calc (Free and Paid versions for iPhone and iPad)

Spy Calc is a calculator which James Bond would like to use. It's a normal working

calculator app but you punch in your secret number combination and you can view

and save photos and videos which no one can ever see. You can upload photos via

browser on computer too.

Paid version costs $1.99 and has advanced PDF viewer, document management,

sound recorder, and advanced photo features. Paid version also has private camera

and video recorder.

Locket (Free on Android)

Get paid for unlocking your phone.

Locket is free and pays you just for having ads on your lock screen. With one swipe,

you can either open the ad or unlock your phone the way you always do. No matter

what, you get paid. - Sachin Palewar
