A Music Garden will soon be drawing guests down the hill from Glenwood Garden’s Highfield Discovery Garden to the Highfield Meadow with the sweet sound of percussion instruments and an eye-catching, fanciful stage. Featuring a winding path in the shape of a Treble Clef, this stroll garden offers opportunities for interactive, self-guided play and formal programs.

This space was originally conceived by Becky Reed who was formerly a Naturalist at Glenwood Gardens and tragically passed away in 2017. True to her vision, this space is designed to excite and inspire with its whimsical and accessible stage, collection of professional quality outdoor instruments, plantings of the caliber you have come to expect from Glenwood Gardens, and seating that allows you to relax and let all of your senses soak in the surroundings.

A grant opportunity to obtain funding for a large portion of the project costs became available this year through the NatureWorks program administered by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources. The timeline for this grant has pushed construction of the project to the spring of 2022. To allow for easier establishment, the plantings will be installed in the fall of 2022.

Great Parks is in the process of gathering input from staff and the public, and will work to incorporate ideas into the design of the project over the next couple of months. Keep your eyes and ears open for more on this exciting addition to Highfield Discovery Garden!

What is your favorite volunteer activity? I volunteer at Glenwood Gardens and have two favorite

volunteer activities. One is working

with the model trains, and the other

is helping with the campfire and

marshmallows at the luminary walk

at Glenwood Gardens.

When you’re not at Great Parks, where might we find you? Most

likely, you would find me in my

wood shop, making pens, jewelry

boxes, trivets, or whatever is the

item of the moment.

What might we be surprised to know about you? I served three

years in the US Army as

an electronics instructor at Fort Belvoir, VA. I also ran searchlights

along the Tidal Basin in Washington

DC during the Cherry Blossom Festival during those three years.

Who in the world would you most like to share a meal with?

I would have loved to share a meal

with any of the astronauts from

John Glenn to the current

astronauts aboard the Space Station.
