! For many of us this month was a classic glass half full versus glass half empty moment.  Tough decisions were required that on the short term were and are painful.  Hopefully these decisions will allow the Department to ultimately thrive and grow in a direction better able to compete in the future.  All of us need to dig deep and look at ways to further the development of the Department.  We can and will succeed.   If any of you have questions and most importantly ideas please email me or talk to me.  Have a great Labor Day weekend!

Four students who worked in the Division of Child Development, in the HOT DOCS and Early Steps programs, received their PhD degrees on August 6 at the Ice Palace. They are:

Dr. Ariz Rojas (Psychology), Dr. Mulu Mogos (Nursing), Dr. Emily Shaffer-Hudkins (psychology), and Dr. Marissa Feldman (Psychology). Congratulations to each of you!

! Dr. Marisa Couluris has been invited to discuss USF Pediatric Pulmonology as a future Primary Ciliary Dyskinesia (PCD) Clinical Care Center at the PCD Foundationʼs meeting to be held November 2nd in Anaheim, CA. This meeting will serve as an initial discussion about what can be done to move PCD research and care forward, which in turn will dramatically increase our knowledge of PCD and improve the lives of affected individuals.

! USF Pediatrics currently has over ten patients taking part in PCD studies with at least five others awaiting an initial evaluation.

! The Ronald McDonald Care Mobile has been awarded a grant in the amount of $12,500 from the BJʼs Wholesale Club Charitable Foundation. This marks the second time that BJʼs has give to the Care Mobile. The first was awarded in 2009 for $10,000.

“I hope that all of us – the Thai students, as well as USF faculty and our student residents – get a broader appreciation for medicine around the world,” Dr. Rodriguez said. “That we learn about our differences as well as how alike medicine is in our different countries.”

! Dr. Lisa Rodriguez was quoted in an August 19th article featured on the USF Health homepage. The article focussed on the Klasko International Exchange Program that allows USF students and medical students from Thailand to travel abroad in order to learn from each otherʼs programs.

Dr. Brian Knox has recently been appointed Associate Program Director for the Internal Medicine - Pediatrics Residency Program. Dr. Knox had already taken an active role in integrating the use of technology into the program and clinics and has been a wonderful addition this year to teaching faculty. Congratulations Dr. Knox!

! Also in Med-Peds news, the program is going to partner with Catholic Charities by serving as a new continuity site for their Hispanic Migrant Worker Population in Dover.  They will be staffing the San Jose Mission clinic the first Friday of every month from 3pm-6pm. This is a great opportunity to serve an underserved population and address some chronic health care needs such as HTN, DM, etc. The residents will also use this opportunity to develop community education and activities such as nutrition and educational counseling.

PEDIATRICResidents and Faculty participated at a number of health fairs around the Bay area during the past month.

The August 13th fair was at Blake High School. In attendance were Cary Aungst, Kim Chau, Fateema Turay, Tracy Burton, Kevin Whitworth, Marsha Ramsay, Sharon Dabrow and 4th year student Jenny Kaplan (not pictured). They performed over 200 free physicals during the event!

On August 20th the fair was held at 34th St. Church in Tampa. Over 60 children received physicals. Pictured are Dr. Soylu with a patient and Drs. Indriolo, Grams, Gayahan, Yalamanchili, Kelly, Bui, Dabrow and Judd. First year medical students also took part.

Neonatology News

! Dr. Rubin was interviewed on Fox 13 News on July 25 about the rise in babies born to women addicted to prescription drugs. He described the situation at the Tampa General Hospital NICU and in Florida generally. Dr. Rubin is Co-Chair of the Florida Consortium on Prescription Drug Use in Pregnancy that works with the state Attorney Generalʼs office on this important issue.

! He also attended the 3rd Annual Meeting of the States Monitoring Assisted Reproductive Technologies (SMART) Consortium. SMART is a CDC-funded contract with the Departments of Health in Florida, Massachusetts and Michigan. SMART uses large population databases to determine pregnancy and neonatal outcome. Dr. Rubin is Scientific Lead in Florida. Dr. Russell Kirby (Marrell Endowed Chair, Community & Family Health and Joint Appointment in

Neonatology), is the Florida Epidemiology Consultant. He also attended the Annual Meeting.

! Dr. Rubin was also Visiting Professor of Neonatology, Michigan State University College of Human Medicine, Lansing, MI, on August 17-18. He spoke to the Department of Pediatrics on, “Nutrition for high-risk neonates: lesions from evolutionary biology and genetics.”

! Finally, Dr. Rubin is among the many USF Pediatrics physicians named to the Best Doctors 2011-2012, which will be published in the September issue of Tampa Bay Metro Magazine.

! Jennifer Takagishi, General Peds attending, Deanna Indriolo, 2nd year resident, and Marsha Ramsay, first year resident each spent a day as a medical volunteer at "Camp for Champions" in mid August.  This program is a collaborative effort between Derrick Brooks Charities, the Department of Children and Families (DCF), and Hillsborough Kids.  The goal of the camp was to educate foster children about topics ranging from how to deal with peer pressure to the importance of education and how to persevere beyond one's circumstances to achieve success. Derrick Brooks, several other professional athletes, and Governor Rick Scott took time to speak to the children. Both residents were on-hand to assist with medical complications that arose throughout the day and had a great time with the kids.

! Dr. Sleasman spoke on diagnosis and management of Primary Immunodeficiency Disease (PID) and diagnosis and management of Hereditary Angiodema (HAE) at the Alabama Society of Allergy & Immunology Annual Post Graduate Board Exam Review Course on Saturday, Aug. 6.

! Dr. Elena Perez was promoted from Assistant Professor to Associate Profess on August 7.

Two posters were presented at the Florida Allergy, Asthma & Immunology Society meeting held in Amelia Island, FL on the weekend of July 8.

! Dr. Elizalde presented her poster abstract titled, “CD21-/low B Cells Are Increased in Both Common Variable Immune Deficiency (CVID) and Specific Antibody Deficiency (SAD).”

! Dr. Nguyen also presented a poster titled, “Elevation of Soluble CD14 levels Supports Chronic Innate Immune Activation in Subjects with CVID, XLA, and SLE Compared to Healthy Subjects.”

Around Tampa Bay

Pediatrics’ Growing Family

Congratulations to Dr. Megan Toufexis and family for the arrival of new baby, Munroe Avery Butz. Munroe was born on August 8 and both he and mom are doing well!

The annual Tampa Bay Dragon Boat Races event was held the first week of August in the bay directly behind Tampa General Hospital. Dr. Nelson took some pictures of the event that he would like to share with everyone.

If you really enjoy one of the many events that takes place in the Tampa Bay area, please send in a report with a few pictures so that we can spread the word in the Pediatrics Newsletter. With so much going on in the region it shouldnʼt be difficult to find one you love!
