Life has never looked better!

Westlake is known as a community of successful businesses. The competitive spirit of those businesses came to life last week as the City of Westlake hosted its annual Corporate Challenge - a week-long series of fun activities staged at various venues around town. Highlight of the week was the Cardboard Boat races that culminated the competition at the Westlake Recre-ation Center swimming pool Friday evening. Won by Q-Lab, the Canterbury Road manufacturing company that also took the overall team title, the event brought cheers and laughs from the crowded arena. “Westlake is known for its successful businesses,” said Mayor Dennis Clough as he presented trophies to end the evening. “But who says you can’t also have a little fun with your friends and families?” The City is grateful to all the companies that took part in Corporate Challenge week, especially those who provid-ed more than 120 backpacks stuffed with school supplies. Donations came from Applied Companies, Bilt-

Avon Lake High SchoolAnnounces New Principal

During a special meeting of the Avon Lake City Schools Board of Education July 31, members approved a one-year contract for Joseph J. Mueller to become the new principal at Avon Lake High School.** A veteran educator, Mueller most recently served as principal at Brecks-ville-Broadview Heights High School. Additional career experiences include teaching, coaching and administrative positions in Cleveland, West Geauga and Perry school districts. Mueller replaces Dr. Brad Cocco who will continue to re-main in the school district as a teacher at Troy Intermediate School. As a principal, Mueller has pursued best-practice professional growth with internationally-renowned researchers for more than 20 years. He is committed to in-spiring everyone to “get better every day.” “Joe has an outstanding record and has been hired to lead Avon Lake High School forward in a positive manner, and to be a positive contributor to the district leadership team,” said Robert Scott, Avon Lake City Schools superintendent. Mueller received bachelor and master degrees in history and political science from Kent State University. His educational administration licensure is from Cleveland State University. As a former Southwestern Conference principal, Mueller is familiar with the excel-lence of the Avon Lake City Schools and is excited for the opportunity to contribute as principal of Avon Lake High School. Mueller and his wife, Renee, reside in Lodi where they raise alpacas and quarter horses. The couple have two children and five grandchildren.

would be a great idea to have a card making station set-up in the surgery waiting room area one day in July. At the station, all were in-vited to pitch in and make ‘get well soon’ cards for patients and family members at the hospital that day. It proved to be a great day as Murray Ridge students and clients were joined by many visitors to the hospital to bring their thoughtful idea to life. It was a wonderful way to give back to the community. “We only wish you could be here every day!,” said the Mer-cy team. The Murray Ridge Pro-duction Center, operated by the Lorain County Board of Developmental Disabilities, has provided services that assist Lorain County residents with developmental disabilities since 1965. More than 2,000 individuals are supported by Murray Ridge each year. Their opportunity/vocational centers provide working opportunities to adults in the program. They have sites in Lorain, Elyria and Oberlin.

The Murray Ridge Center set out with a goal at the be-ginning of the year to do “fifty acts of giving back,” at the start of 2017. As of today, they have completed 109 acts around the county, and they are still going strong. One of the initiatives was created by Jeff Colatruglio, recreation specialist for Murray Ridge. It’s probably not on many calendars, but August is “What Will Be Your Legacy Month.” So it’s a good time to think about the type of legacy you’d like to leave. On a practical level, establishing your legacy means providing your family and the charitable organizations you support with the resources you’d like them to have. So, you’ll want to work with your legal profes-sional to create the appropriate documents, such as a will, living trust, power of attorney and so on. You’ll also want to communicate your plans to your loved ones. You don’t want anyone to be unpleasantly surprised when it’s time to settle your estate. And don’t forget to review your plans as your life changes. For example, if you’ve remarried, you may want to change the beneficiary designations on your IRA, 401(k) and other retirement accounts – if left untouched, these designations may even supersede the instructions left in your will. With careful planning, and by making the right moves, you can create the type of legacy you desire – one that can benefit your loved ones far into the future.
