A MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Welcome to the 2012-13 school year! We will open our doors this year with around 2,950 students. The campus is buzzing and many activities have already begun. Our Band has been practicing in preparation for the upcoming season and they sound great! Football and volleyball have started and it is exciting to see the new season off to such a great start.

On September 20 at 6:30 PM, the Reagan PTA will host our annual “Open House Greenback Night.” Please mark your calendars so that you will be sure not to miss this main event.

PTA NEWSBy: Mrs. Cynthia Tello, PTA President

After a long, hot summer, it’s time for the excitement of a new school year! Whether you are sending a student off to kindergarten, middle school, high school or college, August is an exciting but busy time.

Now that you have stocked the backpacks, survived two-a-day practices and started your school-night routines, I hope you can all make time to get involved in some of the many, many activities going on at Reagan. From Rattler Round Up to Project Graduation, there are numerous events that you can attend either as a spectator, as a participant or as a volunteer. I encourage all of you to get involved in Reagan High School. Show your children that their school is important to you. Meet the faculty and the administrators – they are very dedicated! Learn your way around our campus and see all the great resources that are available to our children. Get to know other Reagan students and parents. Get involved to be a part of the success of the Reagan community.

I believe the best way to get involved is through volunteering. Whether it’s baking a pie for the faculty, hosting a pregame team dinner, or serving on the Project Graduation committee, there are volunteer opportunities for everyone at Reagan. Every sport, every club or group, including PTA, relies on parent volunteers to achieve their goals. Look for the Partners in Education (PIE) Form in the Welcome Packets. If you are new to NEISD, or new to volunteering on campus, follow the instructions on the PIE Form to complete the criminal history record check required by NEISD. To receive information on volunteer opportunities that fit your interests and your schedule, complete the PIE Form and return it with the Welcome Packets.

As I begin this year as the new PTA President, I would like to thank all of the new and returning parents who have already become involved by volunteering for the PTA Executive Board and others who helped make Prep Days a success. I have enjoyed working with all of these wonderful parents and hope to work with many more of you throughout the year.

Reagan Theatre’s New Season Brings to Life Works of Harper Lee, Jane Austen

By: C. StierThis year’s exciting theatrical line-up at Reagan High offers literary classics and a boisterous, 1920s-themed musical production. And in November, the Theatre Department presents for the first time an innovative, double treat -- a choice of two compelling plays offered the same nights at one location.

The season opens with Harper Lee’s To Kill A Mockingbird, presented October 10 -13 at 7 PM in the auditorium. This American classic explores issues of race, injustice and societal expectations. A perennial high school English class favorite, the production will offer students, as well as community members, the chance to experience a moving dramatization of this Pulitzer Prize winning novel.

In November, theatre-goers will face a delicious dilemma: How to choose between two very different shows on two different Reagan High stages at the same time. One talented cast will transport audiences to 19th Century England with Pride and Prejudice, based on the much-loved Jane Austen novel, presented on the auditorium stage. On the same nights, Robert Harling’s Steel Magnolias will be performed in the more intimate Black Box theatre. Set in Louisiana, this comedy-drama explores themes of friendship, loss and hidden strength. Both productions will be presented November 14 -17 at 7 PM How to decide? The best option, of course, is to attend on two different evenings to enjoy both.

In February, Reagan’s Theatre, Orchestra, and Choir departments team up for the Spring musical, Thoroughly Modern Millie. The production follows the adventures of Millie, a young woman of the 1920s who bobs her hair and shortens her skirts to become “thoroughly modern.” In preparation for the show's energetic tap and other dance numbers, dedicated theatre students attended weekly dance lessons over the summer led by accomplished student choreographers Hilary Rubio and Blake Jackson. The musical runs February 6 – 9 at 7 PM in the auditorium.

Each year the Reagan Theatre Department, led by Theatre Director Mrs. Gloria Robinson and Technical Director Mr. James Kaiser, brings outstanding dramas, comedies and musicals to community audiences. For ticket information and purchases, phone (210) 482-2200 ext.248 or email [email protected]

As a new school year is soon approaching, there are several tasks that the Reagan HS choir is preparing to tackle! This year we are honored to be invited to walk the field at Rattler Roundup during the pep rally so we can display to our peers and members of this community what we have to offer. Soundsations!, our show choir at Reagan, is thrilled to be performing the National Anthem at the pep rally and has also been busy this summer practicing some of their repertoire and polishing choreography. Our choir leadership team has been working incredibly hard to plan our Back to Choir Night. This wonderful event is sure to make both new and old members feel welcome as we play games, get to know each other, and have fun right before we kick off the new school year! Our choir leadership team is inspired and motivated to make a positive difference in our organization this year after attending the Texas Choral Directors Association High School Student Day on July 25. We learned the qualities of a true leader, rehearsal tips, and the benefits that come from stepping out of one’s comfort zone in order to do what is right. Every member in every choir is valued and accepted, because there is so much beauty that lies within the similarities and differences between us. We want each individual in our program to let their personality, in its splendor, foibles and eccentricities, to shine through! In addition, many of our students also attended choir camps all over Texas this summer to familiarize themselves with the All-State music for this year. These camps enable the students to learn the music as well as feel comfortable and confident singing the various challenging pieces that will first be auditioned on September 29. We are very excited to see how successful our students will be this year. Our program looks forward to stepping into a new school year and taking one giant leap into the process and steps we take to accomplish new goals, form new friendships, and make lasting memories while doing the one thing we do best: singing!

Reagan OrchestraBy: Mrs. Katherine Johnston, ROBC Secretary

REAGAN ORCHESTRA IS PREPARED!

Bring on the Fall: the Reagan Rattler Orchestra is fully prepared for a new year of challenging music and activities! Seventy students took part in the Orchestra Summer Camp in August, with four musicians from the San Antonio Symphony working with them on fingering and bowing techniques to get just the right sounds out of their wonderful string instruments.

There were new music reading sessions, rehearsals, and team-building fun in the gym. The week was capped off by a pool party at Gold’s Gym in Roger’s Ranch.

The Annual Rattler Orchestra Extravaganza will be held at 6:30 PM on Thursday, September 6. There will be a meal in the cafeteria (on sale through the Reagan Orchestra Booster Club) with a short presentation by the ROBC Board, followed by the first concert of the 2012-2013 school year in the Fine Arts auditorium.

The orchestra is excited to have two harpists added to its rich, full sound this year. The first full concert for fall is on October 23 at 7:00 PM and is free and open to the public. For more information, call the Orchestra room at (210)482-2200 ext. 365.
