The theme for the current student forum series is “Teaching from the Heart: Cultural Consciousness in Our Classrooms and Beyond.” Featured speaker Dr. Ameenah Shakir, associate professor of history at Florida A & M Univer- sity, provided critical and relevant rhetoric through her lecture enti- tled “Double Consciousness as Pedagogy.” The focal point of Dr. Shakir’s presentation involved the pioneer- ing pedagogical efforts of African- American women in the healthcare field. After expertly tracing the history of ill-guided stereotypes that, not very recently, pervaded the medical profession concern- ing the bodies of black men and women, Shakir recounted the medical and pedagogical achieve- ments of Drs. Matilda Evans, Elizabeth Hill, Virginia Alexander, and Helen Dickens. The triumphs of Dr. Dickens, along with those of her predeces- sors and contemporaries, offer an exemplary demonstration of double consciousness as pedagogy to current and future educators. Dr. Patricia Green-Powell, inter- im dean of the College of Educa- tion, reminded attendees that 21st -century classrooms are in need of “teacher-leaders” who are simultaneously exceptional and generous. Following Dr. Shakir’s presentation, students and faculty discussed how double consciousness might inform their practice as educators. Subsequent forums will further explore “cultural conscious- ness” and what it means for COE graduates as they begin their professional journeys. COE kicks off spring forum series CEC springs into 2014: new hours, more tutors, and textbooks for rent Every student majoring in education is aware, or ought to be aware, that the Candidate Empowerment Center (CEC) offers a computer lab, printing, FTCE study materials, and tutoring all free of charge. With its new location in the Gore Edu- cation Complex (GEC-A 211), the CEC is more accessible than ever to students, faculty, and staff. In order to uphold the exceptional per- formance and efficiency of the CEC, a valid FAMU Rattler Card is now required for any guest wishing to access CEC equip- ment. We proudly announce that the CEC has procured copies of textbooks utilized in the following courses: EDF 3430, RED 3013, and RED 4519. Textbooks are now availa- ble for check-out with a valid FAMU Rat- tler Card. Books, CD-ROMs, and other preparatory materials for the FTCE are also available for check-out. Any and all overdue materials result in an automatic hold on the student’s university account. The CEC staff has grown to include a total of nine tutors. After completing a diagnostic test for their respective por- tion of the FTCE, students have the op- tion of scheduling sessions with a CEC tutor. The stellar success rate of the cen- ter inclines students of every classifica- tion to return to the CEC as they matric- ulate through the College of Education.
