How did InsidePSI come about? When the collaboration working group got together to talk about ways in which collaboration at PSI could be improved, there were lots of good ideas put on the table. But one idea—which had come up before—was that an organization-wide newsletter might help knit us all together more. Sort of like a family. The idea resonated among all of us. As the COO and working group lead, what do you expect this newsletter will achieve? When I travel, most people want to know about what everyone in the network is doing. And they are not referring so much to the business side of things as they are about the people. Promotions. New arrivals. Departures. Reorganizations. Memorable moments—the highs and the lows. So the idea is that this newsletter will help fill that gap. I expect that it will make the widely dispersed PSI world feel just a touch more intimate. In it, we can learn more about each other. To make it work, all of need to help out. So, please, don't be afraid to contribute. To set the tone of the newsletter (relevant, engaging and fun) tell us something about yourself -that people may not know: I have, for many years, brought (snuck) my dog to the office. Grace used to get angry with me about doing that (sorry Grace) and so I had to, in the end, keep this practice restricted to weekends, holidays, days when Grace was on the road, or like a few a weeks ago, during a snow day. I call her my "brand ambassador." If you ever notice a small bowl in my office on the floor by the door, well, that's my dog's water bowl. I keep it filled just in case. - Peter Clancy, Chief Operating Officer MARCH 2014 EDITION: 1 WWW.PSI.ORG Welcome to InsidePSI ! What’s your story?

To set the tone of the newsletter (relevant, engaging and fun) tell us something about yourself -that people may not know:

I have, for many years, brought (snuck) my dog to the office.

The PSI Somaliland team has embarked on an exciting venture to strengthen the capacity of the government to regulate the health sector and ultimately, improve health services for Sara. A bit of background: The government of Somaliland has tried repeatedly to regulate the private health sector, notably with the introduction of the National Health Practitioners Council (NHPC), but has failed to achieve significant progress. Most private health practitioners in Somaliland fear they won’t pass the stringent registration process legally imposed by NHPC and therefore avoid any regulation.

In response, NHPC and PSI Somaliland recently agreed to work together, jointly driving regulation forward in the private sector and improving the perception of quality at the social franchise network, BulshoKaab. Monty Hermann (SOCIALCAST), Social Marketing Technical Advisor and Communications Officer, Ahmed Suleiman (SOCIALCAST), led a DELTA session with NHPC to help design a 2014 communication strategy in order to increase demand for self-registration amongst health practitioners. The NHPC was fully engaged in the DELTA process and expressed interest in sharing work with PSI Somaliland in the near future. PSI Somaliland agreed to pilot the registration process with 20 top-performing BulshoKaab pharmacies. This partnership serves as an excellent example of the Total Market Approach (TMA) in action!

THE PROJECT

In October of 2013, a 60-day national campaign called “CAMPAIGN CLASS” was launched here in BURUNDI. “CLASS” is a concept that brands healthy behaviors and actions to encourage young people to take accountability of their future, their health, and to protect themselves and their loved ones, by using the Prudence CLASS condoms. We strived to use new and innovative approaches. One of our strategies was to utilize local Burundian celebrities to become ambassadors. As part of our campaign, we executed five concerts where famous Burundian singers performed. The main objective was to put into song our messages of what it meant to be “CLASS.”

WHAT HAPPENED?

During the first concert, instead of promoting the behaviors of what it meant to be CLASS, the singers solely promoted our condom brand.

WHAT WERE THE CONSEQUENCES?

We produced many educational materials, such as brochures, but once out in the field, our messages contradicted those of the performers. Overall, the messages were not aligned.

WHAT WOULD YOU DO DIFFERENTLY NEXT TIME?

I would ensure that all partners fully understand the main objective, so that we’re all on the same page. Prior to embarking on anything, I would guarantee that they fully understand their role in turning objectives into reality and make certain that everyone is working together to achieve these set objectives.

WHAT DID YOU LEARN THAT YOU’VE BEEN ABLE TO APPLY MOVING FORWARD?

I learned that those who “walk together, walk surely” and that by having a common understanding you in turn lay the foundation for achieving your goal.
