TDA hosted Freshmen Day at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio (UTHSCSA) on July 11, 2013. The event included a catered lunch, a short presentation about the benefits of TDA membership and organized dentistry, games, door prizes,

and a meet-and-greet with TDA members.

At UTHSCSA, 100 incoming freshmen dental students attended the event. TDA Committee on the New Dentist (CND) members Drs Larry Dougherty of San Antonio and Ernesto Trevino of McAllen, and TDA Board member Dr Joshua Austin of San Antonio led the presentation. San Antonio District Dental Society (SADDS) President Dr Mickey Calverley spoke about the importance of becoming involved in local dental societies, and Emily Moers, a senior dental student, spoke about the new TDA Student Organization (TDASO) and the American Student Dental Association (ASDA). TDA and SADDS staff members were on hand to answer students’ questions after the presentation.

One hundred freshmen dental students attended TDAFreshmen Day on July 11, 2013 at UTHSCSA.

The TDA Smiles Foundation (TDASF) recently awarded scholarships to 2 first-year dental students at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio Dental School.

Recipients are Ray Caesar from San Antonio, a member and representative of the American Student Dental Association (ASDA), and Alexander Ling from Houston, who currently serves on the UTHSCSA Faculty and is an active member of the Student Relations Committee. Caesar received his undergraduate degree from Duke University, and Ling received his undergraduate degree from the University of Texas at Austin.

The International College of Dentists USA Section selected the TDA’s publications for 2 journalism awards.

The Texas Dental Journal received the Golden Pen, Division 1 Award for its outstanding series of “Oral Cancer” articles in the May 2012 issue. Smart Mouth™, the Association’s newest patient publication, received the Special Citation Award for its unusual concept and presentation in the Summer/Fall 2012 issue.

The awards will be presented to TDA Editor Dr Stephen R. Matteson at the annual meeting of the American Association of Dental Editors in October 2013 in New Orleans, Louisiana.

ATDAVolunteersatAmarilloTMOMApril Cobb, Alliance of the TDA Publicity Secretary

In June 2013, volunteers from the Alliance of the TDA (ATDA) helped dentists, dental students, and dental personnel from all over Texas provide 857 patients with more than $664,000 worth of donated services during a 2-day 40-chair Texas Mission of Mercy in Amarillo.

The ATDA is a connected and active group of dental spouses that supports many aspects of dentistry. ATDA serves individual communities promoting well-being of the dental family, dental health education, and legislative projects, and often collaborate for state-wide events.

ATDA members helped set up, welcome patients, engage children in dental education activities, work chair-side, host a dinner for volunteers to kick off the event, and choreograph the logistics of patient flow.

The Alliance extends special recognition and sincere thanks to the following members who made this TMOM a success!

Last year the TDA Board of Directors invited Sarah Sladek, CEO of XYZ University and author of The End of Membership As We Know It, to Austin to work with the Task Force on Relevancy and offer suggestions on how TDA can evolve to meet the changing needs of its membership.

Ms Sladek reviewed TDA, its governance structure, and met with members to better understand TDA’s strengths and weaknesses. The results of her analysis were provided to the TDA Board of Directors and the TDA House of Delegates.

Most of her report focused on “the value of membership.” We must show why TDA is worth the money and time of today’s busy doctors. We must show why being a TDA member makes you a better business owner and practitioner. We must show how membership can make a difference in your life.

TDA provides a great return on investment through our efforts on behalf of the profession at the Capitol and through access to educational programs and information. While the impact on the profession is obvious, it is also incalculable. What is the dollar value of these services?

As I prepare for my trek to South Padre Island and the Dentists Who Care Conference, and I do mean a trek considering it is 802 miles from Amarillo. I can’t help but wonder how much a dentist from the panhandle has in common with a dentist in “the valley”?

The majority of dentists in the valley are heavily involved in Medicaid; we for the most part are not. The valley dentists have border issues with a foreign country, we do not (unless you consider Oklahoma a foreign country).

The valley dentists have one season; hot and our seasons would be described as windy with frequent ,temperature changes.

However, I believe we have one very important thing in common, we really care for our patients. Through the multiple TDA Smiles Foundation Texas Mission of Mercy events across the state to the valley’s Mobile Dental Unit that visited 16 schools and treated more than 450 children last year, I can say that the dentists in Texas truly care for people in need of dental care.

It is something we can all be proud of – and something we should be proud of.

TonyaFuqua,DDS–Southlake“I love kiddos. They’re my first passion.”

When Dr Tonya Fuqua of Southlake participated in the American Dental Association’s (ADA) inaugural Give Kids a Smile (GKAS) campaign in 2002, she was hooked. She thought their local community knocked it out of the park. She is a champion for the underdog; a woman willing to take on anything, especially when that someone is a child.

Dr Fuqua received her dental degree from the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio Dental School. She is a general dentist and is married to prosthodontist Steven Fuqua, DDS, MS. They practice together in Southlake and have 2 daughters, 11-year-old Sabrina and 8-year-old Courtney.

When Sabrina was a baby, Dr Fuqua noticed sores in her mouth. The Fuquas visited many physicians trying to find answers. “We were ‘frequent fliers’ at Cook Children’s Medical Center,” says Dr Fuqua. “We

couldn’t figure out why Sabrina’s hemoglobin counts were down; she wouldn’t eat and she wasn’t thriving.”

At the age of 3, doctors at Cook’s diagnosed Sabrina with an aggressive form of Crohn’s disease, a chronic inflammatory condition of the gastrointestinal tract.

Seeing her young daughter struggle with a painful disease, Dr Fuqua started a support group for families of children with Crohn’s and Colitis and became very involved with the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of North Texas.

This is not the only non-profit that Dr Fuqua tirelessly donates her time and efforts. Her personal life and professional career began to overlap because of years spent at Cook’s with her daughter and through her involvement with GKAS. The board of directors at Cook’s asked Dr Fuqua to create a local program similar to GKAS, but year round.

In 2003, “Save a Smile” was born. Cook’s is the lead organization, providing administration support of the program and Dr Fuqua, as the program manager and founder, recruits volunteer dentists and works with the program’s social workers and community health workers.

“We find children who we think most need our help,” says Dr Fuqua. “Title 1 schools in Tarrant County are preselected by the program, and volunteer dentists screen every child, pre-Kindergarten through third grade

Almost 100 volunteer dentists in Tarrant County are involved with Save a Smile. The program has provided more than $5.8 million charitable, comprehensive care to more than 5,000 children. “What’s so rewarding is that we can treat the child comprehensively. With this program, you see the child until they’re healthy. It’s just amazing.”

Dr Fuqua is a mother who is fighting for her daughter’s future, but she’s also an incredibility capable woman who is determined to end the suffering of other people’s children as well, whether it’s from Crohn’s disease or dental disease.

MEETYOURSTAFFCrystal is the AP staff accountant at TDA. From entering in checks to matchinginvoices and payments, Crystal has a spreadsheet in one hand and a calculator in the

other every day. She crunches numbers and helps the director of finance prepare monthly statements and various reports to keep the Association running smoothly and on budget.

Wheredidyougrowup?I was born and raised in the Sun City — El Paso, Texas.

Wheredidyougotoschoolandwhatdidyoudobeforeyoucamehere?I attended Texas State University in San Marcos where I received my bachelor’s degree in accounting. Currently, I am finishing up my accounting hours at Austin Community College. I am hoping to start studying for my Certified Public Accounting Exam this fall.

Before coming to work with the Texas Dental Association I worked in the accounting department for retail, tax, audit, and construction companies. I still have kept my second job that I had during college, working for the City Wide Garage Sale where I have spent too much money on Star Wars vintage items. This is probably the reason I will not leave. You can never have too much Star Wars stuff.

WhydidyoudecidetocometotheTexasDentalAssociation?I decided to join TDA because I was getting the opportunity to learn non-profit accounting and because (TDA Finance Director) Dee Dee Delagarza seems like a great CPA from which to learn.

Whatisyourfavoritethingaboutthejob?After being here for 4 months now, I can say that I really enjoy working with my department and the staff here at TDA. It is nice to be a part of a company that is a little bit more laid back.

Whatisonethingaboutyouthatmightsurprisepeople?I have a music obsession like a woman who is obsessed with buying shoes. My music collection consists of all types of music from classical to hip hop, all the way to punk and metal. Going to see live music is one of my favorite things to do. In 2009, I started collecting my concert tickets on a cork board, which has now accumulated more than 100 concert tickets. I’m hoping to add a David Bowie concert ticket to that collection one day.

A humorous bumper sticker reads, “Just when you think everything is running smoothly, there’s another election!” Organized dentistry and DENPAC can certainly relate.

The legislature recently concluded its regular session of business and it continues to work in special session…and legislators and candidates are already in campaign mode.

Every election brings new personalities, new challenges, and new opportunities. In order for TDA to successfully achieve its legislative goals, dentists must be active advocates at home. The grassroots activities of dentists at the local level provide the foundation on which all else is built. Please be an advocate this election cycle. Your efforts will make a difference to your profession.

Yes, a dentist may advertise and provide free or discounted dental service(s) to new patients.

The advertisement must include appropriate disclosures as required by TSBDE rules and new patients must first receive a proper examination, diagnosis, and treatment plan per the TSBDE’s definition of a “patient of record.”
