Greetings from Pastor Dave
What’s Happening at Your Church?Lots.
It is gratifying to observe that your church does not stand still in an interim time and in the good ‘ol summer time. Worship attendance has held very strong through the summer weeks. Two Adult Education Classes have enjoyed stimulating discussions and good attendance. Our Westminster Fellowship high school students and leaders worked with Guatemalan families to build two earthquake resistant houses. Vacation Bible School was a great success with our new Coordinator of Children’s Ministries, Lynn Nuzzo. Dr. Gary Burge, much loved professor at Wheaton College, preached a stirring sermon on “People Who Change the World,” giving vision to young and old alike of what our lives could mean when Christ gets ahold of us. Kingdom Assignment stories have been told in worship by our members who became “world changers” by taking the challenge of investing $100 in a fund-raising project to help those in need. As the seed planted by the farmer in Jesus’ parable brought forth the miracle of a great harvest, so the 100-dollar-bills given out in worship to 100 FPCW members ($10,000 given by an anonymous donor) has become nearly $50,000 that is currently helping refugee families, female veterans at the new Veterans Home in Wheaton, and others you will be hearing about in future weeks.
In August, Pastor Kyle and I will be preaching on the “Beattidues” from Jesus’ introduction to the Sermon on the Mount. These are attitudes of the heart that can transform our lives so we can be “People who change the world.” May it be so of you as, together, we give our very best to demonstrate to those around us that Christ is indeed alive and multiplying our efforts to change the world.--Dave Handley, Interim Pastor

Stephen Ministry CornerWhen our Stephen Ministry Team read the dossier of Pastor Dave, we were excited that he has attended Stephen Ministry Leadership Training knows the benefits of this congregational care program. He has already met with the Stephen Ministers and we look forward to his support.
Pastor Kyle will continue as the main staff liaison of the Stephen Program but we are so blessed to have both pastors so committed to this long standing member care program. The Stephen Ministry Team stands ready to be a non anxious presence for those in need. Contacts are Pastor Kyle, Henrieta Ribeiro, Beth Stremel, and Bob Young.
Food PantryFor the month of August we will be collecting canned fruit. Collection areas are located in the Rotunda and the Narthex.
highlights of Session Meeting 7/28/15• Clerk Matt Stremel opened the meeting with a
thought-provoking devotional on the Beattitudes and prayer.
• A letter was reviewed from Elder Charles Scouten that requested a reversal of the way our Per Capita has been paid to Presbytery in recent years, so that we can more adequately contribute our fair share. Session expressed its intention to make this an important issue in planning the 2016 budget.
• Two congregational meetings were called: August 16, following the 9:30 worship service, to elect Agnes Kenton to replace Bryan Sanzotti on the Nominating Committee, and elect Lisa Blake as Deacon to replace Margaret Hershey; and September 20 to elect the Pastor Nominating Committee (PNC), and call Rev. Kyle Roggenbuck to be Associate Pastor.
• Nominating Committee co-chairs John Keating and Jim Carr reported on progress receiving recommendations from members for those who could serve on the PNC. Recommendations will continue to be received through August 24. The proposed slate will be sent to the congregation on September 7. Any who wish to make nominations from the floor at the September 20 congregational meeting should (1) get the person’s approval, and (2) notify the co-chairs so the persons’ qualifications may be reviewed.
• *Gary Kovanda, Office & Finance, reviewed the church budget, noting that June income was low, but gave a “cautiously optimistic” view of the budget for the rest of the year.
Pastoral Coverage While Pastor Dave and Pastor Kyle are away August 3-13 Pastor Dave and his wife will be traveling to Europe to celebrate 45 years of marriage while Pastor Kyle and her husband travel to the Holy Land and Greece to celebrate their 25th anniversary. While the Pastors are away Mabel Koshy and Bob Young have agreed to be on call to respond to any pastoral emergencies. please call the Church Office at (630) 668-5147.
Message from Office and Finance
It is summertime and we especially appreciate your generosity and steadfastness in giving that keeps our finances right side up! Although June giving is almost $44,500 below budget, we continue to show overall positive momentum in pledge receipts and cash flow. It has helped that operating expenses are also below budget year to date. These are all good signs of faithfulness and hearts that are tuned to the needs of all God’s people here through mission and ministry at First Pres, in this community and throughout the world. Thank you!

Children’s News
Children’s Worship has a new look! We are now meeting on the south side of Sanctuary Hall and have designated this space for Children’s Worship. Each week the children go downstairs with Ms. Nuzzo and are joined by the Preschoolers and their childcare providers.
Together we explore a Bible story from the scripture sermon theme, share an activity to help them remember it and spend time in prayer. Feel free to stop by sometime and check out the new worship space!
Worship Bags Worship bags for the children to use during the service are located on a rack outside of the two entrances for the children to take into worship with them and return as they leave.

Women’s Ministry/PWWe are no longer collecting magazines or books for Rush University Medical Center. For many years we have done this mission project and have donated thousands of magazines and books for the patients at the hospital. Rush no longer has space for paper periodicals and are moving to a more electronic format. We appreciate all of your support through the years.
FPC Book ClubJoin your FPC book club on Thursday, August 27, at 7 p.m. in the Parish House Living Room for fellowship and a great book discussion.
Our August book of the month is The Same Sky, by Amanda Eyre Ward. It is about motherhood, resilience, and faith. Alice and her husband, Jake, own a barbecue restaurant in Austin, Texas. Hardworking and popular in their community, they have a loving marriage and thriving business, but Alice still feels that something is missing, lying just beyond reach. Carla is a strong-willed young girl who’s had to grow up fast, acting as caretaker to her six-year-old brother Junior. Years ago, her mother left the family behind in Honduras to make the arduous, illegal journey to Texas. But when Carla’s grandmother dies and violence in the city escalates, Carla takes fate into her own hands—and with Junior, she joins the thousands of children making their way across Mexico to America, facing great peril for the chance at a better life.
The Same Sky is about finding courage through struggle, hope amid heartache, and summoning the strength—no matter what dangers await—to find the place where you belong. It is a ripped-from-the-headlines story of two families on both sides of the American border.

Thank you A most grateful, heartfelt thanks for all the prayers, concerns, meals, flowers, Deacons’ visits and magic little yellow care cards that were provided by the wonderful members of our church family during the small “health set-back” in Marge’s life.
We are truly blessed to be a part of this caring congregation.
Blessings,Marge and Bob Stevens
God bless the First Presbyterian staff and congregation for the love, sympathy, and grace shown our family upon the death of Elizabeth McCarthy, Lois’s mother. The care cards and phone calls were very helpful in dealing with her death.
Lois and Ben Heaton
Dear Friends, We are happy to share that Matthew McKee has now completed his 5 year commitment with the Army. He and Kari (his wife) are now located in the Denver area where he will be completing his Business Degree. Karen and I are very grateful for your words of encouragement and prayers while he served both in the States and abroad. You were certainly our strength through those days. Matthew and Kari are also very grateful. Please join us in continued prayers and support for those families in our congregation and all those who serve. It is easy to forget about these folks and their sacrifices made each day. Hopefully they all can be home to stay soon. Peace, Mike & Karen McKee
Monday Night at the MoviesBring the family and come enjoy a movie each Monday night, through August 31, at 6:30 p.m. in Stewart Hall.
