“The Great Bend Christian” August 2017 Vol. 50 No. 8 On August 13th, we are starting a new sermon series called "Half Truths". In this series we are going to be looking at some statements that many Christians live by which are not the whole truth, and that in turn can be very dangerous. Statements like "Everything happens for a reason”, "God helps those who help themselves”, "God won't give you more than you can handle”, and "The Bible said it. I believe it. That settles it”. So please, put it on your busy calendars now because you will not want to miss any of this! Sunday August 13th 10:20 am

Dear Church Family-

Thank you so much for the care pack-

age during finals week. It is always so

nice to hear encouraging words from you

all during a stressful week! I appreciate

you all more than you know!

All my love and appreciation—

Kenzie Unruh

Dearest Ladies, Thank you so much for hosting a lovely shower for Madison. It was a joy to meet each of you. You have a beautiful church and wonderful faith community. Blessings, Jill Blackmon

Rev. Josh and the First Christian Church,

I am so very grateful for your kind donation. I

truly believe the team building and the trauma

management will be a wonderful tool for them.

There are just not enough words to thank you.

Thank you!

Regina Rose, Coordinator

Church Family-

Thank you so much for the care package sent to me for

finals week. I always appreci-ate receiving something from

the church family.

Thank you so much again! Love Always,

Maddi Unruh

Thank you for your continued support of the min-

istry of the Central District. In the second quarter of

2017, we received $300 in the Great Bend Office

from the New Day Group. We have also credited

your congregation $1,050 giving this quarter for our

office use. May God richly bless you as you seek to

know God’s will and do God’s work.

Ken Marston

An FCC Special Thanks to….. Dolores Westfall—filling in when Kathy, our secretary, is gone. Katie Sperry—volunteering as a camp counselor. Mary Hunter—volunteering to do music for 2 camps this summer. Church Staff—Kathy Rose, Pat De-mel, Mary Hunter, Rachel McCaulley, Jeri Harder, Tammy Garrison, Carli Jording, Skylar Burkes, and Terry Wiens—for going above and beyond to make this church so special!

A note of thanks for your faithfulness-

You and your congregation are an integral part of

God’s work of wholeness in the world. As Disciples

of Christ we are called to be and share the Good

News and your gifts to Disciples Mission Fund ena-

ble the whole of Disciples to reach beyond the walls

of our worship spaces.

Your gifts to Disciples Mission Fund make it possi-

ble for Global Ministries to partner across the globe

and enable camping program to thrive in many re-

gions, building up the future of God’s family. Your

gifts are foundational to the very work of Disciples

Home Missions, whether in organizing volunteers or

resourcing chaplaincy. And your gifts are very ap-

preciated by the partners of National Benevolent As-

sociation as they explore new ways of bringing

God’s love into places of darkness. The list of minis-

tries supported by DMF goes on to include more than

70 touchpoints of God’s loving care for God’s chil-

dren.

In Christ’s Service,

John J. Goebel, CPA

Vice President for Finance, OGMP

We wish to thank you for the thoughts

and prayers for Larry and I during these

last few months. It has been some of the

most difficult times for us. Without

prayer and kindness the time would have

been more difficult.

Thank you from both of us.

The One Question that Changes Everything!

I like it when someone “cuts to the chase” giving me the bottom line of what they want to say without including

all the details. I am often guilty of helping people finish their sentences so they can more quickly get to the point.

I assume some of you might be like that, too. So, allow me to boil the quite massive subject of stewardship down

to one simple, yet incredibly profound and life-changing question. The question may be simple to ask, yet it is

anything but simple to answer.

Before I give you the question, let me first highlight one irrefutable truth that we need to acknowledge. This one

truth is that God owns everything that exists, including you and me.

Just one of the many passages that confirm God’s ownership of everything is found in Job 41:11 where God is

forcefully questioning Job, “Who has given to Me that I should repay him? Whatever is under the whole heaven is

Mine.” God actually owns us believers in a second way as Paul points out in Titus 2:13-14, “Christ Jesus; who

gave Himself for us, that He might redeem us from every lawless deed and purify for Himself a people for His

own possession....” Paul is emphasizing that God is the owner and we are the owned. So, when we sit down to

prepare a balance sheet of all we own, the list should be very short. In fact, the page should be blank. We own

nothing, period. It is all His.

Accepting this foundational truth properly prepares us to ask the one question that changes everything. Unfortu-

nately, it is not a question we can ask once, answer once and then move on. It is a question we must ask routinely,

daily, sometimes even hourly. Have I adequately piqued your interest as to what this profound and life-changing

stewardship question is?

Here it is - simple to ask, but difficult to answer. “God, what do You want me to do with all that You have

entrusted to me?” We all seem to be more than willing to acknowledge that God owns everything, but we still

seem to continue making all the decisions regarding what we do with what we have. The ultimate objective of our

stewardship (management) of God’s property is to do with it what He (the Owner) wants us (the managers) to do

with it. What we want to do with our stuff is frankly irrelevant. Jay Link

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTIONS

Workshop # 1 – 4 questions church leaders should be asking (Led by Rev. Rick Morse)

Most church leaders spend enormous time asking "How do we get more people to come to our

church?" or "How do we get more money?" Rick Morse considers these to be the two worst

questions that leaders can be asking since they almost always lead to nowhere. Come and

discover 4 questions that can transform the way you do ministry and prepare your church

for ministry in this new era of mission.

Workshop # 2 – Disciples – Existentially Speaking (Led by Rev. Ken Marston)

“Who are we? Where did we come from? Why are we the way we are? What is our purpose?

Where are we going? In this revised workshop from last year, will explore these questions

beginning with “why are we the way we are?” in relation to the history and structure of the

Christian Church (Disciples of Christ).

For more Information, please see the flyer on the Bulletin Board in the Narthex.
