The next training will be on Sunday 5 at 9am after the radio sched. Prospective members are welcome to come and see what we do. The brigade has had a quiet month, with one call out to support Balliang to a wood pile on fire. Our neighbouring brigades have also been quiet with no significant activity recorded. With the days and nights being cold, wet and now windy, the brigades around the state have been busy, especially over the last four weeks, with significant house fires resulting in partial to total house loss. This is being contributed to open log fires with no, or insufficient, screens in front of open fire places and burning logs rolling out in the living area during the night, when occupants are asleep. This is a timely reminder to keep your open log fire in check during the night and to have a proper screen in front. No loss

of life or major injuries was recorded due to occupants having working smoke detectors in their homes. Smoke detectors save lives - check your smoke detectors are working. The Victorian Emergency Services Programme Grants the brigade submitted for will hopefully be awarded next month. We applied for concreting and drainage works on the north side front of the station and a new fire hydrant at the station’s front. This is to assist in refilling trucks and washing hoses after call outs. You can follow the brigade on Facebook “Anakie Fire Brigade” and/or see CFA & SES activity on the website https://emergency.vic.gov.au/respond. Fires can happen at ALL times of the year, in all environments, so be prepared, be safe have a fire plan Paul Moore 4th Lieutenant, Anakie Fire Brigade

Health News & More...

Garlic: traditional medicine has long recognised garlic's antimicrobial properties. Garlic can be eaten raw or cooked. It is also easy to grow. Uses: A recent study showed that garlic concentrate is effective against bacteria; soak a few garlic cloves in olive oil and use the oil as an oral remedy against infection, e.g. a cold, or apply it directly to wounds or skin blemishes. Caution: Garlic is generally safe to ingest, but large doses may thin the blood so check with your GP before taking regular doses of garlic especially if you take blood thinners. Up to two cloves per day is considered an acceptable dosage. Important: If you intend to take supplements of any kind and you already take prescription pharmaceuticals always check first with your GP as some herbal supplements interact with medications. e: [email protected] Ph: 0425 731 295 Be well and create your happiness..!! reminder: Meditation Group starts Wednesday 1st August @ 7pm. Pumpkin Soup 1.5 kg pumpkin 2 tablespoons olive oil 2 onions, peeled & chopped 2 carrots, peeled & chopped 4 medium tomatoes (or tinned) 1 litre chicken or vege stock strained juice of 1 lemon` ¼ teaspoon fresh nutmeg 2/3 cup red lentils rinsed & drained 1 teaspoon salt freshly ground black pepper 1 cup milk Using a spoon, remove and discard seeds from pumpkin. Cut away the skin then roughly chop up the flesh - there should be about 750g. Heat the oil in a large saucepan, add the chopped onions and carrots and cook on low heat until the onions are softened, but not browned. Add the pumpkin, tomatoes, stock, lemon juice, nutmeg, lentils, salt and pepper. Bring to the boil, reduce the heat, cover and simmer for 35 minutes or until all the vegetables and lentils are cooked. Remove the saucepan from the heat, allow the soup to cool slightly, then puree it, in batches, in a food processor or blender. Return the pureed soup to the saucepan, stir in the milk and season to taste with salt and black pepper. Reheat for 5 - 10 minutes, then pour the soup into heated mugs or bowls and serve with fresh, crusty bread. Pauline Lorenz
