For several years now, the Grand Prix Region has helped fundraise for a local organization, Children's Dental Health Clinic. We are very proud to be able to do this, and the work that this clinic does in astounding.

Check out their website at www.cdhc.org.

The silent auction at our annual Holiday Party, which is at the Long Beach Yacht Club on Saturday, December 15, this the major source of the funds raised for them. Never to early to start thinking of something you might have to donate to this great cause.

Circuit August 2018

A publication of the Grand Prix Region of the Porsche Club of America

This month's cover was taken at our New Member BBQ, hosted in Huntington Harbor by our membership chair, Patty Reilly.

You couldn't ask for a better setting OR for better weather. There was a light, pleasant breeze circulating through the house and yard the entire day

Thanks to everyone who came and helped make a great GPX afternoon.

Parade 2018 (my 2nd Parade), Lake of the Ozarks, Mis-souri, Tan-Tar-A Resort, 1800+ miles each way, two wonderful traveling companions. What a terrific week

we had.I’m sure most of you will read about this year’s Porsche

Parade in Panorama. For me, it was about the journey, as well as the event. This year’s Parade was at a beautiful lakeside resort. I had a great time at the many banquets and driving tours. Meeting other members from around the country is always very rewarding. We had a great time and look forward to next year’s Parade in Boca Raton, Florida.

However, the road trip coming and going was quite an adventure itself. On July 4th I met my traveling companions (Jimmie Mitchell and Michael Dolphin) at the Panera Bread in Rancho Cucamonga to begin our journey. We planned our road trip so that we would do approximately 450 – 500 miles per day, so that on the 4th day, we would have the shortest drive to our destination.

We had very good weather for most of our trip. A couple of thunder storms, but it is monsoon season. Most of the drive followed historic Route 66. First night, fourth of July, we stayed in Winslow, Arizona. And yes, we stood on the corner. Not only that, but we got to see a great fireworks show. Second night, Amarillo, Texas, stopping in Albuquer-que to take in some great Southern seafood at Pappadeaux Seafood Kitchen. Before we left Amarillo we backtracked a few miles to check out the Cadillac Ranch where there are 10 vintage Cadillacs buried nose first in the ground. They are covered in graffiti, which is encouraged. Our third night was spent in Springfield, Missouri, but not before we stopped in Oklahoma City for some terrific BBQ at Earl’s Rib Palace. Great food, great vibe.

From Springfield, we made the short hour and a half drive to the Tan-Tar-A Resort in Osage Beach. The location on the lake was spectacular.

After the week of Parade festivities, it was time to make our return trip home. We had decided to go the northern route instead of back tracking the way we came. Jimmie and Mi-chael headed to Kansas City to visit the American Jazz Mu-seum. I had to leave earlier in the morning to handle some personal business. First stop, Colby, Kansas. Unremarkable. Kansas is flat and full of corn fields, but the drive wasn’t bad. Next stop, Grand Junction, Colorado. The drive to Grand Junction was great. Colorado is one of the most beautiful places in the country. We stopped in Breckenridge for lunch,

then hit the road again. Our route on I-70 took us through Glenwood Canyon, which is unbelievably picturesque and beautiful. The next night was spent in Telluride, Colorado. I lived in Telluride for a few years, so it was nice to get back and visit with some old friends. Telluride is an historic min-ing town that is on the National Register of Historic places. I gave Jimmie and Michael a tour of the town, which doesn’t take very long, since it’s very small. It was nice to be back in town. It felt like being home again. Next stop, Sedona, Arizona. What a terrific drive it was down Hwy 89A. Great road, very twisty and perfect for our Porsches. However, driv-ing south through the four corners on our way to Sedona, we encountered a severe thunderstorm. We went from about 80 MPH down to about 20. It was hard to see, and the water was about six inches deep. That didn’t last long, and the rest of the drive was easy and quick. The next day was the drive home, and our journey to this year’s Parade and back came to an end.

I would like to thank my two traveling companions, Michael Dolphin and Jimmie Mitchell, for helping to make the road trip very enjoyable. Their company along the way is appreciated, and we had a great time together. Jimmie and Michael have taken many pictures of our journey, and you’ll see some of them here in an upcoming Circuit and on our Facebook site.

Please join us every month for our Breakfast Club on the first Saturday of every month at Glory Days Beachside Grill in Seal Beach.

Please visit with Ludmila in our Goodie Store for some ter-rific club merchandise.

Suesan and I also made it to Lake of the Ozarks and the Porsche Parade, but unlike Jeff, Michael and Jimmie, we flew to St. Louis on the Monday before 4th of July.

When friends heard we were going to be in St. Louis on the 4th a few mentioned that the firework display at the Arch is reputed to be the best in the country. Who knew?

And, purely by luck, we were staying at the Hyatt at the Arch and, when we checked in, we were able to get a corner room overlooking the Mississippi River and the Arch. Also un-known to us was that the arch and entire park had been closed for a four year renovation, and the grand opening was July 3.

There were ceremonies all day, including two air shows, a symphony orchestra, etc. It was hot and humid, miserable to be walking around outside, but we stayed up in our room and watching the activities all day. At 9 o'clock Suesan and I were sitting in our air conditioned room, feet up, looking out a large picture window at the Arch and the Mississippi. Looking across the river into Illinois we could see 40 or 50 separate firework's displays, some had to be hundreds of miles away (and we were only on the 8th floor). At 9:30 the fireworks started right in front of us. Now, I've seen a few displays in some pretty great places, but I can't say that I have ever seen better than this one.

With us having to be at Lake of the Ozarks on Thursday, July 5, I'm glad we decided to get to St. Louis the Monday before, and that we had the hotel reservation months in ad-vance. Evidently it is a well known fact that the Hyatt at the Arch is the place to have a room on July 4th. Not only was it a great place to stay, particularly on 4th of July, but the room rate was half of what I would expect a comparable quality hotel to be in a major US city.

So, if you are a person who like firework displays, you could do a lot worse than making reservations to be at the Hyatt at the Arch on the 4th. Just make your reservations months in advance.

Next year Parade will be in Boca Raton in Florida. I know, who wants to go to Florida in July? Well my wife, Suesan, who is as sensitive to heat and humidity as anyone I know, says she has been to this same resort that Parade will be at next year. She says it is a fabulous place to be and she is sure that she will not suffer with the heat and humidity (OK, at least, not suffer too much).

We have always flown to Parades east of the Rockies. It

is certainly fun to be at Parade with a Porsche, and anyone considering driving to Boca, remember that Jeff Peck will be leading a caravan of anyone who wants to join in either way or round trip. You can count on finding some interesting places while enroute.

On Saturday, August 4th, 2018, Grand Prix PCA members came

together for our annual Summer BBQ. This year the venue was provided

courtesy of Patty Reilly in Huntington Beach. The food was delicious and

plentiful, the ocean view was spectact-ular, and the friendliness of the guests

proved once again, “It’s not just the cars, it’s the people”. Thank you Patty

for opening your home to us!

And the unmistakable engine note so often played in your head will now be courtesy of your right foot. Ahhhh, the sweet sound of fulfillment. Porsche. There is no substitute.

In high school Dave raced motocross (Hodaka 100cc), his first venture with a car was at a GymKhana at Lion Country Safari in his 1967 Karmann Ghia. From there he attended the ‘Ecole de Pilotage at Circuit Paul Ricard LeCasellet France for a week in Formula Renault. Upon his return he drove 100 Sprint Karts, 125cc shifter Karts, Formula Rus-sell, Sports Renault, and Sports 2000. In the late 1980’s he competed in POC/PCA with his 1970 914-6. Selling that car to buy a piece of real estate and a 1974 914 2.0, he went on to win the C class championship in the POC and class wins with PCA. Dave won his class in the first Tribute to Lemans race with his co-driver (and another GPX member) Lyn Zamboni with his 914 2.0. The next year he won again driv-ing a Porsche 944. Dave also raced in the Amoco Ice Racing Series in Minnesota with a VW GTI.

Dave has been a driving instructor with the Porsche Club of America, the Porsche Owners Club, and TrackQuest Driv-ing group. The experience acquired through the years allows Dave to respond to racing conditions rather to react.

The same can be said in his experi-ence in the busi-ness world, run-ning his branch of Finance of America Mortgage in Tor-rance. Dave passed his CA R/E sales license in 1977, passed his State of CA General Contractors license in 1988, his CA R/E Brokers in 2010 and NMLS Mortgage license in 2010. He has experience with Conventional, FHA, VA, Reverse HECM, and High Balance JUMBO loans, handling each file personally as the Branch Manager of Finance of America in Torrance. Dave has developed over 40 single family homes in the Southern California and has never had a client wanting the “medium” rate; everyone wants (and deserves) the lowest rate and, of course, his business model reflects that.

FAMOUS AMERICANRACECAR DRIVERSTORY & PHOTOS BY PEDRO P. BONILLA

Every now and then, instead of technical stuff, I also like writing about personal stories relating to Porsches. This one in particular has just a hint of Porsche

content but it mostly relates to my other passions, Formula1, and little karts that go fast and burn gasoline laced with nitro-methane and castor oil, so here it is:

Back in the last century, in the 1990s (in another life, when I was part of the corporate world) I had to travel constantly. One of those trips took me to Sao Paulo, Brazil.

I had been to São Paulo multiple times before, but I’d never had any free time to see the sights, since my hectic schedule usually was: overnight flight from the US, go to hotel, shower and change, go to long meeting, then to dinner

with business host, back to hotel for a few hours of sleep, early morning visit to the plant, wrap up negotiations, back to airport, evening flight and return home. Repeat next week in another country.

On this particular trip we were able to reach our business agreements very quickly and suddenly found ourselves with some free time. My business host asked if there was anything that I’d like to see or do while in São Paulo. I told him that there were actually two things that I’d love to do.

One was to pay my respects to the greatest racecar driver ever, Ayrton Senna, who had died just the year before. And the other one was to visit the Formula 1 track of Interlagos (Autódromo José Carlos Pace).

My host, who was an F1 maniac like 99.9% of Brazilians, was all smiles. He told me that it would be a pleasure for him to take me to both places and, as an added bonus, we would take his beautiful Guards Red 944S (this is the extent of the Porsche content).

We chitchatted a little as we made our way to the Morum-bi Cemetery in São Paulo (which took about 90 minutes as we fought through the intense traffic of the largest metropolis of the Southern Hemisphere). When we arrived you could hardly tell it was a cemetery. It looked more like a park, since you couldn’t see any vertical headstones or monuments. We slowly made our way to the big tree in the center of the concentric rows of tombs, each with a small, discreet plaque on the recently mowed grass. Ayrton Senna’s is very simple and somber.

The bronze plaque reads:Ayrton Senna da Silva21-03-1960 01-05-1994NADA PODE ME SEPARAR DO AMOR DE DEUS.Nothing can separate me from the Love of God.

We spent about a half hour there and left without saying a word. It was a moving experience, since Senna had been my all-time favorite racecar driver and I had followed his career very closely. His fatal racing accident was still fresh in my mind since it had happened less than a year before while he was leading the 1994 San Marino Grand Prix at the Auto-dromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari in Imola, Italy.

After we left the cemetery we headed south.“Lets go see Autódromo Carlos Pace. It’s only about 10

kilometers” (6 miles) my host said, breaking the silence with a cheerful voice. Indeed it was a quick drive but when we got there the main entrance was closed!

We parked to the side and I walked up to the cyclone fence

to try to see the cars that were on the track. I couldn’t see the track from there but I could hear the screaming engines of various 4 cylinder powerplants going around the track.

My host had walked to the gate. I could see him talking to someone on the other side. After a short time, he waved me over and said: “Get in the car, we’re going in”. I asked how he got permission and he said: “Oh, I just told the guard that you were a famous American racecar driver visiting Brazil and that you wanted to see the track”.

Immediately I jumped in the car, the gate opened and we drove in. We made our way to the tunnel and to the infield, then to the pits. What I had been hearing was a foursome of Formula 3 cars that were practicing and were now com-ing into the garages. We got out of the car and walked all around, looking at the cars, equipment, etc.

After about 30 minutes, when we were about to head back to the car, I heard someone call out my name but I didn’t react. Pedro is a common Brazilian name so it must be some other Pedro, I thought. “Pedro!” the voice called out again and this time I turned around. “I knew it was you!” he said.

I can’t believe my eyes. There, in front of me was one of my former rivals from my old Karting days. Twice we both made it to the CIK’s (Commission Internationale de Karting) Pan-American Championship 25 years earlier. In 1970 I had bested him, finishing 11th and he in 13th place overall. Two years later he bested me by only 1/10th of a second, grabbing 10th place and leaving me out of the final championship race.

We looked at each other not knowing what the greeting protocol should be. "Do I smack him or shake his hand?" I thought to myself. We just hugged and patted each other in the back. Kind of hard (if I remember correctly).

He then asked : “What are you doing here?” I said: “Just looking. I’m in São Paulo till tomorrow and came by to see the track. What about you?” He said: “I am coaching some young drivers at the Kartódromo Ayrton Senna, over there, next to the track”. Then he said: “You think you still have it in you?” I answered: “Do you have a helmet for me?” He hopped into his golf cart and we followed in the car,

(Continued from page 25)making our way out of the infield onto the circular access road towards the Karting School’s track. There my old friend had his guys quickly prepare two of the training Karts for us and we went at it.

We did 8-10 laps passing each other several times. This was a much friendlier battle than our previous encounters and I still remember the feeling to this day. It was just wonderful! And, to top it off, it was at Senna’s hometown track where he had raced his Kart and won many times.

We spent another 45 minutes or so there and we were shown around the compound. After getting caught-up in our lives, we hugged again, promising to keep in touch. I headed back to the car with my business host. When we were in the car, just leaving the track, my host turned to me and said: “Wow! I wasn’t lying when I told the guard that you were a famous American racecar driver. Who knew!”

About 4 years ago GPX member John Mullins moved to Japan and, last year, when their house in Tokyo was finished, he was joined by his wife, Janet. Of course, his #1 build criteria was the garage, so he brought his ‘67 over! He still has the ‘06 in their house in Hermosa, and they are maintaining their GPX membership.

John thought we might be interested in the recent Porsche 70th celebrations in Japan. "Janet and I drove up to a chilly Fuji International Speedway at the base of Mt. Fuji this morning for the first day of the event. I’m guessing, based on our time-zone, that this is the earliest of the events planned around the world. Here are a few photos.

I’m back and forth to LA a lot, so hope to catch a GPX breakfast or other event soon!

Best,John Mullins

With the possible exception of the factory museum, every 911 owner has a used 911 in their garage/car port/where-ever, so knowledge of used car issues can be useful. This story will be of interest to them because it is indeed the story of the genesis and characteristics of various model/years of 911, and includs 6 cyl Boxsters and Caymans. Discussion of failure modes and repair costs for the various year/models can be useful to current owners, as well as those considering a purchase.

It is not a buyer's guide, but rather a review of the quirks of the various models and the risks and advantages of buying used Porsches. Included are work sheets for tabulating evaluations of individual cars under con-sideration and a discussion of proper professional Pre Purchase Inspections

Virtually a guide to authenticity, USED 911 STORY includes compre-hensive listings of factory configurations, wheel-tire sizes, etc. This reviewer likes the fact that data tables (tire sizes, engine sizes and numbers, transmission char-acteristics and codes) are all integrated in the year/model chapters not relegated to an inconvenient appendix.

The first section of the book does focus on pre-purchase examinations, in a general sense, and provides detailed decoding of VIN and engine numbers, and specifications for the various engines used over the years. Subsequent sections group year by year discussions by general criteria such as Big Bumper 1974-89. Within each section the year by year discussions deal in detail with what makes each year/model unique from others and, as appropriate, the special advan-

tages and disadvantages of ownership of that particular year/model. Though the discussion of issues is primarily based on issues of each year, one should really read all years related to a specific series, such as the SCs, or the 3.2L Carreras; for instance, the 1988 chapter contains a summary of the issues affecting the '84-'88 cars.

Fascinating to read, the USED 911 STORY is full of interesting tidbits of information. Trivia on the differences between x and y year are precisely stated in terms of the components, not the car (e.g.: 1968 was the last year for the push button door handle). There are photos to illustrate the characteris-tics which are unique to a particular year/model. Torsion bar sizes, wheel sizes and shock brand are discussed in the narrative for each year/model. Many chapters start with a trivia quiz with the answers given at the end of the chapter. They can provide the reader with an aura of great expertese at cocktail hour discussions.

In addition to the chronological chapters, there are special chapters on Air Conditioning, Head Studs, Metric-English conversions, Acro-nyms, etc. There is a particularly enlightening chapters on the Pop-off Valves and Air Cooled Engine rebuilding. Due in part to the year-by-year structure of the book, there is no index.

Containing a wealth of information in a very readable form, this is a book every enthusiast of the 911/Boxster/Cay-man Porsches (through early 2005) should have. Owners of these cars will also find it amazingly informative.

USED 911 STORY is soft bound with 296, 6x9 inch pages containing 271 b&w illustrations. It should be available for $34.95 from your favorite bookseller (ask for it) or from www.quartoknows.com
