Parent loops upgraded and reconfigured for ease of use

Summer reading program was a hitMany students in grades first

through eighth grade took part in the Summer Reading Program at For-Mar Nature Preserve Tree-house.

Students checked out books before school was out in June and had four opportunities during the summer to visit the treehouse while returning and selecting other titles.

Teachers Chelsea Lawrence (from left), Aide Shawn Richard and Teacher Kelley Goulish talk with students selecting new titles.

Online school opening this fall

Kearsley Community Schools will be opening a new online school, Kearsley Virtual Academy (KVA), this fall.

This school will meet the needs of students who have not succeeded in a traditional school setting and allow them to earn their high school diploma in an online setting.

Students graduating from KVA will be required to earn the 18 credits defined by the State of Michigan Merit Curriculum.

Students will attend school in an open lab setting from 3-5 p.m. Monday through Thursday.

Once students have shown the ability to stay on track with their classes, they will be given a Chromebook and be allowed to work from home without the required lab time.

We are excited about our new school, the new learning format and the possibilities it can provide for students who desire to learn at their own pace.

In-district students interested in attending KVA need to contact Assistant Principal Matt Moore at (810) 591-5308 to set up an appointment.

KVA is open to out-of-district students through the state Schools of Choice (SOC) program. Deadline to apply to Kearsley’s SOC program is Aug. 15.

Parents dropping off students at Fiedler, Dowdall and Weston elemen-taries are going to see changes when they arrive at the schools on day one.

The crumbling surfaces have been ground down and leveled, but smooth surfaces are only part of the upgrade.

Routing traffic more efficiently should make the daily process less frustrating.

Summer is winding down and prepa-rations are being made for the start of the 2019-2020 school year. Thanks to

our Kearsley commu-nity, the support of the district sinking fund enables us to continue to be proactive with keeping our buildings up to date. Not only do sinking fund dollars help maintain our facilities, but they allow upgrades without borrowing mon-

ey and paying interest. This year’s summer projects focused

on elementary school entrances. Con-gestion in our bus and parent loops at

the buildings in the mornings and after-noons have become bigger issues with more parents choosing to drop off their children at school.

While we are limited on space to com-pletely redesign parent and bus loops, we hope that the changes we are con-structing this summer will ease some of that congestion and provide procedures that are safe for our kids.

We look forward to welcoming stu-dents back. Like last year, school will resume the week before Labor Day on Aug. 26.

Please make special note of the dates and times of open houses, orientations, packet pick-ups and registration days that are listed on this page.

In accordance with Section 763.84 of the Asbestos Haz-ard Emergency Response Act (AHERA), or the “Asbestos in Schools Rule,” Kearsley Com-munity Schools is notifying employees and building occu-pants or their legal guardians of activities conducted within the past school year involving the asbestos inspections, response actions and postresponse action activities, including periodic re-inspection and periodic surveil-lance activities that are planned or in progress at school district facilities.

During the coming school year, Kearsley Community Schools has planned the follow-ing activities related to asbes-tos-containing materials through

the school district:• Periodic surveillances will

be completed every six months. • The EPA requires that

each school district reinspect all known and assumed asbes-tos-containing materials once every three years.

• There are no asbestos abatement projects scheduled for the next 12-month period.

AHERA management plans are available for review in each school building office or at the maintenance building.

Questions regarding the as-bestos program may be directed to the superintendent of Kears-ley Community Schools at (810) 591-7611 between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday during the school year.

The Healthy and Hun-ger-Free Act continues to impact what Kearsley will be serving for lunch this year, and how much it will cost. The legisla-tion includes changes in nutrition standards, food and costs.

Under the Act, menus will be lower in calories and limit grains and dairy. There will be an increase in the amount of fruits and vegetables offered.

The USDA also re-quires an increase in the prices. See chart on this page.

your children.Again this year, Ke-

arsley is taking part in the Direct Certification Program offered by the Michigan Department of Education. This program allows households that qualify under the Depart-ment of Social Services Food Stamp Program to be automatically approved for free school meals.

District News www.kearsleyschools.org

Bus service: Student safety is our main concernKearsley safely transports near-

ly 3,000 students daily to and from school.

Parents can help ensure student safety by making sure students are at their bus stops five minutes before the bus arrives.

For safety purposes, children should not be running out of the house or scurrying from waiting vehicles in panic. Nothing good happens when people panic.

Drivers cannot wait for students to arrive at a bus stop. Waiting for a small percentage would cause many to be late and ruin schedules for multiple buildings.

We stagger the opening of our school buildings so that we use fewer school buses. This saves taxpayers dollars by efficiently using district assets.

Sometimes a child’s normal means of transportation changes due to child care needs or emer-gencies. When that happens, it is important that the office and/or the child’s teacher be notified.

Please help us assure your child is where he/she should be by following these guidelines.

1. If you are making a long-term change, contact the school office and the district transportation

department, (810) 591-7622, and obtain a variance form. THE FORM MUST BE FILED TWO WEEKS BEFORE SCHOOL STARTS.

2. If a child who normally rides the bus is being picked up by a parent or designated adult, the parent needs to send a note to the child’s teacher. IF THERE IS NO NOTIFICATION, THE CHILD WILL BE PLACED ON THE BUS.

3. Due to full buses, students are not allowed to ride home with friends.

4. In case of emergency, contact your school office for arrangements to accommodate your needs.
