WHAT’S UP AT THE LAKE

EutrophicationWe test our water weekly with a private company to ensure the best water quality; however, there are still things you can do as a resident to help keep the lake clean. Here is some information on how important it is to be careful with how much fertilizer you use on your lawn.

When you use too much fertilizer on your lawn, the ex-cess nutrients are carried away by the rain and other forms of irrigation. The nutrients mix with water and find their way into our beautiful lake. These nutrients cause the algae and plants in the water to multiply rap-idly creating an algae bloom. This excessive amount of algae prevents sunlight from reaching the bottom of the lake. The plants lacking sunlight will die at the bottom of the lake where decomposers will use up the oxygen. When a bloom occurs, there is too much or-ganic matter ready to decompose and all the remain-ing oxygen in the water is used by decomposers to decompose dead plants. This can cause all our fish to suffocate from the lack of oxygen.

With your help in preventing the overuse of fertilizer, we can work together to keep the lake healthy and beautiful for all residents to enjoy.

Hello, Arbour Lake Residents! Our opening strategy puts the safety of our staff and residents first, while gradually reopen-ing activities. Please note that this plan is subject to change depending on the COVID-19 situation. Please follow health directions. Washing hands with soap, social distancing, etc. Check out our website and social media to stay updated. Thank you for your patience during this challenging time. We wish you all health and safety.

Clothing Donation Bin Have your kids grown out of their new clothes be-fore actually wearing them? Do you have clothes in your closet taking up space that you don’t re-ally wear? Arbour Lake Residents Association has a clothing donation bin in front of the lake office, close to the fire lane. Drop off your gently used clothing to help clear up the clutter in your closet. Clothing will only be accepted in bags, dropped inside the container. Bags or items left next to the donation bin will be sent to the landfill. NO HOUSE-HOLD GOODS PLEASE!

Did you know that over 10,000 tons of textiles was dumped into the City of Calgary landfill in 2014? That pile of clothes would be as tall as the Calgary Tower.

New Year, New Season, New Protocolsby Caleb Donner, Prairie Winds 4-H Club Reporter

Just like the world around us, the 4-H community is also fa-cing changes. While things around the world and in our com-munities may not be back to the certain normal we like, it is a new season and part of the year. The start of the school year and the end of the 4-H year will bring many new challenges and opportunities for the members to experience.

This summer was also unusual. Without the usual vacation plans and overnight summer camps, many of us had to find ways to keep busy and entertain ourselves. Luckily for the members of 4-H Alberta, they were able to participate in an online virtual camp based on their age levels. There were activities such as dancing on Zoom, making homemade granola bars and a bird feeder, watermelon carving and an obstacle course. A guest speaker came one afternoon and spoke to us from Michigan about some of the animals and wildlife in Michigan and Alberta. Each evening, there were big group games that they played virtually through Zoom. One evening, there was even a virtual campfire with songs and microwaveable smores! This camp would not have been possible without the help of our many sponsors, so thanks for your support. Everyone had a great time with each other, and they can’t wait to go in person to Battle Lake for camps next year!

Studies have shown that ‘gingers’, individuals with fair skin and red hair, are tougher when they suffer

pain compared to those of other hair colours. It has also been shown that they need 19% more

anesthesia than people with dark hair.

I hope you enjoyed the summer. My staff and I are now working in the office; however, we are not yet meeting in-person with constituents. You are welcome to phone or email any time if you need assistance: 403-282-7980 or [email protected].

Since the pandemic began, Conservatives have put for-ward constructive solutions to help Canadians. Our goal is to help get workers and local businesses back on their feet as quickly as possible. We know that our economic recovery will be driven by hard work, innovation, and entrepreneurial spirit, and cannot be sustained without a working population.

To recover and prosper, we need to unleash the power of Canada’s talented workforce. We need to help Cana-dians get back to work, support small businesses, lower taxes, cut red tape, and make Canada an attractive place to do business once again. I will continue to call on the Trudeau government to put forward a transparent plan to guide Canada’s recovery. Canadians deserve no less.

While in Ottawa during July, shortly before the “Eco-nomic Snapshot,” I asked the Government some basic questions about the impact of Canada’s growing debt and deteriorating credit. Videos are available on my You-Tube channel, with links available from my website (pat-kellymp.ca): What Will Canada’s Credit Downgrade Cost? and Basic Questions about Canada’s Finances.

Canadians need their leaders to have a realistic discus-sion about the impact of unprecedented borrowing on Canada’s future. On July 19, I was interviewed on the Roy Green Show about the $19 billion federal stimulus to the provinces, various support measures, and the Au-ditor General’s lack of funds to carry out performance audits.

I look forward to getting back to Ottawa in the fall. I have a constitutional responsibility to represent you as a Member of the Opposition to this Government.
