PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE MICHAEL WEINSTEIN President

I have both looked forward to and feared the day when I would become PBJC’s President. I learned the ropes with eight years on our Executive Committee and I knew the responsibilities were great. Masking up and masking down has brought that extra layer of challenge, but I see now-and we should all see- we’ve proven we can exist in this “let’s wait and see what happens” environment while also being forward-thinking. We can now say the most challenging days are likely in our rear view mirror; and it would follow that we are poised to come back with resolve to move ahead, renew our PBJC connection, and dive back into the most enriching parts of our community. Most assuredly, we make the best moves we know how when we must and we will improvise in the way that allows us to continue to fulfill our mission of education, spiritual connection, and community.

You have my commitment to doing the best job I can to lead us into those storied greener pastures. I want to get congregant emails and calls on my cell phone during the day and at night with questions and challenges if it means we can together help make PBJC a better place. We want new ideas from congregants for fundraisers or programming or whatever it is that they are predisposed to connect with. We also want the people to execute on these ideas, to make plans, then make it all a reality.

Our leaders, as calculated as they know how, are in the process of endorsing a reversion to in person experience in our beautiful building. This is happening through still murky waters and it will be a bumpy ride, but please be patient in acknowledgement of how careful we must be. When we see each other I hope we all bring that enriching closeness we’ve gotten (hopefully?) from hanging out with our families this last year and a half. The PBJC community wants that warmth and energy. Again, your congregation is trying to do what it can do for you, please ask me or those you know in leadership what you can do for PBJC. We are poised to grow and we want you to become involved. No doubt each of you have interests and talents to contribute that would enhance our community. You have an open invitation to join or rejoin. As we revert to the everyday we’ve always known, it brings great opportunity to renew our investment and connection.

With a nod to Zoom and live stream services and programming, congregants have joked with me that it’s easier to be Jewish than ever before. To that, I say we can continue both our innovations and our traditions and can make it what you can imagine. We’ve shown we can be dedicated and adapt to the changing world out of necessity. So let’s hold that thought and not just get back into it together, but take it a step further. Let’s come back into our building with gusto and conviction!

Thank you to Rabbi Finkel and Cantor Toren, particularly for working so hard to enable our congregants to continue to worship and celebrate simchas with our PBJC family. Thank you to all of those who have supported our congregation and congregants, particularly during the pandemic. Thank you to our exceptional staff for accommodating our efforts to innovate and stay connected with a special thank you to Arlene Lopez, who leaves for retirement with 31 years of dedicated service to our community. To the 2021-22 Chevra Board, especially many of you who are new members, I offer a special thank you and a promise that your commitment will come with the satisfaction that comes from contribution; please be ready. To the Executive Committee, I thank you on behalf of all of PBJC as we are all so fortunate to have such qualified and able talent poised to work hard and execute. I offer a special thank you to previous PBJC President, Evan Zuckerman, for his service and for his counsel as I learn the office he held for three years. Most of all, thank you to all members of our community who have stuck with us as committed and thoughtful Jewish families who understand our importance. I am so very honored to be PBJC’s President. I hope to get to know each and every one of you as we together focus on the warmth that is our community. I’m looking forward to seeing you in person not only at services, but at the fundraisers, programs, and community events we’ve begun to plan and the ones we will create together.

I offer my best wishes for a happy, healthy and sweet new year from my family to yours. As Rosh Hashanah begins early this year on September 6, Shanah Tovah to all of you!

Michael

NURSERY SCHOOL LISA LERMAN and JILL BUCKLER Nursery School Co-Directors

What a fabulous experience our campers are having at PBJC Day Camp. The past four weeks we have had special themed weeks….Happy Birthday USA, Summer Fun, Sea Creatures and Paint your own T-Shirt! We have made countless art projects and learned so many songs to coordinate with our theme of the week. To say we are small in size BUT extremely large in fun, would be an understatement. In addition to our fun activities, the campers are kept busy playing on our playground, splashing around our water tables, and running around in and out of the sprinklers! Each week the children learn a sport when Sports University comes. We look forward to when Miss Lori comes and teaches us Science. The children have learned so many fun science facts and have had hands-on experience participating in wonderful science experiments. Finally, camp would not be complete without “cooking” yummy treats each week. To date, we have made homemade pizza, edible dirt cups, rainbow toast and tie-dye cupcakes!!! We are considering publishing our recipes at the end of camp!! If you can imagine, we are finalizing our calendar and lesson plans for the 2021 - 2022 school year. We will be spending the summer putting the finishing touches on what promises to be another amazing, memorable, and fun school year. PBJC Nursery continues to grow with our expanded, already vibrant and stimulating preschool program. Additionally, the Giggle Zone program accommodates the needs of parents who require longer hours. Children ages 18 months to 5 years old can enroll in the Giggle Zone. This extended care option (hours available from 7:30 a.m. - 6:00 p.m.) complements our current preschool classes. We are so pleased to have already welcomed numerous new families into our PBJC community with more on their way. Registration for the 2021-2022 school year is still open. Stay tuned for continued details regarding our dynamic Intro, 2, 3 and Pre-K programs. As always, our door is open to anyone who would like more information about any of our early childhood programs. Warm Regards, Lisa Lerman and Jill Buckler Nursery School Co-Directors Check out all of the smiling faces on our campers!

RELIGIOUS SCHOOL MARY SHEYDWASSER Educational Director

Many of you know that I was born and raised in Montreal and was very excited when the Montreal Canadiens were in the hockey playoffs. They were the surprise team, the last to qualify for the playoff spot. Despite the odds, they beat Toronto, Winnipeg and Vegas and they were finally on route to win the Stanley Cup. Unfortunately, they lost to Tampa Bay, but I realized that every single player gave everything they had in that series. They worked together as a team and their resiliency showed. Our theme for the 2021-2022 school year is “GROWING TOGETHER!” We all faced many challenges throughout this past year, but we came together at our class services and gave it our all with confidence and pride. I look forward to sharing these accomplishments with your children and continue to grow on our Jewish journey together. We, too, are a team! Our mission is to foster a love and passion for Judaism by encouraging our students to learn about the history, traditions, ethics, language, and philosophy of our religion. With this in mind, we also look forward to seeing our students coming into our building with smiles on their faces and sharing what they have learned with their parents. I have always promised that if the Canadiens win the Stanley Cup, I will sponsor a party for the school. Well, they did not this year, but to foster the theme of working and growing B’Yachad, together, we will have an ice cream party on the first day of school, Tuesday, September 14th.

We are hard at work preparing for the school year. All the pertinent information, goals and expectations, calendars, and curriculum, will be emailed to you in late August. As always, please contact me if you have any questions, suggestions, or comments. Working together, b’yachad,

we can make this school the best it can be! You can reach me at [email protected] or on my cell #201-

704-3469.

Enjoy the rest of your summer,

Mary Sheydwasser

SISTERHOOD ILENE THAILER and FRAN SIMMONS Co-Presidents

Happy summer everyone! We hope you are enjoying the warm weather and hoping life is getting back to normal

for all of you! The past 16 months have been full of many emotions for us. We were filled with worry that we

would get sick with Covid-19 or spread it to our families. We were filled with gratitude that people joined

Sisterhood and our Sisterhood Board Members all came through with completing their goals and missions. We

were nervous that no one would participate in any of our events! We were also thankful to the synagogue

executives and board members for figuring out a way for us to pray together during a pandemic! We managed

to get through it all and we feel even more connected to everyone even though a lot of it was through Zoom!

Since these past two years has not been exactly what we expected, we are continuing on as Sisterhood Co-

Presidents. We look forward to working with new board members as well as some that are continuing on in their

previous positions.

We truly want to thank everyone on our Sisterhood Board who volunteered their time to make Sisterhood a great

success during a pandemic. All of you ladies are remarkable and we admire you greatly. We were able to have

almost all of our planned programs from paid-up membership night, game nights, BINGO, fun programs from

trivia to gardening and our Mishloach Manot- Purim bags! We want to give a huge thank you to all of you ladies.

We would like to acknowledge some Board Members who have completed their two-year terms. Our

Programming Chairs Erin Wilner and Rachel Ehudin for putting together the best programs in person and on

Zoom! Ladies, you truly outdid yourselves with every event and each one was amazing and we truly enjoyed

them all. Thank you so much for taking this position on without ever being a part of Sisterhood before! Another

huge thank you goes to our Purim Bags Chairwomen Mindy Baker and Marcy Guilder. Ladies, you had never

held a Board position with Sisterhood and didn’t realize it was a two-year commitment, yet you did not back down

and managed to put together over 400 bags both years. You schlepped, organized, fundraised, and delivered

these bags two years in a row and we are so grateful to you both!! Thank you to Melinda Kraus who filled in as

a Tribute Card Co-chair. You continue to step up whenever we need help and it is greatly appreciated! We would

also like to give a HUGE thank you to Michelle Zuckerman who guided us these past two years, especially during

this pandemic, and helped us bring viable programs to the wonderful women of the Jewish community.

We look forward to seeing everyone at our Kick-off Breakfast in person on Sunday, October 3. We will be at the

Jersey Shore this summer and hope everyone gets to go to their happy place and relax after a difficult 16 months!

BETTY CRANE FRIENDSHIP CLUB FRAN HOBERMAN-SCHENKEL AND BETH FUCHS Club Coordinators We hope everyone has been having a nice summer. Friendship Club took the month of July off. But we are hoping that some of you followed Kevin Woyce’s advice and applied for the State Parks Vax Pass (any NJ resident who had received at least one COVID-19 vaccination shot by July 4 was eligible to apply online and then receive a confirmation email to be used to access NJ state parks for free). We can’t wait to hear which state parks / beaches people visited after watching Kevin’s beautiful presentation in early June. Plan to join us again on Tuesday August 10th for the presentation How Musicals Get to Broadway. Entertainment historian John Kenrick will walk us through the process, from idea to creation to fundraising to casting to the stage and eventually opening night. He will also discuss who does what along the way. And John will attempt to explain why tickets are so expensive. John has worked in the theatre at every level from amateur to Broadway, eventually serving as personal assistant to six Tony Award winning producers, including the team behind the original production of Rent. He has taught musical theatre history courses, written books and he runs the educational website musicals101.com. We hope you join us August 10th at 7:15 pm for what we believe will be Friendship Club’s final Zoom event. Our hope is to meet in person this October! If you have suggestions for future programs or want to be more involved and join the Friendship Club Committee, please reach out to us at [email protected]. Beth and Fran

nourish.NJ LOUIS SCHWARTZ Chair

For more than 20 years, PBJC has served as a member congregation of nourish.NJ (formerly the Community

Soup Kitchen & Outreach Center), taking responsibility for lunch whenever there is a fifth Sunday of a month.

The next fifth Sunday is August 29th. Currently, it is still not possible to volunteer to serve this meal. Instead,

PBJC members are asked to consider contributing to nourish.NJ in either of the following ways:

1. nourish.NJ continues to hand out bagged groceries each day. Louis Schwartz will be in the PBJC parking lot

on Sunday, August 29th collecting donations from 9:00 AM to 9:30 AM. The food in greatest need right

now is canned chicken, canned beans, canned soups, canned stews, and cereal. Please only donate non-

perishable items.

2. Help by making a monetary donation to nourish.NJ by August 29th. All donations collected for nourish.NJ

through PBJC will go directly towards food supplies for nourish.NJ. Monetary donations can be made as

follows:

Online through the PBJC website. Click on “Donate Now” and make sure to select “nourish.NJ Donation” as the “Type” of payment.

Through a check made payable to “PBJC” and mailed to PBJC at 174 Changebridge Road, Montville, NJ 07045. Please indicate “nourish.NJ donation” in the memo of the check and please put "Attn: nourish.NJ donation" on the envelope.

We look forward to continuing our relationship with nourish.NJ as the organization grows and evolves. We will

see how we can best support the organization and the people it serves during the COVID-19 pandemic and

beyond. Thank you for your continued support.

If you have any questions, you can contact Lou at [email protected] or 973-787-7243.
