the Message of The Joy of Love FROM THE HOLY FATHER, FRANCIS

232. The life of every family is marked by all kinds of crises, yet these are also part of its dramatic beauty. Couples should be helped to realize that surmounting a crisis need not weaken their relationship; instead, it can improve, settle and mature the wine of their union. A crisis can become an apprenticeship in growing closer together or learning a little more about what it means to be married. There is no need for couples to resign themselves to an inevitable downward spiral or a tolerable mediocrity. Cou-ples will gain from receiving help in facing crises, meeting challenges and acknowledging them as part of family life. Experi-enced and trained couples should be open to offering guidance, so the couples will not be unnerved by these crises or tempted to hasty decisions. Each crisis has a lesson to teach us; we need to learn how to listen for it with the ear of the heart. Faced with a crisis, we all tend first to react defensively, since we feel that we are losing control, or are somehow at fault, and this makes us uneasy. We resort to denying the problem, hiding or downplaying it, and hoping that it will go away. When problems are not dealt with, communication is the first thing to go. Little by little, the “the person I love” slowly becomes “my mate”, then just “the father or mother of my children.” Crises need to be faced together. This is hard, since persons sometimes retreat into a cra-ven silence to avoid saying what they feel. At these times, it becomes important to create opportunities for speaking heart to heart. Communication is an art learned in moments of peace in order to be practiced in moments of difficulty. Like childbirth, this can be a painful process that brings forth a new treasure. The pre-synodal consultation showed that most people in difficult or critical situations do not seek assistance, since they do not find it sympathetic, realistic or concerned for individual cases. This should spur us to try to approach marriage crises with greater sensitivity to their burden of hurt and anxiety.

DISCIPLINE It is no accident that the words “disciple” and “discipline” are nearly identical. Their relationship in Christian faith and life, however, has fallen somewhat out of favor in the past gen-eration, as certain prescribed Church rules and regulations have been reduced and relaxed. These rules were often referred to as “disciplines.” We are mistaken, however, to think that it no longer takes discipline to follow Christ. The Letter to the He-brews assures us of that today. Our discipline is more like that of an athlete pursuing a victory or a personal best, or a musician striving for a concert career or to master a new piece of music. This discipline comes from desire, not from regulations. It was the desire to do the will of God that led Jesus on the path to his cross. It is that same desire he encourages in us today: to strive to enter through the narrow gate, to find ourselves in the king-dom with a surprising assortment of people who are there not because of mere observation of rules, but out of a genuine de-sire to recline at the table of the heavenly banquet.

TODAY’S READINGS

First Reading — Brothers and sisters of every race and language will be brought to Jerusalem (Isaiah 66:18-21). Psalm — Go out to all the world and tell the Good News (Psalm 117). Second Reading — Be strong and endure your trials as the “discipline” of a loving God, for it will result in the peaceful fruit of righteousness (Hebrews 12:5-7, 11-13). Gospel — People from east and west, north and south, recline at table in the kingdom of God (Luke 13:22-30).
