WELCOME TO GRACE LUTHERAN as we gather for worship of our loving God, who spared not His own Son but put Him upon the cross in payment for our sins. May all that we give and receive this day resound to His honor and glory. If you are a guest visiting with us this morning we are glad to have you with us. If you have not already done so, please take the time to sign our guest register in the Narthex.

THE ORDER OF DIVINE SERVICE SETTING THREE – LSB PAGE 184 + In Nomine Jesu +

THE PRELUDE THE HYMN OF PRAISE “O Day of Rest and Gladness” # 906

1. O day of rest and gladness, O day of joy and light, O balm of care and sadness, Most beautiful, most bright; This day the high and lowly, Through ages joined to bless, Sing, “Holy, holy, holy,” The triune God confess.

2. This day at earth’s creation The light first had its birth; This day for our salvation Christ rose from depths of earth; This day our Lord victorious The Spirit sent from heav’n, And thus this day most glorious A threefold light was giv’n.

3. This day, God’s people meeting, His Holy Scripture hear; His living presence greeting, Through bread and wine made near. We journey on, believing, Renewed with heav’nly might, From grace more grace receiving, On this blest day of light.

4. That light our hope sustaining, We walk the pilgrim way, At length our rest attaining, Our endless Sabbath day. We sing to Thee our praises, O Father, Spirit, Son; The Church her voice upraises To Thee, blest Three in One.

THE SACRAMENT OF HOLY BAPTISM The Congregation is invited to participate in the responses and confession of Apostles’ Creed as instructed by the Pastor. THE APOSTLES’ CREED

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by

the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead.

Page 3: August 23, 2020 The Twelfth Sunday after Pentecost · forever, and My righteousness will not be abolished. P: This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. ... Grant me to say,

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

The Confession – Absolution P: Beloved in the Lord! Let us draw near with a true heart and confess our sins unto God our Father, beseeching Him in the name of our Lord, Jesus Christ to grant us forgiveness. Our help is in the name of the Lord, C: Who made heaven and earth. P: I said, I will confess my transgressions unto the Lord, C: And You forgave the iniquity of my sin. P: O almighty God, merciful Father C: I, a poor miserable sinner, confess unto You all my sins and iniquities with which I have ever offended You and justly deserved Your temporal and eternal punishment. But I am heartily sorry for them and sincerely repent of them, and I pray You of Your boundless mercy and for the sake of the holy, innocent, bitter, sufferings and death of Your beloved Son, Jesus Christ, to be gracious and merciful to me, a poor sinful being. P: Upon this Your confession, I, by virtue of my office, as a called and ordained servant of the Word, announce the grace of God unto all of you, and in the stead and by the command of my Lord, Jesus Christ, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen. The Introit (Psalm 2:6-7, Psalm 117; Antiphon: Psalm 115:18) P: But we will bless the LORD C: From this time forth and even forevermore. Praise the LORD! P: As for Me, I have set My King C: On Zion, My holy hill. P: I will tell of the decree: C: The LORD said to Me, “You are My Son; today I have begotten You.” P: Praise the LORD, all nations! C: Extol Him, all peoples! P: For great is His steadfast love toward us, C: And the faithfulness of the LORD endures forever. Praise the LORD! All: Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now and will be forever. Amen. P: But we will bless the LORD C: From this time forth and even forevermore. Praise the LORD!

The Gloria Patri – Kyrie - The Gloria in Excelsis – Salutation - Collect All: (sung) Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Lord, have mercy upon us. Christ, have mercy upon us. Lord, have mercy upon us. Glory be to God on high: and on earth peace, good will toward men. We praise Thee, we bless Thee, we worship Thee, we glorify Thee, we give thanks to Thee, for Thy great glory. O Lord God, heav’nly King, God the Father Almighty. O Lord, the only begotten Son, Jesus Christ; O Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, that takest away the sin of the world, have mercy upon us. Thou that takest away the sin of the world, receive our prayer. Thou that sittest at the right hand of God the Father, have mercy upon us. For Thou only art holy; Thou only art the Lord. Thou only, O Christ, with the Holy Ghost, art most high in the glory of God the Father. Amen. P: The Lord be with you. C: (sung) And with thy Spirit P: Let us pray….now and forever. C: (sung) Amen. The Lessons and Responses THE OLD TESTAMENT LESSON Isaiah 51:1-6 “Listen to Me, you who follow after righteousness, you who seek the LORD: Look to the rock from which you were hewn, and to the hole of the pit from which you were dug. Look to Abraham your father, and to Sarah who bore you; for I called him alone, and blessed him and increased him.” For the LORD will comfort Zion, He will comfort all her waste places; He will make her wilderness like Eden, and her desert like the garden of the LORD; Joy and gladness will be found in it, thanksgiving and the voice of melody. “Listen to Me, My people; and give ear to Me, O My nation: For law will proceed from Me, and I will make My justice rest as a light of the peoples. My righteousness is near, My salvation has gone forth, and My arms will judge the peoples; the coastlands will wait upon Me, and on My arm they will trust. Lift up your eyes to the heavens, and look on the earth beneath. For the heavens will vanish away like smoke, the earth will grow old like a garment, and those who dwell in it will die in like manner; But My salvation will be forever, and My righteousness will not be abolished. P: This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God.

Page 5: August 23, 2020 The Twelfth Sunday after Pentecost · forever, and My righteousness will not be abolished. P: This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. ... Grant me to say,

THE EPISTLE LESSON Romans 11:33-12:8 Oh, the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are His judgments and His ways past finding out! “For who has known the mind of the LORD? Or who has become His counselor? Or who has first given to Him and it shall be repaid to him?” For of Him and through Him and to Him are all things, to whom be glory forever. Amen. I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God. For I say, through the grace given to me, to everyone who is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think soberly, as God has dealt to each one a measure of faith. For as we have many members in one body, but all the members do not have the same function, so we, being many, are one body in Christ, and individually members of one another. Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us, let us use them: if prophecy, let us prophesy in proportion to our faith; or ministry, let us use it in our ministering; he who teaches, in teaching; he who exhorts, in exhortation; he who gives, with liberality; he who leads, with diligence; he who shows mercy, with cheerfulness. P: This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. Alleluia and Verse All: (sung) Alleluia. Alleluia. Alleluia. THE GOSPEL LESSON Matthew 16:13-20 P: The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew, the sixteenth chapter. C: (sung) Glory be to Thee, O Lord. When Jesus came into the region of Caesarea Philippi, He asked His disciples, saying, “Who do men say that I, the Son of Man, am?” So they said, “Some say John the Baptist, some Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.” He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” Simon Peter answered and said, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” Jesus answered and said to him, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah, for flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but My Father who is in heaven. And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it. And I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.” Then He commanded His disciples that they should tell no one that He was Jesus the Christ.

P: This is the Gospel of the Lord. C: (sung) Praise be to Thee, O Christ THE HYMN OF THE DAY “All Glory Be to God Alone” # 948

1. All glory be to God alone, Forevermore the highest one, Who did our sinful race befriend And grace and peace to us extend. Among us may His gracious will All hearts with deep thanksgiving fill.

2. We praise You, God; Your name we bless And worship You in humbleness; From day to day we glorify The everlasting God on high. Of Your great glory do we sing, And to Your throne our thanks we bring.

3. Lord God, our King on heaven’s throne, Our Father, the Almighty One. O Lord, the sole begotten One, Lord Jesus Christ, the Father’s Son, True God from all eternity, O Lamb of God, to You we flee.

4. You take the whole world’s sin away; Have mercy on us, Lord, we pray. You take the whole world’s sin away; O Lord, receive our prayer this day. From God’s right hand Your mercy send, To all the world Your grace extend.

5. You only are the Holy One And over all are Lord alone. O Jesus Christ, we glorify You and the Spirit, Lord Most High; With Him You evermore shall be One in the Father’s majesty.

THE SERMON Romans 11:33-12:8

“To God Be All Glory” - Pastor Jacobs The Offertory All: (sung) Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. Cast me not away from Thy presence, and take not Thy Holy Spirit from me. Restore unto me the joy of Thy salvation, and uphold me with Thy free spirit. Amen. The Prayer of the Church At the conclusion of each petition is the following versicle and response: P: Lord in Your mercy: C: Hear our prayer.

THE HYMN OF THE MONTH “The Will of God Is Always Best” # 758

1. The will of God is always best And shall be done forever; And they who trust in Him are blest; He will forsake them never. He helps indeed In time of need; He chastens with forbearing. They who depend On God, their friend, Shall not be left despairing.

2. God is my comfort and my trust, My hope and life abiding; And to His counsel, wise and just, I yield, in Him confiding. The very hairs, His Word declares, Upon my head He numbers. By night and day God is my stay; He never sleeps nor slumbers.

3. Lord, this I ask, O hear my plea, Deny me not this favor: When Satan sorely troubles me, Then do not let me waver. O guard me well, My fear dispel, Fulfill Your faithful saying: All who believe By grace receive An answer to their praying.

4. When life’s brief course on earth is run And I this world am leaving, Grant me to say, “Your will be done,” Your faithful Word believing. My dearest Friend, I now commend My soul into Your keeping; From sin and hell, And death as well, By you the vict’ry reaping.

THE SERVICE OF THE SACRAMENT The Sacrament of the Altar will be celebrated today. Grace Lutheran practices closed communion, for God's Word teaches and we believe that communicants receive the very body and the very blood of Jesus in, with, and under the bread and wine. God's Word also teaches and we believe that one who eats and drinks while denying the real presence and the benefits and blessings of the Sacrament, eats and drinks judgment upon himself. As the Christian Church is charged with the responsibility of "stewardship of the mysteries of God," we therefore ask that all who are not communicant members of Grace Lutheran please speak with one of our Pastors before communing. Our Pastors will assist you in becoming a communicant member through instruction in all the articles of faith, give you opportunity to publicly confirm your faith, and shepherd you as a member in good standing of this congregation. Those guests, who are members in good stead of a sister Missouri Synod congregation and have previously spoken to our Pastors, are welcome to commune. We trust that all will respect God's Word and our practice in accordance with its teachings. P: The Lord be with you. C: (sung) And with Thy spirit. P: Lift up your hearts. C: (sung) We lift them up unto the Lord. P: Let us give thanks unto the Lord, our God.

Page 8: August 23, 2020 The Twelfth Sunday after Pentecost · forever, and My righteousness will not be abolished. P: This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. ... Grant me to say,

C: (sung) It is meet and right so to do. P: It is truly meet, right and salutary….evermore praising Thee and saying: The Sanctus All: (sung) Holy, holy, holy Lord God of Sabaoth; heav’n and earth are full of Thy glory. Hosanna, hosanna, hosanna in the highest. Blessed is He, blessed is He, blessed is He that cometh in the name of the Lord. Hosanna, hosanna, hosanna in the highest. The Lord's Prayer P: Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy Name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. C: (sung) For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen. The Words of Institution – Pax Domini - Agnus Dei P: Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night when He was betrayed, took bread, and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to the disciples and said: “Take, eat; this is My + body, which is given for you. This do in remembrance of Me.” In the same way also He took the cup after supper, and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them, saying: “Drink of it, all of you; this cup is the new testament in My + blood, which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.” The peace of the Lord be with you always. C: (sung) Amen. O Christ, Thou Lamb of God, that takest away the sin of the world, have mercy upon us. O Christ, Thou Lamb of God, that takest away the sin of the world, have mercy upon us. O Christ, Thou Lamb of God, that takest away the sin of the world, grant us Thy peace. Amen. The Distribution

The communicants shall file forward as they are ushered out of their pew in a single line to receive the body and blood of Christ given and shed for our sins. Please keep an appropriate distance from the communicant in front of you. Empty glasses should be placed in the waste receptacle at the end of the communion rail and then communicants may return to their pew. The Pastor shall pronounce the dismissal when the entire distribution has concluded.

Weekly Wisdom from the Church Fathers: “Let us poor sinners, then seize Christ in faith and demonstrate that faith by responsible stewardship over all the goods and gifts entrusted to us.” C.F.W. Walther, “God Grant It”, pg 621. LCMS Stewardship Ministry: Matthew 16:27 – “For the Son of Man is going to come with his angels in the glory of his Father, and then he will repay each person according to what he has done.” St. Paul talks about rewards on the Last Day in 1 Corinthians 3, and Jesus says more about this “repaying” in Matthew 19:27-30. Bottom line: your good works can’t buy you heaven, but in Christ your good works do matter. They are pleasing to your Heavenly Father and they will be rewarded. In other words, our sacrifices for the

You Have a Place at Grace – August 23, 2020 Humble Service “Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus, who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men. And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross.” - Philippians 2:5-11 The society in which we live is an accurate reflection of the self-centeredness of the sinful flesh. Acts of humility and service do exist, and people applaud such selflessness when they witness it. Much more common however, is the daily diatribe of “me first” attitudes and actions in all walks of life. Christians, because we are sinners, fall prey to the same types of thoughts, words, and deeds as we struggle with the sinful flesh. We are much more entranced by discussions concerning our freedoms and our rights than we are with accepting the role Christ has set for us by His example. At times, life becomes defined more by the injustices we believe have been done to us as opposed to the opportunities we have to serve and be Christ-like among our neighbors. The prophet Isaiah speaks of the “Suffering Servant” in great detail. It is a prophecy of the Messiah who will come to serve, suffer, and die, in order that mankind might have freedom from the power of sin, death, and the devil. It is a picture of what is necessary in order that mankind can enjoy the gift of everlasting life. Jesus had to make clear to the disciples what His purpose was and the role He had to take in order to accomplish our salvation. The disciples’ reasoning was understandable and many a Christian has thought the same thing. Jesus is true God and deserves a position of the highest reverence and respect. He is the King---the mighty God, we are to be the servants. This is the logical and natural order. Jesus, however, made it clear that the roles must be reversed. He came to serve---not to be served and give His life as a ransom for many. First and foremost, we are to be the beneficiaries of His service and sacrifice. Even on the night of His betrayal, the disciples must learn again that Christ is the true Servant…for He washes their feet; the most menial of tasks. This is the way of the cross to which Christ was called---and so are we. If we are to be Christ-like, we must grasp the mindset of humble servanthood. We must love the cross more than gold or silver and welcome humility above all worldly glory and honor. It matters not whether our station in life is considered great or small by the world. The Gospel is our true treasure and for the sake of the Gospel we are rich beyond measure; a special people of eternal value and worth! Wherever God has called you to be in this world, whether “father, mother, son, daughter, master, mistress, servant”, consider your station as one of honor and opportunity. For in godly obedience to His Word, humble service becomes our adorning glory and true worship of our glorious Savior and King. God bless you in the growth of your faith and in service to Him and His people, for your labor in the Lord is never in vain.
