Call for 2013 American Dream

Home Builder The Home Builders Association is seeking a builder who is interested in being the American Dream Home Builder for the 2013 Parade of Homes. As you may know, the profits from the sale of the Dream Home are criti-

cal to the financial well being of the HBA. The builder of the Dream Home will benefit from the

exposure and marketing of being the Dream Home builder in advertising pertaining to the Parade.

Paragon Custom Home Group and KW Homes successfully built homes for the past three years.

We are greatly appreciative of their efforts.

The builder may make recommendations on a particular development to be considered

as the central site for the Parade of Homes. You may also make a recommendation for a particular

lot within that development without being a central site located in Escambia or Santa Rosa Coun-

ties. The final decision on the selection of the Central Site and particular lot on which to build

the Dream Home will be approved by representatives of the HBA.

The builder will be reimbursed for all documented construction cost to

build the Dream Home including materials, labor, equipment rentals, permit

fees, builders risk insurance, surveys and elevation certificates, utilities

(electricity & water), sanitation services, etc. needed to complete the Dream

Home.

All overhead and administrative costs are to be donated by the

Builder. The HBA will obtain a construction mortgage loan in the name of

the HBA to pay for the construction.

If you are interested, please let Executive Director David Peaden

know in writing by Friday, August 31, 2012. If you have any questions,

please feel free to call me at 476-0318 or e-mail: [email protected].

Natasha Reynolds, of Pensacola Energy (formerly ESP), obtained her Leadership in Energy and Environmental De-sign (LEED) Accredited Profes-sional (AP) Building Design and Construction (BD+C) credential early in July, 2012. The LEED AP BD+C credential offers a measure for professionals working in the design and construction of efficient, health-ful, long-lasting, economic, sustainable and environmentally sound buildings. The Green Building Certification Institute (GBCI) devel-oped this credential for individuals whom have shown practical knowledge of LEED rating systems for New Construction, Schools and for Core & Shell. The LEED AP credential indicates that the professional has the knowledge and ca-pability to help streamline the LEED certifica-tion process by offering council on sustainable solutions from the early stages of the project. A LEED AP can help provide verification of the buildings continued efficiency and durability. Utilizing LEED as a framework for a construction project will help implement an all-inclusive plan taking into account how all buildings systems work together. How did Natasha Reynolds obtain her LEED AP BD+C credential? There are eligibility requirements that must be met before applying to become a LEED AP BD+C: • “To have documented professional experi-

ence on a LEED project, within the last 3 years, with verification through LEED Online or employer attestation.

• Candidates are also required to agree to the Disciplinary and Exam Appeals Policy and Credential Maintenance Program and submit to an application audit.

• To attain the LEED Green Associate credential which also includes eligibility requirements:

To have experience in the form of EITHER documented involvement on a LEED-registered project OR

Employment (or previous employ ment) in a sustainable field of work OR

Engagement in (or completion of) an education program that addresses green building principles.)”

The first part of the LEED AP BD+C exam is the LEED Green Associate exam. The candidate may take both tests together at once or the candidate may first earn the LEED Green Associate credential and then earn the LEED AP BD+C credential. Reynolds met the eligibility require-ment need to take the LEED Green Associ-ate. Therefore, she applied and successfully obtained her Green Associate credential in mid-January of 2011. This des-ignation indicates fundamental knowledge of green design, construction and operations. Within weeks after obtaining her LEED Green Associate credential, Reynolds began working on attaining her professional experience on a LEED Project. The City of Pensacola’s Downtown Library project would attempt LEED Certification and Reynolds was given the opportunity to be involved. In April of 2011 she began attending project meet-ings. The architects of record, TOWNES+architects, con-tracted by the City of Pensacola for this project, designated Reynolds as Energy Manager. Reynolds also provided docu-mentation and assistance for a LEED credit under educational programs. In February of 2012, Reynolds submitted her exam application. Her application was approved shortly thereaf-ter. After much preparation, Natasha Reynolds successfully passed the LEED AP BD+C exam on the first attempt.

Remodeling Continues to Grow Nationwide

By Kevin TrusslerHBA of West Florida Remodelor’s Council Chair

Americans are in love with remodeling. Television networks such as HGTV and DIY run 24 hours a day with shows like “BATHtastic” and “Design Star.” Magazines, websites and blogs feature happy home owners gushing over perfect room makeovers. And with the continu-ing challenging economy, more home owners have decided to stay in their current home longer, which has created higher demand for remodeling. A survey released by the National Associa-tion of Home Builders (NAHB) in 2012 shows that common remodeling projects have increased, compared to a similar survey from 2010. And nearly 50 percent of remodelers report seeing an increase in the number of home owners who undertake remodels to avoid moving, compared to the 2010 findings. Bathroom and kitchen remodel-ing remain the two most common types of jobs, as they have been consistently since 2001. After 2009, however, bathroom and kitchen remodeling switched places—bath-rooms became the most frequent type of job for professional remodelers. Seventy-eight percent of the survey respondents cited bathroom remodeling as one of the most common jobs, an all-time high. Home owners are frequently asking for a high-end spa feel to their new bathrooms, with features and materials such as television screens built into mirrors, exotic wood finishes, recycled glass tiles and sophisticated lighting systems. Other

popular features include those that enable a home owner to stay in their home as they age; including step-in tubs and shower stall benches and rails. Both kitchen and bathroom remodeling projects were up 17 percent from two years ago. Other popular jobs were window

and door replacements, room addi-tions, handy-man services and whole house remodel-ing, although whole house remodeling is down signifi-cantly from its peak in the

mid-2000s. The motivation behind many home owners’ decision to remodel has changed as well. The top two reasons for remodeling were the need to repair or replace old or outdated components and the desire for better and newer amenities. More than 50 percent of remodelers said that these two reasons for remodeling have become more common over the past two years. In contrast, more than 20 percent of remodelers said there was a decrease in customers remodeling to increase home values as an investment or to prepare for a sale (whether distressed or not). Remodeling to accommodate a change in the number of people living in the home also received low scores. Whether they are inspired by the amazing makeovers shown on television shows, or their changing lifestyle necessi-tates repurposing spaces to make more ef-ficient use of their home’s square footage, home owners are turning to professional remodelers to help improve their home.

In MemoriamCaryl Anne Sims

JewellFebruary 10, 1949 - July 14, 2012

Always gracious and forever elegant, our beloved steel magnolia Caryl Anne Sims Jewell surrendered her battle with cancer on July 14, 2012. We miss you so much but your legacy of kindness, devout faith and compassion fills our hearts with peace. Our spirits are joyful knowing your soul's heavenly roots now bloom eternally. Caryl was born on February 10, 1949 in Pensacola, Florida to Ruby Ruth Sims and Clifford Marton Sims, Lieutenant Commander, United States Navy. It was here in her home-town she met a dashing young man who knew instantly the petite and beautiful woman was without a doubt the one. Two months later, Ca-ryl and David Jewell were married. Sometimes you do just know! A few years later, the couple welcomed the birth of their first and only child, Mary Alice. To meet Caryl, was to love her. Her gentle yet strong spirit was nurtured by her un-wavering faith. Every morning she sipped her coffee and read scriptures, taking note of the ones that spoke to her. A simple daily routine

that always put God first. Sundays were spent celebrating her faith at Perdido Bay United Methodist Church. She found great joy with her church family, working at The Redemption Store and being a member of the Grace Ladies Group. She cherished her work at United Cerebral Palsy. Caryl loved hearing stories and sharing laughs with the clients she admired so much. Caryl is survived by David, her soul mate of 43 years; daughter Mary Alice, the joy of her life, and loving sisters Charlotte Plack (Dick) and Norma Crooke (Butch). She was preceded in death by her brother Marty Sims. In addition to her family, Caryl also leaves behind members of David's family who were a great part of her life; sister-in-law Joan McWaters (Wayne) and brother-in-law Phillip Jewell (Sandi). Caryl is also survived by her nieces and nephews whom she dearly loved. The family would like to thank the compassionate doctors and nurses of Palliative Care and the entire staff at the Joyce Golden-berg Hospice Inpatient Residence.

Lieutenant Governors Call on President, Congress to Address Housing Crisis

The National Association of Home Build-ers (NAHB) commends the National Lieutenant Governors Association (NLGA) for approving a resolution in July that underscores the im-portance of homeownership and calls on Wash-ington policymakers to take action to shore up the nation’s housing markets to achieve a long-lasting economic recovery. “The nation’s lieutenant governors understand that Americans deeply value homeownership and that it is essential to get the housing sector back on firm ground to achieve solid job growth, build healthy communities and move our economy for-ward,” said NAHB Chairman Barry Rutenberg, a home builder from

Gainesville, Fla. “Resolution sponsors Brian Krolicki (R-Nev.) and Timothy Murray (D-Mass.) have taken a leadership role in working to keep housing atop the national agenda.” The resolution recommends that “the President and Congress act with a sense of urgency to address the nation’s housing crisis in a meaningful and responsible manner, while avoiding any legislation or regulatory actions that will inhibit the recovery of the home building industry.” It also spotlights “the role the home building industry must play in helping citizens achieve the American Dream and fuel-ing our country’s economic recovery.” “Preventing foreclosures will continue to be a priority for the National Lieutenant Governors Association,” said Lieutenant

NAHBNews

Raising the Bar with a Professional Designation

Are you looking for a way to differentiate yourself in a competitive market, demonstrate your skills and experience and respond to consumer demand for professionalism in the home building industry? One of the most effective ways to advance your professional development, as well as your marketability, is to earn a designation from NAHB Education. As inclusive and demanding as any graduate program, professional designations offer the opportunity to advance your career by offering new or improved services, demonstrate a drive to improve your skills, and be recog-nized for your commitment to professional growth. And since NAHB has the most targeted curriculum, accomplished instructors and widely respected education opportunities in the business, you know that you’re learning from the best. With more than fifteen designations to choose from, you can be sure that you will distinguish yourself from the competition. To consumers, designations help identify professionals who have made a commitment

to excellence. Their credentials demonstrate that business owners and senior management have undertaken continuing education courses in professional management. By earning a designation, housing professionals can get new ideas, advance their knowledge and learn about the freshest innovations the industry has to of-fer. Earning a designation allows you to hone business skills and convey superior training, practical experience and in-depth knowledge to potential clients. Additionally, designation holders can take advantage of valuable networking opportunities throughout their enrollment, working closely with expert instructors and other professionals both within their field and outside their specific areas of expertise. Designations require building indus-try professionals to study and learn as much as possible about the industry. A designation says to clients that a professional has mastered the basics, is continually improving and staying up to date and will give the consumer the best possible final product. For more information on earning a professional designation, visit www.nahb.org/designations.

potential clients.”

Lieutenant Governors Call on President, Congress to Address Housing Crisis

Governor Murray, who was named chair of the NLGA during the association’s annual meeting this week. “I was pleased to join Lieutenant Governor Krolicki to co-sponsor this resolution as we work in collaboration with all lieutenant governors in addressing the housing crisis and supporting the home building industry to spur economic development opportunities across the country.” “Nevada was hit particularly hard by the housing crisis, and we look forward to finding solutions to fix this complex issue,” added Lieutenant Governor Krolicki. “Bringing housing issues to the forefront is long overdue and we are proud of this bipartisan effort and pledge our continual support in turning the housing market around in Nevada and across the country.” This broad support for government policies that encour-age homeownership comes at a time when the American dream is under attack under several fronts in Washington. Proposals to tamper with the mortgage interest deduction, mandate 20 percent downpayments on home loans and to end federal support for affordable mortgages would prolong and aggravate the housing downturn, lead to more job losses and substantially raise the cost of buying a home -- particularly for younger households and first-time home buyers. The lieutenant governors also noted that home build-ers face a lack of credit for housing production loans and that

potential home buyers are stymied because they cannot obtain mortgages, which is further hampering the housing recovery. Prudent lending to home buyers and home builders who need credit to build viable projects in communities that want and need them would go a long way into pumping life into the tepid recovery. Recognizing the importance of the nation’s home building industry in spurring and sustaining economic growth, the lieutenant governors highlighted that constructing 100 homes creates more than 300 full-time jobs, $23.1 million in wage and business income and $8.9 million in federal, state and local tax revenue. These tax dollars are desperately needed to help local governments to provide essential services such as schools, roads, and police and firefighter protection. “There is pent up demand for homes in many parts of the country and America’s home builders stand ready to do their part,” said Rutenberg. “However a full-fledged housing and economic recovery will not take hold until Washington policy-makers recognize that housing and homeownership must remain a national priority.”

84 Metros Listed As Improving Housing Markets in July

The list of U.S. housing markets showing measurable and sustained improvement rose by four to include 84 metros in July, according to the National As-sociation of Home Builders/First American Improving Markets Index (IMI), released today. This number includes representatives from 32 states plus the District of Columbia. The index identifies metropolitan areas that have shown improvement from their respective troughs in housing permits, employ-ment and house prices for at least six consecu-tive months. This month’s IMI includes 73 metros that held their positions on the list from June, as well as 11 newly added markets. No-table new entries include such geographically diverse places as Prescott, Ariz.; Springfield, Mass.; St. Cloud, Minn.; and Houston, Texas. “The geographic diversity and grow-ing number of metros on the latest IMI help spotlight the improvements we have begun to see in terms of home prices and job market conditions across certain parts of this country, which in turn are spurring more demand for new homes,” said NAHB Chairman Barry Rutenberg, a home builder from Gainesville, Fla. “That said, our members continue to assert the need for more reasonable credit standards and more accurate appraisal methods to per-petuate this positive momentum.” “The modest increase in the July IMI is encouraging because it indicates that individual housing markets continue to regain their footing despite some recent reports of weakening in the broader economy,” added NAHB Chief Economist David Crowe. “This is evidence that the housing recovery is slowly but surely taking root, one market at a time.” “The positive takeaway from today’s report is that an increasing number of consum-ers are looking at better conditions to both buy and sell homes, which should help spur greater activity in certain markets going forward,” noted Kurt Pfotenhauer, vice chairman of First American Title Company. The IMI is designed to track hous-ing markets throughout the country that are showing signs of improving economic health. The index measures three sets of independent monthly data to get a mark on the top improv-ing Metropolitan Statistical Areas. The three indicators that are analyzed are employment growth from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, house price appreciation from Freddie Mac and single-family housing permit growth from the U.S. Census Bureau. NAHB uses the latest available data from these sources to generate a list of improving markets. A metropolitan area must see improvement in all three areas for at least six months following their respective troughs before being included on the improving markets list.

In construction, a spike is a steel object that is essen-tial to making a building strong. As in construction, the HBA of West Florida sees a Spike as someone that works to keep our association strong. Spikes work on the recruitment and retention of members in addition to keeping members active with the association. Anyone is eligible for Spike status. On Spike credit is awarded for each new member recruited and an additional credit is awarded for that new member’s renewal on or before their anniversary date. If you help to retain a member, you are eligible to receive a half point for each member.
