CCPE offers pro-fessional development cer-tificates and a diverse rangeof degrees, including a num-ber of Master’s degree pro-grams geared towards work-ing professionals.

Offering an array ofgraduate-level degrees in aselection of formats, studentscan find programs to fit theirpersonal objectives andlifestyle. From traditionalface-to-face programs, to pro-grams completely online, tohybrid programs blending

both, CCPE’s Master’s degree programsallow students to continue to work whilethey prepare to achieve goals.

“I had aspirations of becoming ahealth care leader, particularly in theacute care hospital setting,” said ArdelAvelino, graduate of the Master ofScience in Health Care Administration(MSHCA) program and current AssociateHospital Administrator at St. MaryMedical Center in Long Beach. “Giventhe competitive nature of the job market,I recognized that I needed both practicaland academic experience. This motivatedme to pursue higher education, as I knewit would help get me to where I wantedto be professionally and personally.”

Avelino said that in today’s health careindustry, administrators require extensivetraining and education in order toadvance. He attributes the MSHCA pro-

gram with pro-viding a realboost to hiscareer goals.

“Soon afterI received myMaster’s

degree, I was promoted to a managerialrole,” he said. “All the theoretical knowl-edge I acquired from the MSHCA pro-gram is applied on a daily basis in myrole; whether it be deploying concepts offinance and monitoring daily productivi-ty, ensuring safe patient care throughquality improvement frameworks, ordealing with human assets and humanresources.”

Scott Taschner, graduate of the Masterof Science in Geographic InformationScience Degree Program (MSGISci) andGIS practitioner, was looking to augmenthis existing skillset and enhance his per-sonal marketability. He discovered theyearlong MSGISci program and with itshybrid format designed to accommodateworking professionals, it was a perfect fit.As a result, his role strengthened withinthe GIS community. Recently, he decidedto leverage his knowledge and take hisGIS-based company to the next level byway of the GISP Certification from theGIS Certification Institute.

“The [MSGISci] program was excel-

lent,” Taschner said. “It did not spend alot of time on some of the GIS basics. Itprovided project management educa-tion/training, ethical insights and prac-tices, current remote sensing techniques, and some of the advanced GIS methodsand technologies. [It] helped me meetthe [certification’s] educational require-ment, volunteer requirement, and mythesis project helped me to meet the pub-lication requirement.”

The accelerated Master of PublicAdministration Distance Learning pro-gram (DLMPA) is also developed with

working professionals in mind.Completed without career interruptionand delivered in real-time, entirelyonline, students experience an innovativelearning environment without needingto put too much of their life on hold.

“I think we both felt that CSULB cre-ated this program specifically for peoplelike us,” said Stephanie Talavera, DLMPA2015 graduate. “Without the MPA pro-gram, we would never have been able topursue our dream of higher education.”

A testament to the flexible nature ofthe program, Talavera and her husbandChris decided to enroll together whileboth working full-time and caring fortheir two children, as well as one on theway. With a desire to support a family, contribute to public service in an impact-ful way, and set an example for their chil-dren, they both felt ready to take thenext step in their education.

“We are both still at our supportiveemployers, but with a greater level ofresponsibility,” Talavera added.“Christopher is now in a managementlevel position and I have been givenhigher level work that will really becareer-defining.”

CCPE strives to meet the needs of itsstudents. As a leader in continuing high-er education, the college provides indi-viduals with the path to more easilyenrich their lives and reach their highestpotential. O RGANIZATIONS coping with smallerstaffs and fewer resources needgreater personal accountability

from their employees, but it’s often diffi-cult to achieve. The Center for CreativeLeadership (CCL) is offering tips on howto foster this valuable workplace skill inits 50th practical and easy-to-read leader-ship development guidebook – part of itslong-running series of educational guide-books and tools for the workplace.

The recently published“Accountability: Taking Ownership ofYour Responsibility” is the newest inthe Center’s series of Ideas Into ActionGuidebooks, which offer practicingmanagers information on topics includ-ing coaching, active listening and man-aging conflict. CCL published its firstIdeas Into Action guidebook in 1998,and the series has been distributedglobally.

Henry Browning, a senior facultymember at CCL and the lead author, saidthe newest edition can help practicingmanagers “see how to turn the biggestobstacle to accountability — fear in theworkplace — into trust.”

“Trust is built slowly, and when it islost, it takes a long time to rebuild,”Browning said. “The best advice is tobuild it consistently over time. As wenote in the guidebook, when there isfear, people tend to hide, hold back anddo only what is expected.”

The accountability guidebook clearlyand concisely explores why employees

often don’t take ownership of their decisions, play the blame game or arecrippled by fear of punishment. It offersways for organizations to develop a cul-ture of accountability — a willingness toface the consequences that come withsuccess or failure — that begins with topmanagement and spreads to all levels ofmanagers and employees. The guide-book, based on five years of study withmajor companies around the world, alsofeatures an accountability scorecard thatcan help managers figure out the prob-lems in their organizations.

Browning and his co-authors outlinefive major strategies for creating an envi-ronment that encourages accountability:

• Offer support to employees fromsenior leadership, direct supervisors andtheir work teams. Create an environmentthat tolerates mistakes and individualdifferences.

• Give employees freedom to accom-plish a goal or task, promoting ownershipin the process or results.

Provide access to all information need-ed to make decisions.

• Offer some control over resources. • Be clear about to whom an employ-

ee is accountable and for what outcomes. Ultimately, according to the guide-

book, “A culture of accountability is onethat provides a free flow of information, works to secure viable resources, keepsfear to a minimum, rewards risk-takingand treats mistakes as learning opportu-nities and not career-ending events.”

The Center for Creative Leadership isa global provider of executive educationthat accelerates strategy and businessresults by unlocking the leadershippotential of individuals and organiza-tions. Founded in 1970 as a nonprofiteducational institution focused exclu-sively on leadership education andresearch, CCL helps clients worldwidecultivate creative leadership — thecapacity to achieve more than imaginedby thinking and acting beyond bound-aries — through an array of programs, products and other services. CCL isheadquartered in Greensboro, N.C., withcampuses in Colorado Springs, SanDiego, Brussels, Moscow, Singapore,Pune, India and Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Its work is supported by 500 facultymembers and staff.

A culture of

accountability is

one that provides

a free flow of
