MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENTIt’s exciting to share with you the great events that will take place at Seminar 2021 in Kansas City. I’m looking forward to eating great barbecue, listening to jazz, catching a Royals baseball game, and touring some of the fountains in the city. This Seminar brochure will provide details on the plethora of classes offered by nationally renowned teachers, presenting projects large & small to teach you new needlepoint techniques, take your skills to the next level, and bring you on an educational journey of needlepoint excellence.

I’m thrilled to be going back to our longer Seminar format! This means more teachers, more classes, and perhaps time to take a break from stitching to see the city. Can’t stay for the entire Seminar? Sign up for a single day of classes or more — why not spend the weekend with us?

Be sure to register early to ensure you are in the classes you want as they fill up quickly. Don’t see a class you want? Join us anyway for a full week of camaraderie and stitching. There’s nothing like a hotel with hundreds of stitchers gathered together! If you haven’t attended Seminar before, join us this year. Eight days of taking classes, meeting new friends, reconnecting with old friends, getting creative inspiration from the Exhibit, and just spending a week of total immersion in all things needlepoint.

I would like to challenge all ANG members to consider entering a stitched piece in the Seminar Exhibit. Entry details can be found in this issue and on the website. You can also request a Judge’s Critique of your piece, which will provide you with great information to advance the quality of your stitching.

Don’t miss out on this opportunity to participate in the educational and cultural opportunities to be found at Seminar 2021.

We will continue to monitor the COVID-19 situation and will provide you with updates to Seminar activities going forward.

Stitch from the heart with me in Kansas City!

LOCAL SEMINAR COMMITTEE WELCOME Everything’s up to date in Kansas CityThe Greater Kansas City Needlepoint Guild is happy to welcome you to the 2021 ANG National Seminar, Those of you who attended the 2000 National Seminar will soon see that the revitalization of the downtown has brought many welcome changes to this vibrant city in the heartland of America.

The city now has a trolley which goes from the historic Union Station down to the River Quay area, with stops along the way at the Crossroads Arts district and the Power and Light district ending up close to the Steamboat Arabia museum.

We are proud of our pioneer heritage as illustrated in the Steamboat Arabia museum, a time capsule of life on the frontier in the mid-19th century. This pioneer heritage is demonstrated by the welcoming attitude of the people, and the great food starting with our renowned BBQ and steaks and beyond that with many culinary delights in the restaurants all over the city.

The Plaza is a delightful entertainment area, with many stores, restaurants, and a river walk. The Nelson Atkins Museum of Art is within walking distance of the Plaza, with collections from every period and every continent, and is particularly known for the Asian collections.

For the young at heart, there is the new Power and Light entertainment district, which is close to the downtown Marriott, our host hotel.

The National WWI Museum and Memorial opened in 2006 to national acclaim at the site of the Liberty Memorial and is well worth a visit. From the top of the Liberty Memorial, you can see where the Kansas River meets the Missouri River, and imagine the brave souls floating up and down the river to populate this open land at considerable peril.

Our theme “Stitch from the Heart” also honors the Hearts for Hospice project which our guild sponsors. Many of you have contributed a multitude of hearts and several chapters have started their own Hearts for Hospice philanthropic project in their respective chapter.

Mark your calendar for August 6th to August 13th and join us for the Kansas City ANG Seminar 2021. We look forward to the pleasure of meeting you and our many volunteers will strive to make your stay enjoyable and memorable.

QUEST XXVIIThe Quest Challenge celebrates its 27th year by offering an opportunity for all needle artists to create and exhibit an original or adapted piece of needlepoint at the ANG Seminar Exhibit. All members of ANG are encouraged to accept the challenge and participate in Quest XXVII by demonstrating their creative abilities based on the 2021 theme: The Animal Kingdom.

Yes, this is your chance to celebrate an animal that has touched your life and given you happiness. Stitch your favorite furry friend or commemorate one you loved. Any animal works for the Kingdom, domestic pets, wild animals, reptiles, fish, insects and birds.

Did you ever go on an African Safari, or to the Zoo and be charmed by the majestic cats or playful monkeys, maybe it was a rhinoceros, or giraffe that caught your imagination? Do you like reptiles, such as snakes, with their beautiful skin, or gorgeous tree frogs in many colors, or alligators which watch you skeptically from afar, hopefully. Perhaps you love tropical fish? Perhaps your vacation snorkeling allowed you to see them swimming with you? Insects are just amazing and come in many colors, shapes and forms. Nature is a great teacher of color theory, and design. Can you imagine a box of goldwork beetles? And what about a lovely dragonfly?

Birds are wonderful subjects for your consideration. Vicky Sawyer’s bedecked birds have been wildly successful in the needlework industry. How would you dress your bird?

Let your imagination lead you into a new project to submit to the 2021 exhibit in the Original or Adaptation categories. Be sure to write a short artist statement about your entry, to tell us about what inspired your creation. You can use a photograph of your pet to create your original design, be sure to include that in your artist statement.

Quest XXVII is sponsored by the ANG Judging Certification Program.

CLASS LISTINGSClass descriptions included on pages 8–31 provide the information you need to select your classes: a photograph, the class description, proficiency level, and kit fee and contents. Please pay attention to the proficiency level definitions listed below.

You will receive a letter from your teacher prior to Seminar, acknowledging that you are in their class and listing unusual supplies you should bring, if any. You may also view the entire brochure on the ANG website, www.needlepoint.org. Look under “Events, ANG 2021 Seminar.”

Most students bring to class their usual stitching supplies, including a laying tool, a pair of sharp scissors, a pair of scissors for cutting metal and paper, pencil/pen for taking notes, and a frame weight or frame holder of some kind so that both hands can be free for stitching.

Classroom lighting is not always conducive to stitching and many students choose to bring a battery-operated light and magnification.

App It UpLinda Reinmiller10714 Saturday, August 7, 2021

As technology becomes more a part of our lives, many stitchers wonder if they have to keep a separation between the handcraft they love and the technology that makes their lives easier. Most stitchers enthusiastically make use of technology for keeping in touch with family and stitching friends, even if they are on the other side of the world. But there is so much more out there. In class we will learn about specific apps, web sites, podcasts, and e-books that can enrich our stitching lives in numerous ways.

REGISTRATION INFORMATIONWho may attend?Everyone! Some events are open to the public — see “Special Events” for details. Other events and classes are for members and invitees. Classes and meals are available to non-members at a premium. To join ANG, visit our website www.needlepoint.org and click Join at the top of the page.

How do I register?Registration is available online at www.needlepoint.org. When you register online you will be able to see what classes are available, sign-up for the desired classes and know right then if you are in the classes. If you do not have access to a computer, you may call (856) 380–6911 for assistance. Please keep copies of all registration materials for your records. List your e-mail address so that the Registrar can correspond with you in this way. Confirmations will be sent via email. Changes to registration can be made through the link supplied in your confirmation.

Please note that all requests related to registration (initial registration, class changes, and cancellations) must be made by contacting ANG Headquarters by phone or e-mail.

The Registrar will send you a confirmation e-mail when your registration is processed. If you do not receive an e-mail within 24 hours of registration, please contact the Registrar.

When should I register? Registration begins for members on February 8, 2021 at 12 pm EST. Registration will open to all non-members on February 15, 2021 at 12 pm EST. After this date, no registrations of any kind will be accepted, and no class changes will be possible. Registration may close before June 11 if classes are full or due to space and facility limitations.

NOTE: Classes may be canceled due to low enrollment. Please register early for the best selection of classes.

How does the class registration work? All registrations will be taken on first come, first served basis. When choosing classes, it is important that you select classes you want to take. Interest in more classes increases your opportunities only if you are willing to take those classes. If your first-choice class is already filled, you will have the opportunity to indicate that you would like to be waitlisted for that class. You can then select another class. If there is a cancellation for a class, the next person on that class waiting list will be contacted to see if they would like to take the waitlisted class or keep the alternate class. The waitlists will be maintained until the close of registration on June 11. No class changes will be accepted after June 11!

What if I have to change classes or cancel my Seminar registration?Per ANG Policy 7.06, any/all registration changes must be in writing. No registration changes or cancellations will be taken over the phone. Classes can be changed, based on availability, until June 11 when Registration officially closes. Refunds for package fees, if classes are changed or canceled, will be processed within one month of the conclusion of Seminar. Your registration fee is non-refundable.

What if I have to cancel after the June 11 date?If you have to cancel after the final date of June 11, please email ANG at [email protected]. If you would like your kits, please tell the Registrar at the time you cancel.

Please note that not all teachers release their kits. If the kit is available, the full package price must be paid, plus shipping costs and a handling fee of $15, along with any other fees due for the registration, as per ANG policy. Your kits will be sent to you within one month after the conclusion of Seminar.

What does the term “Encore” mean? This means that a particular class has previously been taught at another ANG Seminar or other similar event.

What about hotel reservations? Seminar 2021 will be held at the Kansas City Downtown Marriott, 200 W 12th St, Kansas City, MO 64105. The hotel is holding a certain number of rooms at our special rate of $163, plus taxes and fees. You will need to make your hotel reservations directly with the hotel. You may make your hotel reservation online using the link posted on www.needlepoint.org.

For those who wish to make their reservations by telephone, please call 1 (800) 228–9290. You must mention the American Needlepoint Guild Annual Seminar to receive the discounted rate. Once the contracted number of rooms is sold, the hotel may offer you rooms at a higher rate. Please be considerate of others and do not make more than one reservation at the hotel. Also, if you are sharing a room with someone, make sure that you list that person when you register and that only one of you has reserved a room with the hotel.

When do I make my hotel reservation?MAKE YOUR ROOM RESERVATION EARLY!! Room reservations at ANG’s special rate may be made until the block has been filled or until the hotel’s July 16, 2021 cutoff date.

34

Page 35: August 6–13, 2021 Registration Brochure...The Nelson Atkins Museum of Art is within walking distance of the Plaza, with collections from every period and every continent, and is

Please note that any change in your reservation may change the rate and/ or require payment of cancellation fees. For reservations guaranteed with a form of payment at time of booking, rooms are held until hotel check-out time the day following scheduled arrival. Cancellations must be made at least seven days prior to arrival or a one-night stay cancellation penalty is charged.

What is the Facilities Usage Fee?A Facilities Usage Fee is a one-time charge for a participant who is NOT staying at the Kansas City Downtown Marriott UNDER the ANG block of rooms for at least two nights, and who is taking more than one day of classes. By using the ANG block of rooms, you help to defray the cost of the classroom, Exhibit, Seminar Shop, and banquet and meeting room space that ANG needs and that you are using when you come to Seminar. Not using the ANG block of rooms costs ANG.

How do I get to Seminar? If you are traveling by air, you can arrive at Kansas City International Airport (KCI). Taxi, rideshare, and car rental are available from the airport. The hotel does not provide a shuttle. If you are traveling by car, self-parking is currently priced at $20 per day self-park and $26 per day valet.

What is the dress code for Seminar?Dress casually and comfortably, and to ensure comfort, dress in layers. Remember, Seminar is fragrance-free. All Jazzed Up and the Farewell Gala are not formal, but most participants wear “elegant casual,” somewhere between formal and casual.

What about the weather? During our stay, Kansas City is likely to be in the high 80s to low 90s during the daytime hours and high 60s at night. Of course, the hotel will be air-conditioned! We do recommend, if you plan to be out during the day, that you dress accordingly.

How will I receive the Seminar Information?Other than this brochure, Seminar information will be available on the website and sent out by e-mail only.

How will I know what to bring to class?About a month prior to Seminar, you will be sent a letter telling you what supplies to bring. Always plan on bringing

the supplies you usually stitch with: laying tool, scissors, extra needles, etc. Additional classroom lighting brought by students must be battery powered. ANG no longer allows the use of plug-in lights, power strips, or extension cords for lighting in the classrooms. Class space is often limited, so please refrain from bringing excessive equipment and large items such as a floor stand.

What if I have health issues? If you have any special medical concerns that relate to Seminar, please contact the ANG Registrar at (856) 380–6911, or e-mail [email protected].

What if I have questions about my ANG Seminar merchandise order? Please contact ANG at [email protected] or call (856) 380–6911.

Will the Kansas City chapter have merchandise for sale?We will be advertising chapter merchandise on the website and through social media postings as we get closer to seminar.

What if I still have questions? Please contact ANG at [email protected] or call (856) 380–6911.

SEMINAR 2021 EXHIBIT INFORMATIONTo complete an entry for the Exhibit, please go to www.needlepoint.org/page/Exhibit2021 and click on “Exhibit Entry Form” — you must be logged in as an ANG member to access this page. If you don’t have access to the web, see if a friend can help you. If you don’t have anyone who can assist, then please contact the ANG office at (856) 380-6911.

2021 Seminar Exhibit Rules1. Entry in the Exhibit is restricted to

members of ANG in good standing, youth entries, and invited entries. All entries must conform to the ANG definition of needlepoint: Counted or free stitchery worked by hand with a threaded needle on a readily counted ground.

2. ANG welcomes a group display of non-judged Chapter Projects. We also welcome judged or non-judged Group Entries. Please contact the secretary ([email protected]) for additional information.

3. Works previously entered in judged categories of an ANG Seminar Exhibit are not eligible for entry.

4. The Exhibit Entry Form and the information it contains are the responsibility of the exhibitor: Submission in the proper category is the exhibitor’s responsibility. If the judges decide that an entry has been submitted in an improper category, the entry may be moved to the correct category. The decision of the judges is final. All entries submitted for judging will be judged unless disqualified.

5. You MUST include an Artist’s Statement and drawing(s) with an entry in the Original or Adaptation category. Include the name of the entry on the Artist’s Statement; do not include your name. The statement must be typed, double-spaced, and fit on approximately one page. Artist’s Statement(s) and required drawing(s) must be submitted by July 16, 2021.

6. You may request a written critique by one of the Exhibit judges for an additional fee of $25 per critique on the Exhibit Entry Form. Multiple piece entries requesting critiques will receive a critique of one to two individual pieces of the judge’s choice.

7. Each exhibitor will receive the judges’ scores electronically within one week of the conclusion of the Exhibit.

8. ANG strongly recommends that glass or Plexiglas be removed before a piece is submitted to the Exhibit. Aside from breakage in transit, needlework under glass creates a glare. It is difficult to judge these items because light reflection casts shadows, and stitches may appear distorted. Any piece with glass or Plexiglas will automatically have five (5) points deducted from the score in the finishing element, unless the judges deem such use is an integral part of the design and/or presentation.

9. No entry shall exceed 132 inches circumference, including the frame, nor weigh more than 10 pounds.

10. Pieces to be hung must have picture wire from edge to edge, with no saw-tooth, center-hanging devices. The exhibitor may include suggestions for display; ANG will make the final decision

11. Complete an Exhibit Entry Form for each entry. Also complete the ANG Photo Release Form (www.needlepoint.org/resource/resmgr/seminar/photorelease_5.03_approved.pdf ). A Photo Release is required from the Designer and Teacher (if different than Designer). Questions may be sent to: [email protected]. Entry deadline: June 4, 2021

12. The Exhibitor is responsible for adequately insuring pieces during transit. ANG will provide insurance for the stated value of the item while it is in our custody. If you do not specify a value, ANG will insure the entry for $125.

13. Shipped entries must arrive no earlier than July 11, 2021 and no later than July 27, 2021.

Ship to: Sharon Newcomb 10808 W. 121st St Overland Park, KS 66213

Email: [email protected]

• Do not use loose Styrofoam peanuts to pack your piece.

• Each Exhibit Entry must have the Exhibit Entry Identification Form securely attached on the back side. Fold so that only the name of the project shows.

• Hand-delivered entries must be presented to the Exhibit Chair at the Seminar Exhibit Hall on Thursday, August 5, 2021, between 8 a.m. and noon.

NO EXCEPTIONS TO DELIVERY DEADLINES WILL BE MADE.

14. The exhibitor must include a prepaid return shipping label with sufficient insurance coverage and a tracking number from UPS or FedEx if they wish their piece to be returned in a timely manner. If the exhibitor fails to include a prepaid shipping label, they will be billed for shipping, and the pieces will not be returned until the shipping bill is paid. This could mean a delay of a month or more before the piece is returned. Any pieces that remain unclaimed 30 days after the close of Seminar will be donated to the ANG Auction.

15. To retrieve a piece from the Exhibit, you, or your designee, must present your Personal Pickup Slip as proof of authorization for the pickup of that piece. Pickup will be at the Seminar Exhibit Hall on Friday, August 13, 2021 from approximately 8:00–9:00 p.m.

16. One “Exhibitor” pin will be given to each exhibitor, regardless of the number of entries.

EXHIBIT CATEGORIESFor judging purposes, ANG distinguishes between the non-professional and the professional as follows:

Non-Professional: Anyone who, at the time of entry submission and previously, engages in needlework as a pastime and for pleasure rather than for financial gain. Teaching or presenting programs/lectures for guilds without compensation, or community service will not change the status of a non-professional.

Professional: Anyone who, at the time of entry submission and previously, engages in needlework as a teacher, judge, artist/designer, lecturer, author, or stitches for commissioned work and who receives earned remuneration.

THE ANG EXHIBIT JUDGED CATEGORIES:1. ORIGINAL is a unique, one-of-a-kind design interpreted

within the ANG definition of needlepoint from the mind and hands of the artist/stitcher to whom it is credited. The design should bear no recognizable influence from any other textile sources. Any stitch that can be accomplished with a threaded, handheld needle may be used in the interpretation of the design. A typed, double-spaced, one-page Artist’s Statement must accompany each Original entry, along with the original sketches and/or photographs, and include an explanation of inspirational sources. Unusual techniques and materials used in the development of the design or execution of the finished work must be explained. The Original entry must be the work of the exhibiting artist, with no outside help from any other person.

2. ADAPTATION is a design translated or adapted from a design source created in a medium other than textiles. The adaptation may be an exact visual needlepoint reproduction of the original design or may contain easily recognizable elements from that design. Any stitch that can be accomplished with a threaded, handheld needle may be used in the interpretation of the design. A typed, double-spaced Artist’s Statement must accompany each Adaptation entry, along with the original sketches or photographs, and include an explanation of inspirational sources. Unusual techniques and materials used in the development of the design or execution of the finished work must be explained. The Adaptation must be the work of the exhibiting artist, with no outside help from any other person.

3. INDEPENDENT PROJECT is a design worked without person-to-person interaction, without a teacher in a physical classroom environment; for example, Workshop by Mail, needlepoint book, graph chart, leaflet, line drawing, or kit. There should be no commercial painting on the ground fabric. If there are any changes to thread, stitch, color, and/or design, an Artist’s Statement should be included in order to help the judges make informed evaluations.

4. PAINTED DESIGN WITHOUT STITCH GUIDE is a needlepoint worked on a pre-painted or stamped canvas or on a canvas designed for the exhibitor. The choice of stitches, thread, and color are those of the exhibitor with no teacher interaction.

5. PAINTED DESIGN WITH STITCH GUIDE is a needlepoint worked on a pre-painted or stamped canvas or on a canvas designed for the exhibitor. It is accompanied by written instructions or suggestions for stitches, threads, and/or colors (i.e. stitch guide) with no teacher interaction. If there are any changes to thread, stitch, color, and/or design, an Artist’s Statement should be included in order to help the judges make informed evaluations.

6. CLASS PROJECT is a needlepoint worked with person-to-person interaction between the student and the teacher, i.e., Seminar classes, instruction in shops, chapter meeting programs, workshops, Correspondence Courses, and CyberWorkshops. This includes painted canvas embellishment classes in which the instructor provides stitch and thread suggestions. The teacher and the title of the class must be listed. If there are any changes to thread, stitch, color, and/or design, an Artist’s Statement should be included in order to help the judges make informed evaluations.

THE ANG EXHIBIT NON-JUDGED CATEGORIES7. NON-JUDGED is any entry the stitcher does not wish

to have judged or voted upon by Registrants. Entry fee is not required.

8. YOUTH is a non-judged category with no entry fee and is limited to two entries per person. The stitcher must be under 16 years old or currently enrolled in high school. The stitcher is not required to be an ANG member, but must be sponsored by an ANG member.
