Suffeiing and DeathA. ?heCurse

    Genesis 3:16-19; Romans6:23sk: "What were God's two

grnents on Eve for her sin!isand how do they affect womentoday?" God placed a doublejudgment on Eve that affected

her 'primary roles of mother andwife (Genesis 3:16). First, shewould experience pain in givingbirth. Apparently that was notGod's original plan for women, but sin changed t h s .Eve was also to have a sub-missive role to Adam in theirmarriage relationship. Created tobe an equal partner as a help-meet, the wife would have tosubmit to the leadership role ofher husband. Also, her desirewould be fo r her husband, prob-ably in her submission to hisleadership. Women's role ofsubmission does not mean thatwomen are inferior to men, butthat for the sake of order in thefamily the husband is given theleadership role.Ask: "What was the natuof God's judgment on AdamFirst, tKe ground was cursed(verse 17). That meant it wouldtake hard work to get the landto produce food. Prior to thisAdam had to work (2:15), butnow the increased effort wouldbe described as "in sorrow shaltthou eat of it" (3:17, KJV). Thissame word "sorrow" was usedfor Eve's childbearing (verse 16).The ideal conditions before werechanged. Lifelong hard laborwas the first part of his sentence.Adam was also going to diephysically (verse 19). He wasoriginally taken from the ground, and to the ground he wouldreturn when he died. Death ispart of the curse of sin.For both Adam and Eve theoriginal part of God's blessing waschildbearing, marriage, and work-ing the land; it had been changedby the curse. That is a strongexpression of how sin polluteseverything it touches. Obedience

Noteswould have brought life's great-est blessings-maniage, family, work, and life-before the Fall. But now it brought submission, pain, hard work, and death.Paul also wrote that death isa direct result of sin. "For thewages of sin is d e a t h (Romans6:23, K J V ) . he good news is that"the gift of God is eternal lifethrough Jesus Christ our Lord"(verse 23, K J V ) .All people willdie physically, whether Christianor not, except for those who iirealive when Christ returns. Forthe Christian, death is just thetransition to eternal life. We havea glorious hope and confidencethrough Jesus Christ our Lord.B. Creation Is Groaning

    Romans 8320-23Romans 8:20-23 gives a theo-logical viewpoint of God's judg-

ment on humankind and on nature."The creature was made subjectto vanity" (verse 20, m). od'sown creation is frustrated, not bychoice, but because of the way sinhas disrupted what God meant tobe good (verse 21)."The whole creation groanethand travaileth in pain" (verse 22,KJV). Sin has negatively affectedall of creation. Paul likened thisto the pain and travail of child-birth. Creation is eagerly await-ing its salvation from its pain.Believers also groan as wewait "for the redemption of ourody" that is to come (verse23, KJV).We groan as we waitor the glorious transformationChrist will work in our bod-es, when our corruptible, mortalodies shall be changed to incor-uptible, spiritual bodies (see1 Corinthians 1553).

Eoclesiastes 12:13,14T d n g Tip 3: Displaythe tTansparency "Times ofJudgment." You may alsowant to copy it and give itto students as a work sheet.- - -Ecclesiastes 12:13,14 formthe cbnclusion of the book. Thebook's message is that livinglife without God is meaningless.Having a right relationship withGod is the only way to find life'strue purpose and fulfillment. To highlight this truth,-thebook ends with a warning thatGod will judge people. There isnothing that God does not see;nothing that escapes Him. Every

action and every secret thing-thoughts and motives-willone day be judged by AlmightyGod. No one will escape God'sjudgment.B.Reality ofEternalJudgments

    Luke 16:22-25; Matthew25:31,32,34,41,46;Revelation 2O:ll-15; 21:8

In Luke 16:22-25, Jesus toldof a rich man who went to hellafter he died. Ask: "How d i d nJesus describe the rich man%&existence in hell?" The manknew where he was (verse 23).This man who had shown nomercy in life was now cryingout fo r mercy in hell (verse 24).He was so tormented in hellthat even a drop of water on histongue would have been a relief.

Not only was the man awareand able to fee l pain, he still hadhis memory (verse 25). It willbe torture for the unsaved whenthey remember the chances theyhad to receive Christ and rejectedHim. For the unending tormentof eternity, they will be remindedof that foolish decision. Fromthis account told by Jesus, w e seethe horror of eternal punishmentfor unb sev ers .Jesus also told the result of Hisjudging of the nations (Matthew25:3 1-46). In this judgment theseparation of the sheep fromthe goats (verse 32) will resultin final judgments for both thesheep and the goats. For thesheep He offers great reward."Come, ye blessed of my Father, inberit tbe kingdom prepared fo ryoo 6omtk foundation of thewarlg (wme34, KJV). We knowthat a persoa i s not saved just bydoing goodworks, even to otherChristians (Egbesians 2:8,9).The goats are the people whodo not show compassion to theLord's people. Such s e mwill never be rewarded by tbeLord. The goats will be sent"into the everlasting fire" ( v e m41, KJV) and "into everlastingpunishment" (verse 46, KJV).The everlasting fire was neverintended for people, but for thedevil and his angels (verse 41).God takes no pleasure in see-ing people go to eternal pun-ishment. He made the way forpeople to escape such a horrificjudgment by sending His SonJesus to d ie for their sins so theycan become righteous and enterinto life eternal.Eternal punishment should ter-nfy any human being. Knowingabout the agonies of hell should

compel us as Christians to live agodly life and tell others aboutChrist's great love fo r them.Unbelievers should be encour-aged to repent of sin and to askChrist to save them (Acts 20:21).No struggles we face in this lifewill compare to the sufferings ofthe everlasting fire. The final judgment the Biblespeaks of is often referred to asthe Great White Throne Judgment(Revelation 20:11-15). This judg-ment is fo r the unsaved dead ofall time. They were not part of thefirst resurrection (verses 5,6) sothey will suffer the second death(verses 6,14; 21 :8).At the Great White ThroneJudgment, books will be opened(20:12). T he most importantbook will be the Book of Lifethat contains the record of peo-ple's works. People are judgedby their works because theirworks show whether or not theytruly had faith. It takes morethan mental agreement or justsaying "I believe" to be saved.True Christians will show theirfaith by what they do (see James2:14-26). Yes, we are saved bygrace through faith, but faith willalways be seen by what we dobecause of our love for Christ. Those people whose namesare not found in the Book of Lifewill be cast into the lake of fire(verses 13-1 5). Revelation 2 1:gives a representative listing ofthese people.Teaching Tip 4: Displaythe transparency "Who Isthe Second Death For?'Briefly review the descrip-tions of those who will be1 cast into th e lake of fire.

s Christians, how can we put this lesson into p~,,,ice ,aily life? First, weA, st strive to live a godly lifestyle. We must always be on our guard and notlet sin get a hold in our lives. Fai- living for Christ in a fallen world can attractunsaved people to the truth of thegospeLWitness to the lost people a d s by what we say and do. As Paul broughtout in 2 Corinthians 5:11-14, tbe fm of God and the love of Christ are to motivateChristians to persuade the lost to turn to God. f people fail to accept Christ as Lordand Savior, there is no seconddmme, no hope, no pardon, nothing but eternal tor-ment in the lake of everlastinghe.
