After 32 years as the director of the Springville Museum of Art, Dr. Vern G. Swanson will retire this summer due to health issues. His retirement will become effective during August, 2012. Swanson will volunteer his knowledge and expertise by serving as Director Emeritus and a member of the Museum Board of Trustees. Both positions will allow Swanson to continue to contribute his vast experience, ability and passion to the museum. “I am excited to maintain my relationship with the artists, patrons, art professionals and staff who have filled my life with joy,” Swanson said. “I expect to be around for many years helping the museum fulfill its mission of service to the community.” Swanson’s vast knowledge and commitment to excellence have contributed immeasurably to the museum during the past 30-plus years, but many do not realize the countless ways he has worked behind the scenes on behalf of the museum, Springville residents and Utah art, said Jay Knight, president of the Springville Museum of Art Board of Trustees. “Vern Swanson is Springville’s secret treasure. Very few citizens are aware of what he has contributed to our community. The hours and personal sacrifices he’s made on our behalf, not to mention the countless monetary contributions he’s made to enrich our lives, have certainly gone, for the most part, unnoticed. But he wouldn’t have it any other way,” Knight said. “Vern’s commitment and passion for quality and excellence have set a standard all of us should strive for. We cannot begin to measure his impacts to the city of Springville and how much he has enhanced the entire community.” Swanson first visited what was then called the Springville Art Gallery in August of 1964 as an incoming freshman football player at Brigham Young University. Sixteen years later in August of 1980, Swanson fulfilled his ambition of becoming the Director of the Springville Museum of Art. During his tenure at the museum he, with the help of many donors, staff and volunteers, worked to eventually double the size of the museum’s building and triple the size of its staff and budget. His most enduring legacy coincides with his greatest passion: the art. During his time at the museum he quadrupled the museum’s collection and increased its quality immeasurably. Swanson believes that his most important contribution has been having the museum continue as a nourishing part of the lives and careers of living Utah artists. “They are the ones in the trenches, putting themselves emotionally and financially on the line every day,” he said. Low Neighborhood Attachment is one of Springville’s highest risk factors for substance abuse, as identified by youth in grades 6-12 on the Student Health and Risk Prevention Survey taken during the 2011 school year. Getting to know your neighbors by hosting a block party is one way to combat this risk factor. We encourage any neighborhoods interested in hosting a party to register their site by calling 801-491-7823. Grants and resources may be available for your neighborhood. For more information, please contact Suzy Young at 801-491-7823. Interested neighborhoods can register for a visit from a Public Safety officer.

Springville’s efforts will also include a Safety Fair sponsored by the Department of Public Safety. The Safety Fair will be held in the parking lot of the Springville Wal-Mart from 6:30 to 8:30 PM and will include: new police cars, fire engines, an ambulance, and a police motorcycle. There will also be booths set up for SWAT, Internet Safety, Home Safety, Bike Safety, and Substance Abuse Prevention.

5 Steps to Natural Yard CareWhy go natural? Our yards are great spaces for relaxing. But in taking care of them, we often use water inefficiently, produce a lot of waste, and overuse chemicals that are bad for the environment and our families’ health. The good news is that by making some simple changes we can:

Save money;Protect our families’ health;Save time;Make a healthy, beautiful yard; andProtect the environment.

Without working too hard!Build healthy soil with compost and mulch: it keeps the soil loose, recycles nutrients for plants, helps store water, and protects the plants from disease.Plant right for your site. Choose the right plan for the right location in your yard, sunny or shady, dry or soggy. Pick plants that resist pests and use less water, prepare your soil with compost, and use native plants and trees.Practice smart watering. Moisten the whole root zone, and then let the soil dry before watering again. Make every drop count by mulching, using soaker hoses, and watering only in the early morning or evening to reduce evaporation.Think twice before using pesticides and herbicides. Select disease-resistant plants, and pull weeds by hand before they spread. Select the least toxic products. Only use these products as the last resort. Pesticides and herbicides can seep down into the ground water and if over-sprayed, it can go into the storm drain and eventually into our streams and lakes causing damage to aquatic life.Practice natural lawn care. Mow higher (1-2 inches) and leave clippings. “Grass clippings” provide free fertilizer.

Help us keep our City clean and beautiful—recycle your yard waste at our green waste facility located at 500 West 700 North. We are open Tuesday - Saturday from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM. Screened compost is now 20% off until the end of August.
