Marines and Associates,My congratulations to the winners of the Detachmentraffle prizes. The winners have been notified and ar-rangements made to deliver the prizes. The raffle wentwell and I thank all you who helped make it a success. Also, the Wounded Marine Retreat at the BridlegateRanch was a great outing. The Marines and their lovedones enjoyed a weekend away for the hospital settingdining and relaxing. Associate Member Sandy Gra-ham, Albert Salas and his wife Angelique, also an As-sociate Member, did a great job hosting the Marinesand their families. I want to thank Sandy for settingup the whole weekend. She put a lot of time and workplanning and insuring that the retreat ready for our
guests. We owe the Bridlegate Ranch a great debt of gratitude for letting us have their facili-ties free of charge. The Spirit Cookers, a group from the Houston area, came at their ownexpense and donated and cooked excellent meals for all attending. In addition, a spiritualblues group The Blues 4 Joy, also from the Houston area, provided wonderful music Satur-day evening. These fine people not only provided their time and talent for our Marines butalso thanked us for allowing them to donate their time. Not to forget, the Texas Park andWildlife personnel from the Bandera area offered free lodging for the Spirit Cookers andtheir "gear" for the whole weekend. Thanks Sandy, and the Salas family for a job welldone.Monday, August 15,2011, there was a memorable gravesite ceremony at the San JoseCemetery honoring HN John Kilmer, Medal of Honor recipient for his actions in the KoreanWar. Our John Rodriguez did a fantastic job arranging the ceremony. Attending weremembers of Veterans organizations and Navy medical personnel from BAMC. John Kilmergave his life on August 12, 1952 tending to wounded Marines. John has made this an an-nual event. Thanks to John and his wife Nellie for the ceremony and for caring for HN Kil-mer's grave year round.I am looking forward to our next meeting on Saturday, the 27th of August. Our agendaincludes preparations for our participation in the Veterans Day parade, the Marine CorpsBirthday Ball, the Christmas parade for all WoundedWarriors at BAMC.
I hope to see you there.

(Huffington Post) - Nicknamed"Superman" because of his chis-eled 6-foot-3 frame, Marine Lt.Patrick Wayland saved his mostheroic act for last. He donated akidney to a comrade he nevermet. Wayland, a flight student atPensacola Naval Air Station, died earlier this month after hisheart stopped beating duringwater survival training. He wasalready an organ donor, butwhile on life support, his familydecided they wanted to help afellow Marine.A doctor who treated the 24-year-old Wayland searched theInternet for "Marine needingtransplant" and found a websitefor Sgt. Jacob "Jake" Chadwick, who was stationed on the otherside of the country at CampPendleton, Calif.Chadwick had Chronic KidneyDisease (CKD), a serious kidneydisease, and was undergoingdialysis, four hours each day. Heand Wayland were about thesame age, and after several tests, doctors said they were a match.
"He has given me a secondchance at life," Chadwick, 23,said.
Wayland decided he wanted tobecome a pilot and attend the
Naval Academy after the Sept.11 terrorist attacks. He was a tophigh school student, athlete andinvolved in his community ofMidland, Texas, according to hisfather. But he didn't get an acad-emy appointment on his first tryand went to Texas Tech. He wasaccepted to the academy thenext year.
He had recently taken his firstsolo flight as a Marine flightstudent. He sent a text messageto his father, David Wayland, ashe was waiting on the run-way."He did accomplish thatgoal," David Wayland said. "Hehad done his preliminary flightinstruction and his solo flight. Ijoked with him that if he didn'tmake it make back, we wouldgive his room to his sister."
When Wayland was taken tothe hospital Aug. 1, friends andfamily spent four days at hisbedside before he was declaredbrain dead. "Patty was psychi-cally very strong and seeing himin a hospital bed was very diffi-cult," said Wayland's roommate,Marine Lt. John Silvestro.
Dr. Jeffery Moore, a flightsurgeon at the Pensacola basewho initially treated Wayland, kept vigil with family and
friends. He wanted to do some-thing for the family. "I was veryhappy that I found somebodybut there was still a lot ofscreening that had to be done. The fact that he turned out to besuch a perfect match was prettyamazing," Moore said.
Chadwick is married and he isexpecting his second child inNovember. His wife, Victoria, created a website for her hus-band when he was diagnosedwith kidney disease after return-ing from a yearlong deploymentto Iraq in 2009. Chadwick hadbeen on a five-year waiting listfor a transplant when he re-ceived the kidney Aug. 7.
He didn't know the full storybehind his transplant until dayslater when Silvestro, Wayland'sroommate, called him. Theyhave kept in touch ever since.
They Waylands don't know whoreceived the other five organsthat were donated. But theyhope to eventually meetChadwick. "I know it will taketime for them," Chadwick said."I cannot begin to express whatI feel for what they have done. This is all so overwhelming."
Chadwick said the Marine Corpsis a brotherhood.
"From the time you go into bootcamp to the time you leave bootcamp, it is about being there foryour fellow Marines. This is theultimate example of that,"Silvestro said.
