AUGUST NEWSLETTER Cold Case Fund In May of this year, SPF received an application for an urgent grant request. The Homicide Unit requested funding for private laboratory DNA analysis that would potentially identify suspects in unsolved cold cases. These tests would normally be done by the Washington State Patrol Crime Lab, but due to a large backlog of requests, it would take years for testing to be completed. Seattle Police Foundation was able to fund the request and hopes to provide more support in the future. Detective Rolf Norton said, "Potentially identifying, arresting, and prosecuting homicide offenders will make Seattle a safer community, provide closure to the families of victims, and send the message to other offenders that it does not matter how long ago a crime occurred, or how much time has gone by, the department will not give up on pursuing justice." Applications for the 2019 grant cycle will be available to SPD personnel this fall. All of SPF's grants are funded through the generosity of our donors.

Out of Pocket Expense Fund

Many of SPD's officers began their careers with aspirations to help those in need. There are timesduring calls for service that officers learn about a citizen's basic needs not being met. Frequentlyofficers reach into their own pockets to purchase critical items to assist community members in crisis.Three of Seattle's Rotary Clubs recently heard about this and wanted to help. The Emerald City,University District, and Puget Sound Passport Rotary Clubs each issued $500 grants to create an Outof Pocket Expense Fund to help officers get reimbursed for such purchases.

"Rotary works hard to be part of the community and we want to help officers make Seattle a better andsafer place." Said Rotary member Howard Cohen.

Thanks to Rotary's generosity, officers can now purchase items needed for babies, warm clothing, food, or emergency transportation for those in need.

Lil' "Buzz" Sebastian Pony Party

Meet the newest member of the SPD Mounted Patrol Unit! This little pony has been dreaming ofbecoming a Mounted Patrol horse forever and he finally got his chance.

To make him an official member of the herd, he needed a name. SPF took name submissions fromsome of the best 5th grade classes in Seattle. After the votes were tabulated, Miss Nuutinen's classfrom Adam's Elementary had selected the winning name... Lil' "Buzz" Sebastian! Students said theywere Inspired by the mini horse on the NBC television show "Parks and Recreation."

To show how grateful he was, Lil' Sebastian visited Miss Nuutinen's class for a pony party! Members ofthe Mounted Patrol spoke to students about being police officers and unique roll the Mounted PatrolUnit has at SPD.

Look for Lil “Buzz” Sebastian at community events citywide this summer!
