Hi, guys! Oi, pessoal!
How is everybody? Como estão todos?
Studying hard?
Vejamos quais assuntos estudaremos hoje:
Aula 01: Conectivos (Conjunções e Marcadores do discurso).

1. Coordenativas 2. Subordinativas 3. Correlativas
Conjunções coordenativas: ligam 2 palavras ou 2 orações independentes.
São elas: and e but mas, porém, entretanto for pois, como, desde que, visto que nor nem, também não or ou, senão so para que, de maneira que yet contudo, porém, mas
Exemplos: She took a vacation and enjoyed it a lot. Ela tirou férias e aproveitou muito.
They tried but failed. Eles tentaram, mas falharam.
Not a house nor a building was left standing. I spent a lot of money so you could have a good education.

Exemplos:
Unless they study hard, they will not pass the test.
Joana is late, although she left her house very early.
Since the employee is intelligent, he will know how to proceed.

Observe: as... as como... como both... and ambos... e, tanto quanto either... or ou... ou neither... nor nem... nem not... but não... mas not only... but also não apenas... mas também whether... or quer... quer
Exemplos: Both Maria and José went to the party. Tanto Maria quanto José foram à festa. Neither Pedro nor João studied enough for the test. Whether you like it or not, I will travel tomorrow.

More than a century after women started campaigning for the right to vote, it still seems that there aren’t enough women in position of power. In the world as a whole, there have been very few female heads of state and in some countries women hold hardly any political power. In industrialized countries where large numbers of women work, it still happens that men earn two or three times as much for doing the same job. Although there are a few successful female business leaders, there are clearly many more men at the top. Many people believe that this situation reflects the fact that women haven’t got enough time to be successful in the work place, and in the home. There is too much pressure on women, they say, to be good wives and mothers, and they are at a disadvantage in the job market. However, there is quite a lot of evidence to suggest that women can be more successful in the modern business environment than men. Many modern business operations now depend on co-operation and flexibility, and women are better at those skills than men. So it may well be that in the future, quite a lot of important business will be run by women, and it will be the men who earn lower wages or stay at home.
Based on the text, judge the following items. 40 The main idea of the text can be said to be “same tasks, same pay”. 41 It took ages before women could occupy a powerful position. 42 There are countries where a woman has almost no political influence.

PROVA 1: TRADUÇÃO E COMENTÁRIOS
It’s easy to suppose that we all feel the same way about global warming. After all, everybody wants to save the world. We all want to make a contribution, however small, and we all do our best. You aren’t one of those people who wastes water. And I’ m sure you’ve got low-energy light bulbs in your house. Not everyone is so enthusiastic, of course. Some people wonder what they can do to help, and don’t really know what to do, until they find out by paying attention to what the world’s scientists are saying. At least, we all hope this is true. Still, there are quite a lot of people who just hope that the problem will go away. Why do they do this, we might ask. Don’t they want to make a difference? Their usual response is “We don’t really know whether the climate is changing”. Well, there’s plenty of evidence of climate change. We know that we are wasting energy and polluting the planet. It’s all quite simple really. And if you do know anyone who is still uncertain about whether to save the world or not, your message to them should be clear. What are you waiting for? If you think this is just somebody else’s problem, it will, very soon, be your problem as well.

According to the text, judge the following items. 35 - The term “hope” (R.8) is synonymous with expect. O termo “esperar” (linha 8) é sinônimo de esperar.
ERRADA. Observem o trecho:
Vejamos o significado dos verbos TO HOPE e TO EXPECT: TO HOPE:
• Esperar • Ter esperança em
TO EXPECT (cognato verdadeiro):
At least, we all hope this is true. Still, there are quite a lot of people who just hope that the problem will go away.

36 - People all over the world are willing to make a minor contribution to decrease global warming consequences.
Outros esperam (hope) que o problema desapareça (go away).
Still, there are quite a lot of people who just hope that the problem will go away. Why do they do this, we might ask. Don’t they want to make a difference? And if you do know anyone who is still uncertain about whether to save the world or not, your message to them should be clear. What are you waiting for?
37 - Everyone should do their best to save wastewater.
TO WASTE WATER = desperdiçar água THE WASTE OF WATER = o desperdício de água
You aren’t one of those people who wastes water.

38 - Many people are awaiting the day when our world warming will fade away.
quite a lot of people = many people
to go away = to fade away
Still, there are quite a lot of people who just hope that the problem will go away.
39 - It is all too clear that we have been defiling the Earth.
CORRETA.
Se sabemos que (know that) estamos desperdiçando (wasting) energia e poluindo (polluting) o planeta, podemos entender que está muito claro (all too clear) que estamos sujando (defiling) a Terra (Earth).
We know that we are wasting energy and polluting the planet. It’s all quite simple really. Sabemos que estamos desperdiçando energia e poluindo o planeta. É tudo muito simples realmente.

Para entender a assertiva, ressalto a importância de conhecer o sentido do verbo TO DEFILE:
• Sujar • Corromper • Poluir • Aviltar • Macular • Manchar • Violar • Desonrar • Deflorar
POLLUTING = DEFILING

Based on the text, judge the following items. Baseado no texto, julgue os itens a seguir. 40 - The main idea of the text can be said to be “same tasks, same pay”.
ERRADA. O texto nos diz justamente o contrário. Veja:
TASK
• Tarefa • Incumbência • Serviço • Dever
JOB
• Trabalho • Emprego • Tarefa
TASK = JOB
TO EARN • Ganhar • Obter em troca de trabalho
In industrialized countries where large numbers of women work, it still happens that men earn two or three times as much for doing the same job. PAY
Logo, a ideia central seria “same tasks, different pay” (mesmas tarefas, diferente remuneração)
41 - It took ages before women could occupy a powerful position.
42 - There are countries where a woman has almost no political influence.
CORRETA.
HOLD HARDLY ANY POLITICAL POWER = HAS ALMOST NO POLITICAL INFLUENCE têm quase nenhum poder político = tem quase nenhuma influência política
In the world as a whole, there have been very few female heads of state and in some countries women hold hardly any political power.

This text refers to items from 41 to 50 Este texto refere-se aos itens 41 a 50 The Capability Maturity Model (CMM) and the more recent CMM Integrated have initiated a new discipline of engineering management that plays a dominant role in software practice and research. The literature offers a number of successful cases of how software firms adopted these models and the CMMs do indeed offer many useful recommendations for how to systematically assess and improve software operations. The CMMs are, however, rooted in the ideal of a rational, control-centered culture for software development, and although other software process improvement (SPI) approaches have been suggested, they do not differ from the CMMs when it comes to underlying values. It is therefore not surprising that most software firms struggle to take advantage of the potential benefits of SPI as they adopt this technology into the complex and dynamic realities of their day-to-day operations.

For small software firms, it is particularly challenging to adopt SPI technology because the dominating approaches to SPI target large organizations; there are few resources available for improvement in small software firms; it is by no means trivial tailoring SPI knowledge to their needs; and, because it normally takes several complex and expensive initiatives to reach new maturity levels. Nessa questão o examinador misturou as informações contidas na primeira frase do texto. Entendam:
Capability Maturity Model (CMM) + CMM Integrated

But there also comes the need to weigh in on issues that, in the past, China would have been able to keep comfortably at arm’s length. The controversy over Iran’s nuclear programme is a case in point. Countries including America, Israel and Saudi Arabia are urging China to adopt their hard line on Iran, which would be to the detriment of its considerable energy and commercial interests there. China is feeling similar pressure to take a firm stand on the increasingly chaotic situation in Syria. It is another sticky foreign-policy problem of the sort that China used to be able to sidestep. But I think, as I made clear in my discussion with President Bush just now, the important thing is that peace is to be valued most.” That sort of bromide fit well enough with the principles that had long been at the core of Chinese foreign policy: a preference for steering clear of far-flung entanglements in order better to focus on growth and development at home; and a reluctance to endorse any country “interfering in the internal affairs” of another—lest anyone think about interfering in China’s.

Today China cannot even make such a pretence. For one thing, its oil imports have risen dramatically; they are projected to reach 266m tonnes this year. With such a dependency on foreign supplies, China cannot help but concern itself with the fate of the world’s oil-producing regions and the security of its own shipping routes. But oil is only one factor. As the world’s second-largest economy, China has seen its profile rise and its interests multiply. The government had to evacuate more than 35,000 from Libya when that country slipped into turmoil last year.
