American Culture and Literature
• Derived from western European culture, literature and civilization.
• The first English settlement in America was fortunate. Thirteen colonies were spread along the Atlantic coast of the continent and this caused great influence on the American language, ways of thought and civilization.

• The first literary manifestations in America tell us the story of New England and Virginia.
• Two main things forced the English toward America: material improvement and religious freedom.

• American individualism - Also known as the self-made man.
• Celebration of ambition and achievement. Original colonists came for religious freedom. Later colonists came looking to make their fortune with opportunities not available in class-based European societies.

• The American Dream - Closely linked to American individualism:The idea that anyone can become whatever he or she wants to become through hard work, determination, and perseverance.

Cultural diversity - A society that welcomes legal immigrants of diverse backgrounds.The melting pot theory - Immigrants assimilate into American culture and become Americans.

The salad bowl theory -immigrants retain their separate identities while making up part of the whole and adopt a hyphenated American name (Chinese-Americans, for example).

• Religious tolerance was one of the first principles in American life.
• More recent issues have included race, gender, sexual orientation, etc.

• O conhecimento dos costumes e valores de outras culturas estrangeiras pode estimular interesse e conhecimento ainda maiores da cultura do seu próprio país, permitindo inclusive um trabalho interdisciplinar com os conteúdos de língua portuguesa ou história, ou contrastivodentro da própria disciplina de língua inglesa.

Uma ferramenta muito poderosa e que se bem utilizada, com um conteúdo de textos autênticos, significativos e relevantes ao aluno, além do conhecimento cultural adquirido, levará o aluno à reflexão e o ajudará a melhorar as habilidades de leitura, escrita e oral da língua inglesa.
